Buffalo Soldier Exhibit, old Fort Garland, Fort Garland, Colorado
We use a variety of equipment during a paranormal investigation. We do use flashlights (as do Ghost Hunters) to try and communicate with spirits. This is an half hour clip of such equipment used during a public investigation of the Buffalo Soldier Exhibit Room at the Fort Garland Museum.

Fort Garland Memorial Marker
This unidentified video from an 8mm handheld camera is of an unveiling of some sort of memorial marker located at what is now the picnic area 2 miles east of Fort Garland. A small crowd consisting of State Patrol, some military or Colorado National Guard equipment/personnel, and a few well dressed civilians are present. Im is thought that the memorial was in honor of a fallen WWII soldier, but this is speculation. A rough guess of the date is mid 1950s none of the cars in the tape look newer than say 1956. If anyone has any information about the contents of this video, please write SLV Dweller at info@slvdweller.com. Video submitted by Neal Newman and filmed by his father.
Explore the history of Colorado's Forts
August 1 is Colorado Day.
The Centennial State first joined the union on Aug. 1, 1876 thanks to Proclamation 230, which was signed by President Ulysses S. Grant.
As settlers from the eastern United States ventured westward, forts were created throughout the American West including Fort Collins, Fort Garland, Fort Lupton and Fort Vasquez in Colorado.
9NEWS Photojournalist Matt Bell dives into Colorado's rich history and shows us these four forts in Colorado.

Tom Tobin: True Frontiersman
Website:
Tom Tobin is an american frontiersman, scout, tracker, trapper, and occasional bounty hunter. Born in 1823, he lived a life of adventure and tackled the world as a true frontiersman with no ties to easy living. When the notorious Espinosa Bandits began to terrorize the San Luis Valley and the military was unable to handle them, Tobin was hired to bring them back to Fort Garland, dead or alive. He used his training as a tracker, scout, and rifleman to bring an end to reign. Afterwards, Tobin finally settled down in Fort Garland with his family until his death in 1904.

The opening of the West is the most colorful and romanticized period in American history, and the forts of the Western frontier were silent witnesses to this history. From the Northern Plains to the Southwest, from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, on the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail, they were forerunners of settlement, bastions of refuge, centers of trade, and outposts of diplomatic and martial relations with indigenous peoples and foreign colonial powers.

Costilla County was the first area of Colorado to be settled by European-Americans. Hispanic settlers from Taos, New Mexico, officially established San Luis on April 9, 1851. Costilla County was one of the original 17 counties created by the Territory of Colorado on November 1, 1861. The county was named for the Costilla River. Although San Miguel was originally designated the county seat, the county government was moved to San Luis in 1863.
The county's original boundaries extended over much of south-central Colorado. Much of the northern portion became part of Saguache County in 1866, and the western portions were folded into Hinsdale and Rio Grande counties in 1874. Costilla County arrived at its modern boundaries in 1913 when Alamosa County was created from its northwest portions.[4]
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,230 square miles (3,200 km2), of which 1,227 square miles (3,180 km2) is land and 304 square miles (790 km2) (0.3%) is water.[5]
