Mather Woods Forest Preserve
Another perk for Springbank of Plainfield residents is Mather Woods Forest Preserve, and it's right across the street! A 67-acre natural area owned by the Plainfield Park District, it contains woods and restored prairie, along with a 1.25-mile wood chip walking trail complete with interpretive signs describing the foliage located along the path. Some say the bike trail at Mather Woods is one of Plainfield's best kept secrets!

Touted as the newest North Shore community in 100 years, the Town of Fort Sheridan is a totally unique residential suburb situated on the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. Fort Sheridan was originally developed as a US Army installation on 640 acres of prime Lake Michigan property in the late 1890s. While the army has moved on, the historic buildings and grounds have been lovingly restored to their original greatness and adapted for 21st century families.

Birdsong on the Prairie at Sunset
Sundown on the prairie at Fort Sheridan Preserve, N IL. You can hear a variety of birds singing in this video including bobolink at the beginning (sounds like R2D2), savannah sparrows (also chip notes, the loud single sounds you hear), common yellowthroat, song sparrow, red-winged blackbird and possibly others. It is still early in the growth season and the grasses and flowers will get much taller later in July and August. A conserved area which is wonderful but in need of some invasive plant management.

Volo Bog and The StickPic
Today I hiked Volo Bog State Natural Area in Lake County, Illinois, filming my solo hike using a gadget called the StickPic which attaches your camera to the tip of your hiking pole allowing you to take still photos and video of yourself. Included in the movie is info on attaching the StickPic and the website address.
