Fort Wadsworth, Statin Island NY
Description Instead of going on a school trip to the zoo, our daughter asked to go to Ft. Wadsworth. She sees it on our way to school in the mornings, and has been asking to go for some time. After hurricane Sandy hit the coast the Visters Center Museum was closed to the public, they where practicing for the re-opening of the Visitor Center Museum later this month. We happened to meet the Park Rangers at the gate to the battlement, what fallowed could only be called magic.
We want to thank all of the nice folks we met that day, every single Park Ranger at Ft. Wadsworth was happy to assist us in having a great day, they also helped me a great deal that day. These folks are dedicated, engaging, welcoming, and the most professional group I have ever met on any tour. Thank you!
Fort Montgomery Rouses Point NY
I got permission to go to an old fort called Fort Montgomery in Rouses Point. Here are the pictures and video from the visit.
Construction of this fort started in 1844 and was not finished until around 1870. The name Montgomery comes from the architect Montgomery C. Meigs who is the person responsible for its design.
Currently the fort is unstable and needs to be shored back up. The current owner has been trying to find ways to shore it up but it is a costly problem.
Disclaimer, exploring old and abandoned buildings can be dangerous and/or illegal. Always get permission to visit a location and always let someone know where you are so if something happens people know where to look for you.

Staten Island () is a borough of New York City, coterminous with Richmond County, in the U.S. state of New York. Located in the southwest portion of the city, the borough is separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. With an estimated population of 479,458 in 2017, Staten Island is the least populated of the boroughs but is the third-largest in land area at 58.5 sq mi (152 km2). The borough also contains the southern-most point in the state, South Point.
The borough was referred to as the Borough of Richmond until 1975. Staten Island has sometimes been called the forgotten borough by inhabitants who feel neglected by the city government.The North Shore—especially the neighborhoods of St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton and Stapleton—is the most urban part of the island; it contains the designated St. George Historic District and the St. Paul's Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, which feature large Victorian houses. The East Shore is home to the 2.5-mile (4 km) F.D.R. Boardwalk, the fourth-longest boardwalk in the world. The South Shore, site of the 17th-century Dutch and French Huguenot settlement, developed rapidly beginning in the 1960s and 1970s and is now mostly suburban in character. The West Shore is the least populated and most industrial part of the island.
Motor traffic can reach the borough from Brooklyn via the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and from New Jersey via the Outerbridge Crossing, Goethals Bridge and Bayonne Bridge. Staten Island has Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus lines and an MTA rapid transit line, the Staten Island Railway, which runs from the ferry terminal at St. George to Tottenville. Staten Island is the only borough that is not connected to the New York City Subway system. The free Staten Island Ferry connects the borough across New York Harbor to Manhattan and is a tourist attraction which provides views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Lower Manhattan.

UNDER The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge - Brooklyn, New York USA
When it opened in 1964, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world's longest suspension span. The ends of the bridge are at historic Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, both of which guarded New York Harbor at the Narrows for over a century. The bridge was named after Giovanni da Verrazano, who, in 1524, was the first European explorer to sail into New York Harbor.
Its monumental 693 foot high towers are 1 5/8 inches farther apart at their tops than at their bases because the 4,260 foot distance between them made it necessary to compensate for the earth's curvature. Each tower weighs 27,000 tons and is held together with three million rivets and one million bolts. Seasonal contractions and expansions of the steel cables cause the double-decked roadway to be 12 feet lower in the summer than in the winter.
Located at the mouth of upper New York Bay, the bridge not only connects Brooklyn with Staten Island but is also a major link in the interstate highway system, providing the shortest route between the middle Atlantic states and Long Island.
In Brooklyn, the bridge connects to the Belt Parkway and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and to the largely residential community of Bay Ridge. On Staten Island, which saw rapid development after the bridge opened in 1964, it joins the Staten Island Expressway, providing access to the many communities in this most rural of the city's five boroughs.

From Gateway to Acadia

A night in the beginning of the fall, two Italian interns at Gateway National Recreation area, the national park in New York City and New Jersey and started their trip to go visit Acadia National Park in Maine.
The trip was long but worth it, the beauty of the park was immediately clear. The goal of the journey was to make networking and share the best practices between parks.
Irene and Francesca: Acadia wait for us!
Francesca: Hi, I am Francesca, I am here at Acadia National Park with Irene and we both intern at Gateway National Recreation Area part of the National Park Service in New York City
Irene: And here in Acadia, in this great park, we had the opportunity to talk about problems and best practices of our parks with the Superintendent and other very capable members of his great staff and also to enjoy the natural resources.
Francesca: And this is something that we were really able to do because National Park Service is really a great system that works in a very good way all over the United States.
Irene: Fra what do you think about waterfalls? Why don’t we go there?
We achieved also to hike the beautiful trails of the park and we obtain to see the incredible places, not only the most famous of the park, thanks to our valuable guide Jonathan Gormley, the Acadia Volunteer coordinator.
Irene: Hi Jonathan!
Jonathan: Hello there!
Irene: What is your favorite place in Acadia or maybe the reason why you love this place so much?
Jonathan: I don’t have any single favorite place in Acadia, there are so many. Sometimes down by the beach, sometimes on the mountain top. Sometimes back in a marsh, when the pitcher plants are blooming or on a foggy day just to hear the pebbles rolling in the surf or the wind rustling through the trees.
Irene: Besides the natural beauty, we also had the opportunity to show the ECOlife video, the educational program about the environment and sustainability that we made this summer at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, NYC to Cynthia Ocel, the Acadia Education Coordinator and talk with her about the typical features of the educational programs of both parks.
I think that what I learn from this experience is how Acadia is connected with its community and the importance of this link for both people and park. There are both benefits and problems associated with having parks in such highly visited areas. Bar Harbor and New York City are such amazing place that it’s very difficult for the parks to define their own identities in a strong way. And in my work in Gateway as communication specialist, to define the identity is the most important issue.

Fort Ontario, Oswego, New York | WPBS Short Flix
Fort Ontario, in Oswego, New York, has been involved, in one way or another, in nearly every war in American history.
The first Fort Ontario was built by the British in1755 to protect their only fur trading village on the Great Lakes from the French, who controlled the fur trade throughout the region.
The Fort was totally destroyed a year later, when the French unsuccessfully attacked, and the British rebuilt it in 1759. During the Revolutionary War, American soldiers burned the fort down, but the British held on. They rebuilt and remained until 1796, 13 years after the American Revolution. The fort was then handed over to the Americans.
The third fort lasted until The War of 1812. The British attacked on May 6, 1814, and were victorious. What remained of the fort was once again rebuilt directly upon the 1759 pentagon-shaped remains.
Later in American hands, the fort was expanded. During World War I, Fort Ontario was the site of the largest Army hospital in the Northeast. And during World War II, it was home to 982 European refugees welcomed to the United States.
Today, Fort Ontario is part of the New York State park system. Visitors can wander through the many buildings and tunnels.
