Fort Phoenix is an American Revolutionary War-era fort located at the entrance to the Fairhaven-New Bedford harbor, south of U.S. 6 in Fort Phoenix Park in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The fort was originally built in 1775 without a name, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Just off the fort in Buzzards Bay was the first naval engagement of the American Revolution, the Battle off Fairhaven on 14 May 1775.On 5–6 September 1778, the fort was destroyed by the British when they raided the harbor. A force under Major Israel Fearing drove off the British, both at the fort and when they attempted an attack on the town the next day. The fort was then renamed Fort Fearing. In 1784 it was given the name Fort Phoenix after the mythical bird that rose from its own ashes.
The fort was rebuilt in 1798, and rebuilt again in 1808 with 12 guns with Commonwealth resources, contemporary with but not part of the second system of US fortifications.In the War of 1812, HMS Nimrod bombarded the fort on 13 June 1814 when the local militia refused to surrender some guns. After an exchange of fire Nimrod sailed away. Local accounts differ as to whether she launched boats carrying a landing party that were driven off, or not. This event is confused in some references with an attack by the same ship on Falmouth on 29 January 1814.The fort currently has five iron cannons mounted on reproduction wooden carriages. The cannons are Model 1819 24-pounders and were all made in the 1820s.
There is also a smaller cannon at the fort which was captured by the Continental Marines during the raid on Nassau in the Bahamas in 1776. This raid was the first amphibious landing on foreign soil by United States Marines.
The fort was rebuilt with a new powder magazine and regarrisoned with eight guns in the Civil War.During World War II an Anti-Motor Torpedo Boat (AMTB) battery of four towed 37 mm guns was at the fort.

Then headed back to Hurricane Barrier on the Fairhaven side. The pathway from Fairhaven over the bridge into the city waterfront is incredible! Note: Once entering the city from the bridge ramp out of Fairhaven, the beautiful red brick path bringing you down to the Union St intersection, the excitement begins to breakdown. The goal to reach the New Bedford side of the barrier with its newly touted walkway-bike path from this point falls apart quickly. From the unsightly power plant headed south, things turn even uglier for a bicyclist. Broken sidewalks and huge holes alongside Rt 18 mark the end for not only bikes, but cars as well. The gauntlet gets worse as the traffic thickens and some points no path at all. This is where, its not worth it to continue into the unwelcoming abyss of a dense neighborhood of triple deckers. This is probably the most U-turned section of the city and rightfully so. For a continued safe bike way, the solution could entail some kind of egress through the power plant property to get to the hurricane barrier path. Thinking outside the box.

Haunted Adventure in Massachusetts, Fort Taber's Underground Tunnels
Join us on a small adventure as we go into haunted Fort Taber's underground tunnels in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It is said that disembodied voices and footsteps can be heard when no one is around and some have reported seeing ghostly apparitions walking along the old hallways and corridors.
After the Civil War began in April 1861, it was apparent that the Fort at Clark's Point was still years from completion. Fort Taber, a small earthwork with six cannon, was built nearby with city resources and named after New Bedford's mayor during that period. It provided a temporary defense until the stone fort was garrisoned in 1863. Fort Taber is marked by a stone outline today, directly behind the stone fort. It was noted at the time that the stone fort's presence interfered with effective fire from Fort Taber, and a battery of field artillery was emplaced east of Fort Taber. The Fort Taber name was unofficially used to refer to the Fort at Clark's Point for many years, even by the garrison in letters home, and is used to refer to the stone fort in some recent references.

The Fort Taber Fort Rodman Historical Association, Inc. in cooperation with the City of New Bedford are sponsoring a living history camp Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8, 2016, as part of the continuing recognition of the Centennial Observance of World War I (1914 – 1918).
The camp will be open, free to the public, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day. Re-enactors representing American, British, French, Canadian, and German soldiers will provide a living history camp at the City’s Fort Taber Park.
World War I, also known as the First World War or the Great War, began on July 28, 1914, and ended at 11:00 AM on November 11, 1918, (11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month).
The war was a global conflict mostly centered in Europe but saw significant fronts in Africa, Middle East, Southwest Asia, and in the Pacific Islands. More than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war, a casualty rate exacerbated by the belligerents’ technological and industrial sophistication, and tactical stalemate. It was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, paving the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations involved.

A Rare LOOK Inside The Hurricane Barrier - New Bedford, MA
Take a look inside and go under the harbor through the tunnel! New Bedford enjoys its reputation as a safe harbor thanks to the Hurricane Barrier. The stone and steel barrier extends across the mouth of New Bedford harbor to the Fairhaven side near Fort Phoenix. It is 9,100 feet long and twenty feet above median sea level. The harbor section has two 440-ton gates in the center that can be closed during strong tides or storms to protect the inner harbor. The western section protects the city from tidal surges in Clark's Cove. This clip taken from the 1988-M.L.Baron award winning classic: A Wind To Shake The World; The Story of The 1938 Hurricane. This was the video version of Everett S. Allen's 1976 Best Seller, chronicling the '38 Hurricane. from the historic archives of the West Island Weather Station. The top of the barrier provides a walkway for recreational activites. Residents and visitors can watch the coming and going of commercial vessels and pleasure boats, or enjoy spectacular views of the harbor, cityscapes, and Buzzards Bay. Check out some of ML's video clips on the dike. Built in the 1960's by the Army Corps of Engineers, the Hurricane Barrier is the largest stone structure on the East Coast.
