Fort Mose
Explore Research at the University of Florida: Kathleen Deagan, a Distinguished Research Curator Emeritus of Historical Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, discusses the Fort Mose excavation and its importance. Founded in 1738, Fort Mose was the first legally sanctioned town of free black people in what is today the United States. The Fort Mose site has been the focus of a multidisciplinary historical archaeological research program since 1986, carried out by the Florida Museum and funded by the state of Florida.
Firsthand Florida Fun: Fort Mose Historic State Park
Visiting the museum reminded me of the heroics people undertook to be free, both in reaching Fort Mose, fighting for it, and then fleeing once more across the ocean to find a better life. Looking back from my 21st century vantage point, I take the idea of freedom for granted.

Places to see in ( St. Augustine - USA )
St. Augustine is a city on the northeast coast of Florida. It lays claim to being the oldest city in the U.S., and is known for its Spanish colonial architecture as well as Atlantic Ocean beaches like sandy St. Augustine Beach and tranquil Crescent Beach. Anastasia State Park is a protected wildlife sanctuary. The Castillo de San Marcos is a 17th-century Spanish stone fortress with views of the St. Augustine Inlet.
St Augustine is a small jewel of a city on the east coast, full of romantic ambiance and old world charm. It is best known for its remarkable historic streets, Spanish style architecture, and panoramic bay. Do take time to wander down St. George street, a promenade of sorts, and enjoy the art galleries, quaint shops, and restaurants.
St. Augustine is best known as the oldest European settlement in the United States. Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon, claimed the land now known as Florida in the name of Spain on March 27, 1513. Originally the land was named La Florida, which means Land of Flowers. The city was founded by Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565. What makes St Augustine so genuinely endearing is the accessibility of its rich history via countless top-notch museums and the authenticity of its centuries-old architecture, monuments and narrow cobbled lanes. Unlike Florida's numerous historical theme parks, St Augustine is the real deal.

About the Fort
(From www .nps. gov /casa)
How old is the fort? Construction began on October 2, 1672 so the fort is over 333 years old.
Who built the fort? Why did they build it here? The Castillo was built by the Spanish to protect their interests in La Florida. With the discovery and use of the Gulf Stream by the Spanish Treasure fleets it became important to establish a military outpost to keep rival powers and pirates from threatening Spanish commerce.
How long did it take to build the fort? The Castillo has has two major construction periods, from 1672 to its initial completion in 1695, and again from 1738 to 1756. This final renovation is commemorated by the dedicatory plaque above the sally port entrance to the fort.
What is Coquina? Where does it come from? Coquina (Spanish for tiny shell), is a soft limestone made up of broken shells and sand cemented together by calcium carbonate, essentially creating a natural form of concrete. The stone for the Castillo was quarried on nearby Anastasia island.
What does Castillo mean? Castillo is the Spanish word for castle. Although no king or queen lived here, the Castillo de San Marcos was like a castle in one way-- it was used to defend a town.

VISIT FLORIDA: Fort Mose
More than a hundred years before the Emancipation Proclamation, what's being touted as the original underground railroad, took slaves from British colonies south to Spanish La Florida in search of promised freedom. They found it at Fort Mose in St. Augustine, Florida. CycleHere Media produced this piece for visitflorida.com.

Fort Mose - First Colony: Our Spanish Origins
Fort Mose was the first legally sanctioned free black community in what is now the United States. In this video, a soldier re-enactor at Fort Mose Historic State Park discusses the fort's role in the defense of Spanish Florida against the English during colonial times. A Quick Guide to St Augustine, FL
Dating back to the 16th Century, St. Augustine is the oldest permanent settlement (of European origin) in what is now the continental United States. St. Augustine has plenty of great attractions to visit including the Castillo de San Marcos, the Colonial Quarter, the pedestrian walkway of St. George St, Fort Mose Historic State Park, and the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. The city also offers many different museums which are fun for everyone! Restaurants are also quite plentiful including Crave, a food truck located just southwest of downtown. I also cover the restaurant in a separate Travel Delights video:
When visiting northeast Florida, definitely make a stop in St. Augustine!

AMH 102: The Negro Fort
The Battle of Negro Fort was a short military siege in 1816 in which forces of the United States assaulted and managed to blow up an African-American fortified stronghold in the frontier of northern Spanish Florida.

This is the first settlement of free blacks sanctioned by a government in the United States. We went to the park an walked along the boardwalk to the overlook to see where the fort was located.
America's Original Underground Railroad Went South to Florida | ChadGallivanter
Long before Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, British slaves from the Carolinas sought freedom by heading south to Florida. Spain promised freedom to anyone who made their way through the harsh wilderness to a place called Fort Mose just north of St. Augustine.
We visit the site, which is now a historic state park, on a special weekend during Black History Month where re-enactors brought this underlooked part of American history to life.

St. Augustine, FL: Exploring Europe's First American Settlement
I spend the first half of my full day in northeast Florida exploring St. Augustine, the oldest European-settled city in the continental United States. I had always wanted to go here, and I get to check out many cool sites from the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park where I got to drink from the Fountain of Youth, check out the Castillo de San Marcos (although the interior was closed due to the U.S. government shutdown), walk around the historic district including the Colonial Quarter, and check out Fort Mose Historic State Park. St. Augustine is a fun city to explore, and I highly recommend it to everyone!
I am planning to upload another St. Augustine video soon which will serve as a quick guide to the city based on my experiences there.

A Crumbling Moorish Dream Is Resurrected -- In Florida
Domes and minarets are a common sight in Opa-locka, a Florida city born out of a developer's dream for an Arabian-themed wonderland. But the city didn't turn out to be an oasis, its reputation tarnished by drug-related violence. Now a local NGO hopes to breathe new life into Opa-locka by turning it into an arts hub.
