Fort Wellington NHS, Prescott Canada
The British Army built Fort Wellington in 1813 to defend Prescott (Ontario) after the USA declared war in 1812. Abandoned in 1833, it was rebuilt in 1838 to quell an anti-British rebellion, then transferred to the local militia in 1863.

Hubby and I recently went on a short vacation to a place called Prescott, Ontario here in Canada. We visited the local tourist stops and soaked in a bit of history of the area. It is fascinating how Fort Wellington functioned to protect the waterways that provided a trade route for Canada. Please feel free to pause the video as often as you like to read some of the placards or study the photographs a little more closely. I did this video as a slideshow of photographs so that it could be viewed in condensed time or paused and studied more closely should the viewer wish. Either way it is a great way to preserve the memories of our visit to this place and what we learned there.

Prescott is a town of approximately 4,180 people on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River in Leeds and Grenville United Counties, Ontario, Canada. The Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge, 5 km east of Prescott in Johnstown, connects it with Ogdensburg, New York. The town was founded in the early 19th century by Edward Jessup, a Loyalist soldier during the American Revolution.

Ontario Festivals Visited (ontariofestivalsvisited.ca) videos taken at Fort Wellington National Historic Site, Prescott, Ontario Canada. We were greeted at the Fort's main gates by two guards, who were dressed in period costumes. They welcomed us to Fort Wellington and told us what were about to experience. One of the day's demonstrations was the loading and use the rifles that were used by the soldiers that defended Canada from the Americans. Fort Wellington is one of Canada's National Historic Sites.

2011 08 04 Visit to Ottawa 52 {Day11) Fort Wellington
Fort Wellington National Historic Site is a historic military fortification located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River at Prescott, Ontario. It was originally built in 1813 on land owned by Major Edward Jessup, a prominent Loyalist from Connecticut who was the founder of Prescott in 1784.
Fort Wellington was commissioned by the British government during the War of 1812 to protect the head of the Gallop Rapids in the St. Lawrence River. Prior to the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s, a series of rapids ran downriver from Prescott to Montreal. Shipping of freight and passengers on regular lake ships was impossible through these rapids, and so freight and passengers who travelled downriver to Prescott from Kingston would be forwarded to smaller bateaux which could travel through the rapids. Likewise, freight travelling upriver from Montreal would be unloaded from smaller bateaux and loaded onto larger lake ships for carriage upriver. At the time, the Rideau Canal had not been constructed and the Colony's road network was primitive. The only means of shipping heavy cargo and passengers into the Great Lakes from the lower St. Lawrence was by way of Prescott.
Since Prescott is located only a mile from the town of Ogdensburg, New York, it was especially vulnerable to military action by the United States Army. As a communications hub upon which the rest of the Colony of Upper Canada relied, the town had to be defended.

Ontario Festivals Visited (ontariofestivalsvisited.ca) videos taken at the 2014 Canada Day Celebrations held at both the Village of Bath and at Fort Wellington National Historic Site, Prescott, Ontario, Canada. Both Fort Wellington in Prescott and the Loyalist Village of Bath love to celebrate Canada's birthday. The Village of Bath is especially noted for its celebrations, which include a wonderful parade with lots of music and a festival area with music, food and crafts.
