Fort Ebey Mountain Biking Part 2
Fort Ebey State Park located on Whidbey Island is a great mountain bike destination. It’s on my “Trails Less Traveled” list and is great for all skill levels. I started riding Fort Ebey over 25 years ago when there were not more than just a couple trails. I rode a Trek 725 hardtail! The trail system has come a long way over the years and there are more than 20 miles of trails networked together. You can camp out, ride all day and enjoy some great beers at Penn Cove Brewing Company!
Fort Ebey is a great place to spend the weekend mountain biking with beautiful views across the Puget Sound to 20 Miles of linked trails! Great for any level! This video takes you into part 2 of the 3-part series I have done on riding in Fort Ebey on Whidbey Island Washington. Whidbey Island has three areas for riding mountain bikes: Fort Ebey (Primary), Putney Woods on the South end and finally, Hoypus Hill/Deception Pass area. Fort Ebey is located just a couple miles North of Coupeville, Washington and has a great little camp ground if you like staying the weekend and just riding all day Saturday & Even Sunday!
A little history about Whidbey Island: Whidbey Island is the larger of the two main islands that comprise Island County, Washington, in the United States. Whidbey is about 30 miles (48 km) north of Seattle and lies between the Olympic Peninsula and the I-5 corridor of western Washington. The island forms the northern boundary of Puget Sound. It is ranked as the fourth longest and fourth largest island in the contiguous United States.
When the riding is over, and you are ready for beers and food, there are some really great places to go. Two great spots to eat would be Toby’s Tavern and Front Street Grill. Once you’ve had your fill of Penn Cove Mussels, head over to Penn Cove Brewing Company and have some great locally brewed craft beer! If you didn’t already know, Coupeville is home of the world-famous mussels from Penn Coves Mussel farm. When I worked and lived in Singapore, I was able to eat Penn Cove Mussels knowing exactly where they came from! Of course, it’s a whole lot cheaper eating them in Coupeville then Singapore!
Anyway, back to Kettles Trails and Fort Ebey. Each year, there is the Coupeville Mussel Fest and along with the festival is a mountain bike ride & race. The ride is called, “Mussels in the Kettles” WIBC sponsors the event and you will have a great time! If you are into racing, then try your hand at Cookin’ in the Kettles sponsored by BuDu Racing.

Whidbey Island Life
This Personal Series is called Whidbey Island Life. These pictures were taken in the Oak Harbor and Coupeville areas. Whidbey Island is home to approximately 58,000 residents and is the 4th largest island in the United States. The economy is mainly influenced by tourism, small scale agriculture and the arts. Whidbey is also home to Whidbey Island Naval Airstation and can be reached via ferry or driving through Deception Pass, a landmark of the Puget Sound region. The song playing is called Gypsy Melodies by The Snake The Cross The Crown.
Free Cybertour of Fort Casey, near Coupeville, WA
I didn't want to pay and was the only one in the parking lot at the time. The Park Ranger station was closed when I got there. The fort doesn't look like its worth paying $10 to me. I decided to take a 10 minute tour quickly. I had to keep looking back at my car to make sure no one would check my car and give me a ticket.
You can easily see the parking lot from any part of the defense wall.
You can find this fort on the island of Whidby. The location is Washington State. The DOD determined that the inlet was very important and needed strong defense in the 1890s. So, in response, 3 forts were erected to provide defense for the inlet. One of them being Fort Casey.
The defense was specifically designed to thwart a naval attack. Unfortunately, the planners didn't foresee the invention of airplanes, which occurred in 1903. The Fort Casey bunker became obsolete quickly because Casey was no match for planes.
The design was inspiring even though planes were invented a few years later. The guns were constructed in a way to hide when not in use. They would raise and lower over the wall, raising only when about to fire on the enemy. However, no enemy came and the fort never needed to be used.
Another reason that Fort Casey became obsolete, if the planes weren't enough of an argument, was that technology and accuracy were improving. Static posts were no longer very useful since its much easier to target a static post, rather than a mobile one. Our modern day warfare is almost based entirely on being highly mobile now.
The two guns on display at Fort Casey had seen use in World War 2. They were moved to the island of the Philippines and were damaged a little by shrapnel from the Japanese bombings. In the 1960, the 2 guns were salvaged from Fort Wint on the U. S. Naval Base Subic Bay. They were restored for display purposes only afterwards.
