In der Kalenderwoche 2 stelle ich euch einen weiteren spannenden Ort der Zeitgeschichte, diesmal in Belgien vor. Das Fort Eben-Emael zählte in den 1930er Jahren zu den größten und modernsten Festungen Europas. Doch mit dem Beginn der Westoffensive fiel die Festung im Mai 1940 durch den Einsatz von Hohlladungen nach zwei Tagen in die Gewalt der Wehrmacht. Diese erstmals eingesetzte Waffe durchschlug mühelos die massive Panzerung der Festung und war so geheim, das alle gefangen genommenen belgischen Soldaten in einem separierten Kriegsgefangenenlager interniert wurden, um das #Geheimnis möglichst lange zu waren. Insgesamt verloren bei den Kämpfen auf beiden Seiten 103 Soldaten ihr Leben. Noch immer im Besitz der belgischen Armee, kann das Fort Eben-Emael heute an mindestens einem Wochenende im Monat geführt besichtigt werden.

Fort Eben-Emael is in Bassenge, Belgium, at the intersection of the Albert Canal and Maas River (Meuse in French), between Maastricht and Liege. Considered the strongest fort in the world in 1940, on the first day of the Battle of France (Fall Gelb / Case Yellow), it was captured by a company of German glider troops.

At the outbreak of World War II, Fort Eben Emael in Belgium was the strongest fortress in the world, and it lay exactly across the German invasion route of Belgium and France. The forts elimination was essential for the success of Hitlers invasion of the West. Deemed impregnable to conventional attack, Hitler himself suggested the means for its capture with the first glider-borne assault in military history. On 10 May 1940, ten gliders carrying just 77 paratroopers landed on top of the fort. Using top-secret hollow-charge weapons for the first time in warfare, the assault pioneers of Sturmgruppe Granit subdued Fort Eben Emael within just 30 minutes, and the fortress surrendered within 30 hours. It remains one of the greatest raids in the annals of Special Forces.

Fort Eben Emael
In this First Episode of our new series Hitler’s Invasion of the West, ‘The Fallen Fort’ sees the team journeying from the UK and heading deep into Belgium to Fort Eben Emael. We start our day by taking a look at the Victoria Cross Action of 2nd Lt. Richard 'Dick' Annand of the Durham Light Infantry, before heading to our day’s main location towards Maastricht and Liege. Visiting the Fortress of Eben Emael, we discover all about the audacious German glider-borne assault which kick-started Hitler's assault into Western Europe on Friday 10th May 1940.
Teaming up with the various Tourism Boards and the EuroTunnel, the WW2 Nation Team hit the road again last October as we set out to explore some of the historical sites connected with Hitler’s Blitzkrieg campaign in the West during the Summer of 1940. In line with the anniversary of the offensive we will be releasing new episodes fortnightly over the course of this summer.
