FEAST of the Hunters' Moon
This is a little tease to a historical documentary I am doing on The FEAST of the Hunters' Moon. The FEAST of the Hunters' Moon is recognized as one of the top festivals in the state of Indiana. It takes place each fall at Fort Ouiatenon on the Wabash River about 4 miles downstream from Lafayette. This rendezvous is a re-creation of the annual fall gathering of the French and Native Americans at this fur-trading outpost in the mid 1700s. The program will hopefully capture the spectacle and excitement of this 18th century world and tells how this festival came to be.
In this segment we hear from William Baugh, who was a junior high school history teacher at Rossville Indiana in 1967 when his students completed a history club project that was so amazing it led to the creation of this festival, the first 18th Century living history festival in the nation. Del Bartlett tells how he discovered the actual site of the original Fort Ouiatenon when he was a student at Purdue University.

West Lafayette, Tippecanoe county, west-central Indiana, U.S. It lies along the Wabash River (bridged) opposite Lafayette. A town was platted on the west bank of the Wabash in 1836, but it failed to attract settlers because it was located in an area prone to flooding. A second settlement was founded on higher ground in 1855 as Kingston; it was later reorganized and combined with the adjacent town of Chauncey in 1866 under the latter town’s name. It was renamed West Lafayette in 1888. Primarily residential, it is the seat of Purdue University (1869). Nearby are the Tippecanoe Battlefield National Historic Landmark and the site of Fort Ouiatenon (1717), the first white settlement in Indiana and a trading and military post controlled at different times by the French, British, and Native Americans. Attendees of the Summit will benefit from development seminars, panel discussions, and business and policy leaders who will share their keys to success and the work being done to improve growth in the area of business diversity. As with alot of the Wabash River from just north of Lafayette to this field water has flooded into fields like this one.This field on the west side of The Wabash River has 100s of acres that is clearly flooded because of all the rain that this area of Indiana has gotten the past 2 weeks

Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and the state of Texas to the west. A large part of its eastern boundary is demarcated by the Mississippi River. Louisiana is the only U.S. state with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are equivalent to counties. The state's capital is Baton Rouge, and its largest city is New Orleans.
Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibis and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape, and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of terrestrial orchids and carnivorous plants. Louisiana has more Native American tribes than any other southern state, including four that are federally recognized, ten that are state recognized, and four that have not received recognition.Some Louisiana urban environments have a multicultural, multilingual heritage, being so strongly influenced by a mixture of 18th-century French, Haitian, Spanish, Native American, and African cultures that they are considered to be exceptional in the US. Before the American purchase of the territory in 1803, present-day Louisiana State had been both a French colony and for a brief period a Spanish one. In addition, colonists imported numerous African people as slaves in the 18th century. Many came from peoples of the same region of West Africa, thus concentrating their culture. In the post-Civil War environment, Anglo-Americans increased the pressure for Anglicization, and in 1921, English was for a time made the sole language of instruction in Louisiana schools before a policy of multilingualism was revived in 1974. There has never been an official language in Louisiana, and the state constitution enumerates the right of the people to preserve, foster, and promote their respective historic, linguistic, and cultural origins.

Under French control 1682 to 1762 and 1802 (nominally) to 1803, the area was named in honor of King Louis XIV, by French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle. It originally covered an expansive territory that included most of the drainage basin of the Mississippi River and stretched from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Appalachian Mountains to the Rocky Mountains.
Louisiana included two regions, now known as Upper Louisiana (French: la Haute-Louisiane), which began north of the Arkansas River, and Lower Louisiana (French: la Basse-Louisiane). The U.S. state of Louisiana is named for the historical region, although it is only a small part of the vast lands claimed by France.French exploration of the area began during the reign of Louis XIV, but French Louisiana was not greatly developed, due to a lack of human and financial resources. As a result of its defeat in the Seven Years' War, France was forced to cede the east part of the territory in 1763 to the victorious British, and the west part to Spain as compensation for Spain losing Florida. France regained sovereignty of the western territory in the secret Third Treaty of San Ildefonso of 1800. But strained by obligations in Europe, Napoleon Bonaparte sold the territory to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, ending France's presence in Louisiana.
