Fort Myers or Ft. Myers, is the county seat and commercial center of Lee County, Florida, United States. Fort Myers is a gateway to the Southwest Florida region and a major tourist destination within Florida. The winter estates of Thomas Edison (Seminole Lodge) and Henry Ford (The Mangoes) are major attractions. The city is named after Colonel Abraham Myers.
Spain originally had colonial influence in Florida, succeeded by Great Britain and, lastly, the United States. During the American Indian Wars of the 1830s, the United States built Fort Myers as one of the first forts along the Caloosahatchee River; it was used as a base of operations against the Seminole. During the Seminole Wars and Indian Removal period, Fort Myers was a strategic location, with access to Atlantic waterways. While many Seminole were forced to remove to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River, others used their knowledge of the Everglades and Florida wilderness to resist the Americans. They were never defeated and two federally recognized Seminole tribes still control some of their historic territory.
In 1947, Mina Edison deeded Seminole Lodge to the City of Fort Myers, in memory of her late husband and for the enjoyment of the public. By 1988, the adjacent Henry Ford winter estate was purchased by the city and opened for public tours in 1990. The combined properties today are known as the Edison and Ford Winter Estates.

The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is a private, not-for-profit, environmental education organization. Set on a 105-acre (0.42 km2) site, it has a museum, three nature trails, a planetarium, butterfly and bird aviaries, a gift shop and meeting and picnic areas.

Walking around Fort Myers Beach, Florida
Southwest Florida beach businesses are recovering from money lost due to red tide and fish kills. Now some hotels on Fort Myers Beach are going all-out to bring visitors back with some tempting deals for Labor Day weekend.
Sunday and Monday night, they can stay with us in our Gulf-front rooms for $69 a night, said Melissa Schneider, marketing director for Lani Kai Island Resort.
Everyone on the beach has been affected by (red tide,) and that's why we're hoping that by offering this really great deal, it'll help spur things back up in the community, she added.
It was just a few weeks ago that red tide - and lots of dead fish - made breathing a real problem at the beach. The Junkanoo restaurant had to close early one afternoon because employees and customers were coughing.
Now that conditions are improving, some beach bar and restaurant customers are helping to ease the pain for servers by paying them tips that equal the amount on their bill.
They've been offering that as a tip, and even more than that, Schneider said. I know that our servers and wait staff highly appreciate it.
The Silver Sands Resort is also reducing their rates for the holiday weekend, but so far the response has been mixed.
We've had everything from 'I'm canceling' to 'I saw your deal, I'm going to book,' said Silver Sands owner Andrea Carriere. But we've been over to the beach, and it's absolutely beautiful.
Local band Shore Patrol had a performance on Fort Myers Beach canceled in August, but are scheduled to perform Saturday night at Pincher's. Lead singer Chris Day hopes the holiday weekend is the start of better fortunes for local musicians - and the businesses that hire them.
Local businesses support live music, but when something like this (red tide) happens, they're cutting back, and it really affects everyone downstream, he said.
Lani Kai will have the band A200 playing in the resort's Club Ohana nightclub Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. They will also have a reggae band performing during the daytime on Saturday and Sunday.
Driving from Fort Myers to the Shell Factory - North Fort Myers, Florida
U.S. Route 41 Business is a former segment of U.S. Route 41 in Downtown Fort Myers and North Fort Myers, Florida. North of State Road 80, it carries the hidden designation State Road 739.
The road begins at the interchange of US 41 and SR 82-867, historically known as the Five Points Interchange. The road briefly overlaps SR 80 along Main and Monroe Streets, where it becomes discontinuous (it once continued east along with SR 80 though downtown along the then-one-way Second and Bay Streets but those streets were turned over to city control in 2006).
Business US 41 resumes along SR 739 at SR 80, where it runs along Park Avenue (northbound) and Fowler Street (southbound) until they reach the Edison Bridge where the two streets merge. After crossing over the Caloosahatchee River BUS 41 enters North Fort Myers where it briefly becomes a six-lane undivided highway only for the divider to return north of Cabanna Avenue. The road heads north, intersecting with State Road 78. Between State Road 78 and Powell Drive, the road becomes a four-lane divided highway for the remainder of the route. The road finally ends at a former wye at US 41.

Driving from Downtown Fort Myers to Fort Myers Shores, Florida
State Road 80 begins at an intersection with US 41 (Tamiami Trail) in downtown Fort Myers. From the terminus, it runs briefly along Main Street and Monroe Street though historic downtown Fort Myers to State Road 82, where it becomes discontinuous. State Road 80 resumes at Fowler Street (US 41 Business/SR 739), where it runs east as a pair of two-lane, one-way streets weaving through central Fort Myers, with westbound lanes on First Street, and the eastbound lanes running on Second Street. The eastbound lanes rejoin the westbound lanes via Seaboard Street (a former Seaboard Air Line Railroad corridor) just east of Dean Park, forming the four-lane divided Palm Beach Boulevard. From there, it follows the Caloosahatchee River east out of the city, expanding to six lanes east of the Ortiz Avenue (CR 865) intersection in Tice. It has an interchange with Interstate 75 as it passes through the eastern suburbs of Fort Myers before being reduced to four lanes east of SR 31 before leaving Lee County
