Fort Mott, located in Pennsville, Salem County, New Jersey, was part of the Harbor Defenses of the Delaware, a three-fort defense system designed for the Delaware River during the postbellum and Endicott program modernization periods following the American Civil War and in the 1890s. The other two forts in the system were Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island and Fort DuPont in Delaware City, Delaware.
Fort Mott was part of a three-fort defense system designed for the Delaware River during the post Civil War modernization period. The other two forts in the system were Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island and Fort DuPont in Delaware City, Delaware. Original plans for Fort Mott specified eleven gun emplacements with twenty guns and a mortar battery with six emplacements. Construction was started in 1872; however, only two of the gun emplacements and two magazines in the mortar battery were completed by 1876 when all work stopped.
Fort Mott, along with Fort Delaware and Fort DuPont, became obsolete as the principal defensive installation on the Delaware River with the construction of Fort Saulsbury, near Milford, Delaware, shortly after World War I.
Troops were regularly stationed at Fort Mott from 1897 to 1922. The federal government maintained a caretaking detachment at the fort from 1922 to 1943. New Jersey acquired the military reservation as a historic site and State park in 1947. The park was opened to the public on June 24, 1951.

Crossing Delaware Memorial Bridge From New Jersey to Delaware
The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a twin suspension bridge crossing the Delaware River. The toll bridges carry Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 40 between Delaware and New Jersey. The bridge was designed by the firm known today as HNTB with consulting help from engineer Othmar Ammann, whose other designs include the Walt Whitman Bridge (which is similar in appearance, except for the fact that it is a single span) and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. It is also one of only two crossings of the Delaware River with both U.S. Highway and Interstate Highway designations, the other being the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
The bridges provide a regional connection for long-distance travelers.[1] While not a part of Interstate 95, they connect two parts of the highway: the Delaware Turnpike (Interstate 95 in Delaware) on the south side with the New Jersey Turnpike (later Interstate 95 in New Jersey) on the north side. They also connect Interstate 495, U.S. Route 13, and Route 9 in New Castle, Delaware with U.S. Route 130 in Pennsville Township, New Jersey (at the settlement of Deepwater, New Jersey).
The bridges are dedicated to those from both New Jersey and Delaware who died in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. On the Delaware side of the bridge is a War Memorial, visible from the northbound-side lanes. The toll facility is operated by the Delaware River and Bay Authority.
The Delaware Memorial Bridge is the southernmost fixed vehicular crossing of the Delaware River and the only fixed vehicular crossing between Delaware and New Jersey. However, at Fort Mott, N.J., there is a small amount of land on the New Jersey side of the river that is part of the State of Delaware, and thus there are pedestrian crossings in between those states, but not spanning the river. The Cape May–Lewes Ferry provides an alternate route between travelers from New Jersey and the Northeastern States to southern Delaware.

Allaire State Park NJ
One weekend I decided to take a stroll with my camera through the village, at Allaire State Park.
Allaire Village is a living history museum located within New Jersey's Allaire State Park in Wall Township, New Jersey. The village was originally established as a bog iron furnace known as the Howell Works, which the company's owner, philanthropist James P. Allaire, endeavoured to turn into a self-contained community. Allaire Village and its existing buildings are now operated by a non-profit organization - Allaire Village, Inc. The buildings which remain today include a general store, blacksmith shop, carpenters shop, managers house, foremans house and a church. One of the workers' row house buildings is now the Visitor Center and Museum. Historic interpreters work using period tools and equipment in the blacksmith, tinsmith, and carpentry shops, while the old bakery sells cookies, and general store serves as a museum store. The church building is frequently used for weddings.
The Pine Creek Railroad is adjacent to the village. It was established in 1953, and is an example of rail travel at the height of the steam era in the United States. The live-steam and diesel, narrow-gauge trains are operated by the NJ Museum of Transportation.

A Confederate Monument Stands In NJ
CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL
From Charlottesville, VA, to Durham, NC, to Baltimore, activists and city officials are demanding the removal of monuments to Confederate generals and those who fought for the Southern side during the Civil War.
But there is a little-known Confederate monument in, of all places, New Jersey.
In Finns Point Cemetery in Salem County, an 85-foot obelisk pays tribute to more than 2,000 Confederates who died while prisoners of war, being held in camps on islands in the Delaware River.
In a far corner of the cemetery are other markers to former enemies of the United States: the graves of 13 German soldiers captured during World War II who died while being held at Fort Dix.

1861-1865: Fort Delaware, the largest and most state-of the-art military fortress of its kind, was also the centerpiece of a thriving and unique community. A blend of Civil War Confederate prisoners, Union soldiers, and civilians, it was for a brief time one of the largest cities in all of Delaware. An impregnable fortress turned into a virtually inescapable prison, it housed POWs captured at battles such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg, along with several now famous political prisoners. The story of Fort Delaware is more than the story of a military marvel, it is a story of the people who lived and died there, the effects of the Civil War on a border state, and the indefatigable spirit of American ingenuity.
