Fort Montgomery Rouses Point NY
I got permission to go to an old fort called Fort Montgomery in Rouses Point. Here are the pictures and video from the visit.
Construction of this fort started in 1844 and was not finished until around 1870. The name Montgomery comes from the architect Montgomery C. Meigs who is the person responsible for its design.
Currently the fort is unstable and needs to be shored back up. The current owner has been trying to find ways to shore it up but it is a costly problem.
Disclaimer, exploring old and abandoned buildings can be dangerous and/or illegal. Always get permission to visit a location and always let someone know where you are so if something happens people know where to look for you.

Hiking The Appalachian Trail From Wind Gap Pa. To Fort Montgomery NY
Where to start….
From the beginning at Springer Mountain I
Felt excited to get started on my journey from the bus depot.
My pack was heavy and the mountains felt high and with 10 days of food and plenty of water around,( we followed Stover creek for some time) I forged north.
The first night I slept next to Stover Creek Shelter and setting up camp came right to me
for I had done this so many times before.
Day two left me looking for water in the afternoon at Hawk Mountain Shelter
I hade a hard time finding the water and when I returned to my gear at the shelter
Weather was coming in and it didn’t look good. It got really dark and the temperature started to drop when you could hear the thunder roll in and getting louder. As I hustled to set up my tent the rain came and I grabbed my pack closing the flap behind me.
It poured so hard, lightening crashing all-around me, hail stones just smaller than ping-pong balls and the land flooded around my tent. My floor felt like a waterbed mattress.
The rain slowed for a moment, I ran out and saw a higher piece of ground, dragged my tent to it and dove right back in.
This storm raged on for 14 hours, the next day the moisture caused due drops to fall from the leaves most of the day, warm I just wore my t-shirt and forged on. It took my gear two days to dry out; thankfully my laptop was double bagged as I write my tale.
Three days and I was exhausted, I could hardly think past hiking, I was in survivor mode
and was operating in Lizard Brain, the bare minimum of a humanoid. I couldn’t really hold a conversation very well or really wanted too, I was so tired.
I knew this would happen and I went slowly not to get injured, a blowout knee or a twisted ankle could end my journey before it really begins.
Today I am at Hiawassee Georgia, its evening; I purchased all the food I need to make it to my next resupply in Franklin North Carolina. I ate a huge meal and am doctoring my minor wounds, preparing for the next leg of my journey.
Franklin North Carolina is a famous spot for prospecting Ruby’s, Emeralds and Safire.
My plan is to mine for two days and ship my gems back home to await my return.
This adventure has just begun and I can’t imagine what the future holds….
I have trimmed my pack weight from 85 to 65 pounds and its still heavy, and the people who carry 35 pounds……they say their packs are heavy too…..it’s all in your mind….
It’s heavy if you choose it to be so…..
I carry my pack, it is part of me now…..it is all I have…it is all I am…..
An observer of nature, living and flowing with her….
I am wild….I am free… I am…. I said….

Fort Putnam was a military garrison during the Revolutionary War at West Point, New York, United States.Built by a regiment of Colonel Rufus Putnam's 5th Massachusetts Regiment, it was completed in 1778 with the purpose of supporting Fort Clinton, which sat on the edge of the Hudson River about a 3/4 of a mile away. The fort was rebuilt and enlarged in 1794 before falling into disuse and disrepair as the military garrison at West Point became obsolete in the early mid-19th century. It underwent a major preservation as a historical site in 1909, and has been continually in the process of preservation since.

Railfanning New York State: One of the Most Beautiful Places in America!
September, 2015:
It is safe to say that the CSX River Line is one of the most scenic in the country, if not the world. With the water going right to it's edges, and the beautiful mountain scenery, it is a wonderful place to shoot. Whether you are railfanning at the long strait away at CP-22, or the Curvy and mountainous CP-43, you will always get the shot you want!
This video shows 9 trains traversing the River Sub rails in September 2015. The busy afternoon starts at CP-22 as K048, a loaded oil train, pulls off the siding with two CP units. You won't be disappointed with the power on this line either! Then it was off the beautiful CP-43, located in Fort Montgomery, NY. Here we caught Manifest Q417, Intermodal Q158, and Manifest Q409. Then Manifest Q438 came NB and went in the hole to wait for K140. K140 came South with a UP/BNSF combo in the setting sun. Then we chased him to CP-26 for one more sunset shot of him. Then following him turned out to be Q114 with two C40-8s. Lets take a minute to really look at this train as you will never see these engines again on CSX as they have all been retired as of October 2016. One final train was W985 with a single SD40-3 and a high and wide Transformer. That ended this beautiful day on the lower River Sub! I will be making one of these for the Upper River Sub at some point in 2017.

Thanks For Watching and Enjoy!
Crown Point State Historic Site
Crown Point State Historic Site is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the ruins of two fortifications from the colonial wars between the British and French. Long before the American Revolution these colonial powers both laid claim to the Champlain Valley and this strategically important peninsula known as Crown Point. The French built Fort St. Frederic here between 1734 and 1737 and used it as a base for raids on British settlements in New York and New England. As a result, the British mounted various expeditions to take control of Crown Point, and in 1759 they were finally successful. They immediately began construction of new fortifications that they called His Majesty's Fort of Crown Point. Enclosing over seven acres this was one of the largest built by the British in North America.
In 1775, at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, the American colonists captured the fort and secured sorely needed cannons and heavy ordnance. Crown Point was occupied by General John Burgoyne's army in 1777 after the American evacuation to Mount Independence and remained under British control until the end of the war. The ruins of Fort St. Frederic, His Majesty's Fort of Crown Point, and surrounding lands were acquired by the State of New York in 1910.
Today, visitors can explore the preserved ruins of these forts and tour the museum which includes a multimedia orientation program, large scale models, and an exhibit of original artifacts recovered from the site by archaeologists. Additionally, the site offers access to the historic Crown Point Pier, the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse, the walking paths on either side of the newly constructed Lake Champlain Bridge, and fantastic views of Lake Champlain.
Village of Montgomery surveyed in 1868 by J. M. Morrison
For many years, the Morrison map has been missing. When the Bank of America closed down on Union Street, it was found in the attic and brought up to the Village Museum. I met up with Village of Montgomery Historian, Marion Wild, and she talks about the Montgomery, New York Survey by J.M. Morrison done in 1868.

Battle of Oriskany (6 August 1777) - United States & Oneida vs Great Britain & Mohawk
With your donations I can get more time to create and upload new videos.

Cut from American movie The Broken Chain 1993.
The Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777 was one of the bloodiest battles in the American Revolutionary War and a significant engagement of the Saratoga campaign. A party of Loyalists and several Indian allies ambushed an American military party that was trying to relieve the siege of Fort Stanwix. This was one of the few battles in which almost all of the participants were Americans; Patriots and allied Oneidas fought against Loyalists and allied Iroquois in the absence of British regular soldiers.
The Patriot relief force came from the Mohawk Valley under General Nicholas Herkimer and numbered around 800 men of the Tryon County militia plus a party of Oneida warriors. British commander Barry St. Leger authorized an intercepting force consisting of a Hanau Jäger (light infantry) detachment, Sir John Johnson's King's Royal Regiment of New York, Indian allies from the Six Nations, particularly Mohawks and Senecas and other tribes to the north and west, and Indian Department Rangers, totaling at least 450 men.
The Loyalist and Indian force ambushed Herkimer's force in a small valley about six miles (10 km) east of Fort Stanwix, near the village of Oriskany, New York. Herkimer was mortally wounded, and the battle cost the Patriots approximately 450 casualties, while the Loyalists and Indians lost approximately 150 dead and wounded. The result of the battle remains ambiguous. The apparent Loyalist victory was significantly affected by a sortie from Fort Stanwix in which the Loyalist camps were sacked, damaging morale among the allied Indians.
The battle also marked the beginning of a war among the Iroquois, as Oneida warriors under Colonel Louis and Han Yerry allied with the American cause. Most of the other Iroquois tribes allied with the British, especially the Mohawks and Senecas. Each tribe was highly decentralized, and there were internal divisions among bands of the Oneida, some of whom also migrated to Canada as allies of the British. The site is known in Iroquois oral histories as A Place of Great Sadness. The site has been designated a National Historic Landmark; it is marked by a battle monument at the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site.
