FORT SAM HOUSTON - QUADRANGLE- PART 3
THE QUADRANGLE IWAS ORIGINALLY SEVERAL MILES FROM THE CENTER OF TOWN IN THE 19TH CENTURY. TODAY OF COURSE, IT'S SURROUNDED BY THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO DUE TO THE CIY'S GROWTH SINCE THE FORT WAS BUILT.
NOTE THE BEAUTIFUL PEACOCKS THAT MAKE UP JUST SOME OF WILDLIFE THAT LIVE WITHIN THE QUADRANGLE.

Yalkalye, was known as the fierces Apache war chief, Geronimo. In 1886 he and others were imprisoned at Fort Sam Houston Quadrangle, located in San Antonio, TX., home of the world famous Alamo. Geronimo spent most of his time as a POW. YES! A prisoner of war in his own lands, that's now called the United States. Video of quadrangle with peacocks. The peacocks were the food staple of the Apaches and are still kept there in rememberance of the last fighting Natives with Geronimo.
Fort Sam Houston
Film footage shot by Matt Konop in and around Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas in the early 1940s. He had enlisted in the US Army in December, 1940 and arrived in San Antonio with his wife and three small children on December 31, 1940. They will still wearing their winter boots from the 1600 mile journey south from Two Rivers, Wisconsin. He entered the Second Infantry Division as a Captain, qualifying as an officer based on being the commander of a Civilian Conservation Corps work camp in Northern Wisconsin. He was also in the Army Reserves. When he got to Texas, he found that he was in over his head, surrounded by other officers who knew what they were doing. By the time he returned from combat as a Lt. Colonel in summer, 1945 he had learned quite a bit about being an officer.

One of the oldest Military command posts in the United States is Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. The Army has been in San Antonio since 1845 but Fort Sam was established at this location in 1876. It is the best medical training facility in the world.

FORT MARTIN SCOTT, FREDRICKSBURG, TEXAS. THIS FORT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST FORTS ERECTED IN TEXAS AFTER TEXAS BECAME A STATE.
IT WAS ESTABLISHED TO PROTECT EARLY SETTLERS IN THE FREDRICKSBURG AREA AGAINST COMMACHE ATTACKS, AS THE AREA WAS PART OF COMMANCHERIA, CONTROLLED FIERCELY BY THE COMMANCHE FOR MANY YEARS.
COMMANCHERIA STRETCHED FROM THE PLAINS OF NEBRASKA TO SOUTH TEXAS. THE OUTER MOST REACH ENCOMPASSING SAN ANTONIO.
IN 1840 DURING A PARLEY WITH THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS OFFICIALS AND THE MILITARY, INCLUDING THE TEXAS RANGERS HELD IN SAN ANTONIO, THE TEXANS FIRED UNDER A FLAG OF TRUCE UPON THE COMMANCHE CHIEFS KILLING OVER 30 COMMANCHES AND STARTING A WAR THAT WOULD RAVAGE BETWEEN THE COMMANCHE AND THE WHITE SETTLERS COMING INTO THE COMMANCHE'S TERRITORY.
THIS BATTLE WAS KNOWN AS THE COUNCIL HOUSE FIGHT IN SAN ANTONIO.
AS A REPRISAL, THE COMMANCHES ATTACKED VICTORIA, TEXAS, LOOTING THE STORES AND WAREHOUSES AND COMPLETELY DESTROYED THE TOWN ONF LINVILLLE, NEAR PRESENT DAY PORT LAVACA.
THEY WERE PERSUED BY THE TEXAS RANGERS AND OTHER SETTLERS IN RUNNING BATTLE KNOWN AS PLUM CREEK BETWEEN LOCKHART, TEXAS AND PRESENT DAY KYLE, TEXAS WHICH IS LOCATED OFF INTERSTATE 35,

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas — Military and civilian community members spent the day April 22 celebrating Fiesta at Fort Sam Houston with carnival rides, live bands and performances, booths and unit displays, a military ceremony honoring Fiesta, an evening dinner and entertainment in the grounds of Army North's historic Quadrangle and a fireworks show.
