Meet Crystal Mason, the Black Texas Mother Facing 5+ Years in Prison for Voting in the 2016 Election
- We look at the shocking case of a Texas woman sentenced to five years in prison for illegally voting, who could now have even more time added to her sentence. Crystal Mason cast a provisional ballot in the 2016 presidential election despite having a past felony conviction for tax fraud that prevented her from voting. In March, she was convicted of illegal voting; she says she did not know that she was barred from casting a ballot in Texas due to her criminal record. Her supporters argue her conviction was racially biased, and point to the case of Terri Lynn Rote, a white woman in Iowa who was convicted of the same crime after she tried to vote for President Trump—twice. Rote was sentenced to two years’ probation and fined $750. Crystal Mason joins us along with her attorney, Kim Cole. Mason has a federal court hearing in Fort Worth, Texas, tomorrow, and if she loses the hearing, she will be heading to prison. We also speak with Marc Mauer, executive director of The Sentencing Project, about how policies restricting the voting rights of convicted felons disenfranchise more than 6 million people.

2016: USASAC Change of Command
The U.S. Army Security Assistance Command has a new commanding general. Maj. Gen. Stephen E. Farmen assumed command of USASAC during a June 2 ceremony on the parade field outside USASAC headquarters. Gen. Dennis L. Via, commanding general of Army Materiel Command presided over the ceremony, which signaled the departure of outgoing commander, Maj. Gen. Mark McDonald.
The ceremony was also an occasion for USASAC and the Army to bid farewell to McDonald, who served as the USASAC commanding general since June 17, 2014. McDonald will retire with 36 years of military service. During his career, he served in a variety of leadership and staff positions, including three tours in Iraq. He served as the Deputy Commanding General of III Corps and Fort Hood, Texas, and as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Fires Center of Excellence at Fort Sill, Okla., and the U.S Army Cadet Command and Fort Knox, Ky.

A prison, correctional facility, detention center[a] (US English), jail[b] (US and Australia), gaol (dated) (British English), penitentiary (sometime used in American English) or remand centre[c][d] is a facility in which inmates are forcibly confined and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state. Prisons are most commonly used within a criminal justice system: people charged with crimes may be imprisoned until they are brought to trial; those pleading or being found guilty of crimes at trial may be sentenced to a specified period of imprisonment. Besides their use for punishing crimes, jails and prisons are frequently used by authoritarian regimes against perceived opponents.
The term prison or penitentiary is often used to describe institutions that incarcerate people for longer periods of time, such as many years, while jail is often used to describe institutions focused on confining people for shorter periods of time (e.g. for shorter sentences or while waiting for trial / sentencing). Prisons often have facilities that are more designed with long term confinement in mind in comparison to jails.
Prisons can be used as a tool of political repression to punish what are deemed political crimes, often without trial or other legal due process; this use is illegal under most forms of international law governing fair administration of justice. In times of war, prisoners of war or detainees may be detained in military prisons or prisoner of war camps, and large groups of civilians might be imprisoned in internment camps.
