Fort East Martello Museum - Key West, Florida
The Fort East Martello Museum is famous for housing weird artifacts in Key West. Robert the Haunted Doll and Tombstone of Elena Hoyos whose decomposed body was partially preserved by a demented man for amorous purposes are kept here. The museum is rarely visited by people during day time, but the haunted tours bring in a lot of night time visitors. It is also listed in the U.S National Register of Historic Places. The view from the East Martello Tower is worth seeing.

Robert The Haunted Doll Rules After Dark at Ft. East Martello Museum Key West
Robert the Doll is over 100 years old and resides in a glass case at Fort East Martello Museum. Since he has come to live at the Fort many strange events have been reported. Blame It on Robert has become a well known excuse for pranks in Key West. None of the museum staff wants to the last to leave the old fort. This is a rather spooky place after sundown, said curator Norman Aberle. A lot of spirits live here, and somehow, I think Robert controls it all.

Now the old masonry fortress is an interesting museum and art gallery.

6. The Hope Diamond
This famous jewel is known the world over for its immense beauty and rather unusually large size. The 45.52-karat diamond is currently appraised at a value between $200 to $250 million. The Hope diamond isn’t just known for its beauty, but for the bad luck that follows anyone who’s ever been in possession of it. The legend dates back all the way to when King Louis XIV of France and his wife Marie Antoinette were beheaded as part of the French Revolution. Since then, a number of handlers and owners of the diamond have met ill-fated ends. Skeptics believe that the rumors about a curse are nothing more than to help drive up its value. It’s currently housed at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington.
5. The Myrtles Plantation Mirror
Considered as being one of the most haunted homes in all of the United States as well as the world, the Myrtles Plantation is said to be a hotbed of paranormal activity. The home’s history can be traced all the way back to 1796 when it was built on a Native American burial ground. Rumor has it that the plantation is the site of at least ten grizzly murders. It’s said that a mirror in the home houses the spirits of a Mrs. Sara Woodruff and her two children. Legend says when they were poisoned by a vengeful slave, the mirror was not covered as is customary which is what led to the souls becoming trapped. Some say they see tiny handprints appear on the glass.
4. The Busby Chair
It’s hard to believe that out of all things possibly imaginable a chair would be considered to be cursed, yet here we are. The busby chair was the favorite seating arrangement for a man named Thomas Busby back in the late 1600’s and early 1700’s at his local pub, now known as the Busby Stoop. So much so that it’s said the man ended up strangling his father-in-law for sitting in it. Other variations state that they were dealing in illegal ventures together and the two got into an argument that resulted in the death. Busby was eventually caught by the police and was said to curse anyone who sat in his chair before he was hung. Many deaths have been attributed to the chair and it was eventually hung on the ceiling of the Thirsk Museum to prevent people from sitting on it.
3. The Dybbuk Box
When a 103-year-old Jewish woman passed away in September of 2001, an antique dealer had bought a wine cabinet from the woman’s granddaughter. She explained to him that it must never be opened as stated by her grandmother who said it contained an evil spirit known as a dybbuk in Jewish folklore. The man put it in the basement of his shop and that’s when strange events began to unfold. He tried to pawn it off on his mother who then suffered a heart attack and spelled out “hate gift.” Every time he gave it away it was always returned. He began to see dark shadowy figures and eventually sold it on ebay to a medical museum curator in Missouri. It currently lives at the Haunted Museum in Las Vegas.
2. The Real Annabelle
The real-life Annabelle doll is actually not as frightening to look at than the one used in the movie. Annabelle is really a Raggedy Ann doll that was given to a student nurse by her mother back in 1970 as a college-going away present. The girl and her roommate began to notice strange behavior surrounding the doll and a psychic medium told them that the spirit of a young girl named Annabelle Higgins resided in it. The two girls then contacted demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren after the doll’s behavior became more malicious and frightening. The doll was removed and is now being housed at The Warrens’ Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut behind a sign that says: “Warning: Positively Do Not Open.”

In 1906, a little boy named Robert Eugene Otto was given a doll by his Bahamian servant. Now, it’s said that this servant was a practitioner of voodoo and black magic who cursed the doll as a form of revenge against her masters. Otto’s parents began witnessing strange going-ons such as hearing Otto talking to the doll and believing it spoke back to him in too deep of a voice to be the boy’s. Robert was moved to the attic where neighbors say they would see him move through the windows. Eventually, the doll was sent to the East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida where you must ask him for permission to take his picture otherwise suffer his curse. The letters behind him are of people asking him to lift his curse as they didn’t listen.

Hey guys, about 6 months ago, I posted the video of Robert The Cursed Doll. Some of you have asked me if I read the letters sent to Robert the Doll and some of you have questioned me how a doll could receive these letters. Here are some of the letters sent to Robert the Doll, I took these pictures from a TV screen in the East Martello Museum.
Dear Robert, you have probably received many letters like this from people like me. People who were sure there was no such thing as a “Robert The Doll curse”. You see, it is easy to act tough and try to impress your friends by being disrespectful. And, unfortunately, that is the camp I find myself in. My name is Dan Schulz. Back in 2009 we visited the East Martello Museum, the entire purpose of the visit was to come and meet you. We have walked by your old house multiple times over the years, and have always wanted to visit you at the museum. Our visit was fun and informative, and seeing you was the best part. I am not sure what made act like a jerk to you. I didn’t ask for your permission to take your picture, and I openly mocked you. Like I said, I was just trying to be funny and impress the people I was visiting with. I in no way actually meant what I said, and I realize now I made a big mistake. Since that day in late 2009, we have had a run of bad luck. I have had multiple health issues; (I had a near-death experience with Anemia) we have had family members and pets die, and bad luck with our finances that ended us filing for bankruptcy and still having financial difficulties. The purpose of this letter is to profoundly apologize and ask for your forgiveness. I have talked about this event on a popular travel podcast that I am the co-host of and will always speak with high respect of you. Again Robert, please accept my sincere apologies and if you see fit to forgive and end the bad luck, I would appreciate it, as would my family.

Dear Robert, I am very sorry for not asking your permission to take your picture while visiting the museum last week. Since I have take your picture without permission, many strange things have happened to me. While driving back from the keys , a deer ran out in front of our car. We had to swerve to avoid hitting it, and ran off the road. We almost hit a tree.
Two days later, we had a small kitchen fire. Also we have been hearing child like giggles from our basement. Last night I was home all alone. I heard a voice coming from the basement. When I went to investigate, I tripped and fell down the bottom three stairs. I got up to run out, but the door was locked. My husband said that I probably turned the lock myself without even thinking about it and locked myself in the basement, but honestly Robert we both know the truth. Please accept my deepest apology for taking your picture without asking. Also, please accept my daughter’s apology for sticking out her tongue at you and making fun of you. – Sincerely Rosy.
And this is one of the pictures I took, I don’t know why this completely blank. You can see something written on top, but my camera just didn’t get the rest. I have no idea how this happened. I guess I screwed up..wait Robert did it.

Key West, a U.S. island city, is part of the Florida Keys archipelago. It's also Florida's southernmost point, lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. Victims' Letters To Robert The Cursed Doll - Part 2
Hey guys, here is part 2 of the letters sent to Robert the haunted doll. Looks like he basically destroys anyone who disrespects him. Here is the first letter:
Robert, Ok, you win! I’ll admit...I wasn’t a believer but I am at the point where I definitely change my mind. We were there to see you on our honeymoon in the beginning of July. I did take pictures of you and didn’t ask or introduce myself. I have always believed in spirits and after life, but I wasn’t convinced a doll could affect me If I didn’t talk to it. However...you win... Life has been really tough since we’ve been home. My camera wouldn’t work right after we saw you, the camera card that was in it melted and the pictures can’t be recovered. I lost 2 days worth of honeymoon stuff and years worth of other memories. When we got home we discovered our camper was rotted out, we lost the tire to our boat trailer as we were arriving, my water pump went up in the truck on our way to the beach, Our A.C went up, the computer not working. So I can load .. I can't read that. My husband can’t find anyone who is hiring and has never had a problem finding a job.
We’re down to 40 dollars in the checking account and no paycheck in sight. I am Sorry..truly honestly sorry! I among many haven’t given you the respect you wanted and have paid for it. I even got court papers in the mail for being summoned into court. We will be back in Key West one day and will come back to see you and the rules won’t be ignored! We visited on my Birthday 2-18-09 and my husband purchased Robert Jr from the gift shop as my B’day gift. We returned home and I placed “Robert Jr” next to a childhood doll of mine name Lilly. The next morning I yelled for my husband to see Lilly & Robert Junior. Her face had changed. The following morning it changed again!! That night I moved Robert Jr into another room. The next morning Lilly had returned to normal. We all joked and Blamed it on Robert. We will enjoy and cherish Robert Junior. Thank again. Lisa & Joe Baylee.
$2.3 Dear Robert, I went to Key West in October 2009. I decided to come to see you. I was told to ask you before I took any pictures of you. I asked to take your picture three time of all three times my camera shut off. It was a new camera and new batteries so it wasn’t the camera. So I turned around and took a picture of the hearse behind me. Had no more problems with the camera. Well when I got home I downloaded my pictures to my computer and realized that a reflection you was in the glass on the hearse. I didn’t really think nothing of it. Shortly after my computer crashed with a virus, I got hurt at work, I lost my job, lost my new truck, lost my home. It has been a downhill slide since then. If I didn’t believe before I do now. This is the next Letter: Robert, you certainly made a believer out of me! My girlfriend and I visited you on the morning of Monday, march 2, 2009. When we passed by you I made the comment that you were creepy and stated that I was not superstitious about old stories like yours. That very night, I lost my wallet containing $240 cash, both my girlfriends and my driver's licenses as well as credit and ATM cards, trying to fly out the next day without our Photo Ids was next to impossible.
Today, was my first day back at work since arriving home, and without going into details I have had one problem after another. We also found out that whoever found or stole my wallet charged 143 dollars worth of drinks on our credit card before we were able to close the account.
I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to you for calling you names, and for not believing in your ability to bring mischief into my life. I am truly sorry Robert and hope that we can make amends after you read my apology. You are a fellow that demands respect. I look forward to visiting you on my next trip down to the Keys . We are now entering the east Martello Museum in Key West Florida which houses something very unique – Robert the Doll which inspired the movie Chucky. If you ever get a chance to visit him, don’t take a picture of him, before asking for his permission to do so. Every year, he receives hundreds of letters of apology, from former skeptics who took pictures without his permission. So what’s the story behind Robert the Doll? To understand this, we have to travel to a big Victorian mansion called the Artist house, a few miles away. It is called the Artist house because an artist, a painter grew up here. His name was Robert Eugene Otto.
When his mother was 4 months pregnant, she sends her husband to the Bahamas to find 4 helpers including a woman to take care of the baby. The trip took a little bit longer than it should have, the nanny became pregnant and Mrs. Otto is not too happy with who the father is.
So now, this young Bahamian girl has to spend 9 months locked up inside an outhouse in the backyard. If that’s not terrible, she is only fed bread and water once a day. When her own child was born, it only survives 2 months, obviously because of the mother’s starvation. Mrs. Otto is a tough slave driver; she keeps all the servants including the woman, and made the woman take care of Robert Eugene Otto, who is now a few months old.
Now, you’d probably expect the Bahamian woman to take her vengeance out on Robert, but she fell in love with this baby, even breast fed him and took him on as if he were her own. Things go smooth for a while until Mrs. Otto walks into her backyard on a full moon night to see the 4 Bahamian servants performing Santeria. What is Santeria? It is a recognized religion which started in Cuba – it’s a mix of Voodoo, Catholicism and animal sacrifices. Now, Mrs. Otto is shocked to see her 4 helpers cutting the head of a live chicken, she freaks out.
The next morning, she makes everyone pack their bags and is ready to ship them back to Bahamas. The nanny begs Mrs. Otto not to be separated from Robert. She not only lost her first child, but in a way she is losing her second child. But there is no going back once Mrs. Otto makes up her mind. So, she makes a parting gift for Robert, a three foot doll, black buttons for eyes, cloth for skin. The doll looks creepy enough, but what’s more creepy the Doll becomes Robert Gene Otto’s only playmate on the island. He would be spotted walking up and down this street talking to the doll.
Now, As soon as the nanny left, bad things started to happen in the house. Things would end up missing or broken. Being the only child, Robert Gene gets blamed for everything. But his reaction was very strange. As his mother would start to yell at him, she might go “Robert Eugene Otto” –full name, the old fashioned way of reprimanding a child, right? He would stop her and say “Don’t you ever call me that again”. He would point at the doll and say he is Robert and I am Gene. He gave the doll his own first name and kept his own middle name for himself. Gene did this every time the blame game came up “I didn’t do, Robert did it”
Years pass by, now Gene is a 19 year old man and he is still walking up and down the street with Robert. At this point the family decides to move to France, they pack up the entire house, everything except Robert the doll who gets locked in a trunk and left behind in the attic.
Gene, now without Robert starts to become more sociable in France. He meets a lovely girl and eventually they get married. As a wedding present they get the house that Gene grew up in, so they move back into the house. Now, Gene goes up in the attic and comes across a trunk, he has no idea what’s in there, opens it up. Out comes Robert and now, we have a grown married man walking up and down the street carrying adoll and talking to it. Ann, who is his wife gets pissed at this quirkiness, so she asks him to keep the doll confined to the turret. The turret is that big round thing on top. Gene agrees. After a few years, Gene becomes abusive and will sometimes even beat Ann. One time, as Ann was inspecting the old outhouse in the back yard all by herself, Gene shuts the door and locks her in the outhouse for 3 days. Wait, it was not Gene, it was .. Robert and yes it is the same outhouse the Bahamian Nanny was locked in for 9 months.
