A Community Called Orange Mound - Feb. 4, 2013
A Community Called Orange Mound, premiering Monday, February 4 at 9:00 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10, is the story of a southeast Memphis neighborhood with a surprising legacy. The broadcast of the 60-minute documentary is sponsored by The New Olivet Baptist Church; Fred L. Davis Insurance Agency; and Tim Thompson, author of The Locker Room.
Established on the grounds of the former Deaderick plantation, Orange Mound was one of the first communities in the United States to be built entirely by and for African Americans. The self-contained community that emerged attracted not only laborers and domestic workers, but also doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and teachers, all of whom were proud to call Orange Mound home.
One of the closest-knit groups in Memphis, the residents of Orange Mound are still intensely loyal to the neighborhood that has been home to many families for generations, said producer Jay Killingsworth. And they all say the same thing: even though they can live elsewhere and have had opportunities to do so, Orange Mound is home and that is where they intend to stay.

Phoenix, Arizona, USA
For me, one of the ultimate American food meals to eat is awesome BBQ - when the meat is smoked perfectly so it slides off the bone, and the flavor is packed full of insane smokiness. My brother in law Derek had already been to Little Miss BBQ, but it was my first time to eat here, and I was so excited.
I arrived a little over an hour early to get in line, but luckily as soon as you pull up you get a number so that you don’t actually have to wait in line the entire time.
Scott and the entire crew at Little Miss BBQ are amazing, and you can immediately feel their passion and their genuine love for what they do and for the people they get to interact with everyday as a result of serving the best BBQ in Phoenix! Scott and his wife have an interesting and amazing grassroots history and start to their BBQ business. They first started making BBQ at home just because they loved doing it. Eventually they started competing in American BBQ competitions. At the beginning things didn’t go so well, but they kept going and perfecting their BBQ recipes and eventually started to win some of the competitions. Eventually they opened Little Miss BBQ, and it’s one of the best BBQ spots you’ll ever eat at.
So after getting the full tour of the restaurant and all the smoked meat, it was about time to open. You line up outside and the actual inside is quite small - most people either takeaway or eat outside.
I wanted to try a little of everything, so we got a giant tray of smoked BBQ meat including pork ribs, pulled pork, turkey, sausage, brisket, and beef ribs, with sides. Total price for the entire tray came to $92.70 - that was a lot of meat!
Thanks to my brother in law Derek for coming out to eat as well. We started with the beef ribs, and those are the best of the best. The meat falls apart and it was so insanely juicy and flavorful. The BBQ brisket will also blow you mind with its massive meaty flavor and juiciness. Finally my other top meat was the sausage, including jalapeno and a mix of meat and bacon.
Lastly, you have to eat your American food bbq feast with their famous pecan pie. And even though I’m not into sweets, a few bites at the end was amazing.
Little Miss BBQ is a phenomenal BBQ restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona. Not only will the quality and taste of the meat blow you away, but the passion of Scott and the entire crew are so genuine and so friendly, and that’s what makes it so good.
Thank you for watching this BBQ video!

Dad and Teenage Daughters Hike 25 Summits
This video is dedicated to our 25 Summit journey which we completed in July 2017.
This journey started with our hike to the top of 'Y' Mountain 4 years ago and ended with North Peak last month. We hiked mountains in Utah, Nevada, and these girls' home state of Arizona. This was a goal that my oldest daughter suggested several years ago after experiencing a few summits, but she wanted to do it before her 18th birthday. Of course I was completely on board with that idea! The goal was not to climb the most difficult or highest mountains, although many of them were very challenging and treacherous in places. The goal was to accomplish something significant together that required a lot of work and sacrifice with some incredible rewards. If you've hiked some mountains, you know what I mean. I say sacrifice because with most of the summer hikes, I was waking them up between 3 and 4am to get an early start on the trail! So many good things came as a result of this time traveling on the road and hiking the trails together. These 141 hours on the trail with these tough, but beautiful girls was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
The Hike Statistics:
Total Miles Hiked: 203
Total Elevation Gain (feet, but not counting the cumulative gains): 75,302
Total Hiking Time (hours): 141
Highest Elevation Peak: 13,063 ft (Wheeler Peak, Nevada)
All photos in this video are from our hikes and the video clips are from drone footage while we were on the summits.
A special thanks goes to the group Mercy River for granting us permission to use their song, Go Climb that Mountain which has special meaning to our family.

You are watching 13 Amazing Items Recovered from the Titanic. Did you know that after the iceberg sank the Titanic, the exact location of the Titanic wreck was unknown for 73 years? It wasn’t until 1985 that the wreck of the Titanic was rediscovered by Robert Ballard. After the Titanic wreck was discovered, many expeditions were sent there and over 5,500 artifacts were recovered from the wreckage. Some the items brought back include a bronze cherub from the grand staircase, a 15-ton section of Titanic’s steel hull, the Titanic band leader’s violin, pocket watches, keys, and much more.

Dolly Parton: Accomplishments, Facts, Music, Quotes, National Park (2009)
Dolly Rebecca Parton (born January 19, 1946) is an American singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, actress, author, business woman, and philanthropist, known primarily for her work in country music. Her career began as a child performer on the radio, then recording a few singles from the age of 13. Relocating to Nashville at age 18 in 1965, her first commercial successes were as a songwriter (her songs during this period were covered by numerous artists, including Bill Phillips and Kitty Wells). She rose to prominence in 1967 as a featured performer on singer Porter Wagoner's weekly syndicated TV program; their first duet single, a cover of Tom Paxton's The Last Thing on My Mind, was a top-ten hit on the country singles chart and led to several successful albums before they ended their partnership in 1974. Moving towards mainstream pop music, her 1977 single Here You Come Again was a success on both the country and pop charts. A string of pop-country hits followed into the mid-1980s, the most successful being her 1981 hit 9 to 5 (from the film of the same name) and her 1983 duet with Kenny Rogers Islands in the Stream, both of which topped the U.S. pop and country singles charts. A pair of albums recorded with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris were among her later successes. In the late 1990s, she returned to classic country/bluegrass with a series of acclaimed recordings. Non-musical ventures include Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, and her efforts on behalf of childhood literacy, particularly her Imagination Library, as well as Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede and Pirates Voyage.
Parton is the most honored female country performer of all time. Achieving 25 RIAA certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards, she has had 25 songs reach No. 1 on the Billboard Country charts, a record for a female artist. She has 41 career top 10 country albums, a record for any artist, and she has 110 career charted singles over the past 40 years. All-inclusive sales of singles, albums, hits collections, and digital downloads during her career have topped 100 million worldwide. She has garnered 8 Grammy Awards, 2 Academy Award nominations, 10 Country Music Association Awards, 7 Academy of Country Music Awards, 3 American Music Awards, and is one of only seven female artists to win the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year Award. Parton has received 46 Grammy nominations, tying her with Beyoncé for the most Grammy nominations for a woman and placing her in eighth place overall.
In 1999, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. She has composed over 3,000 songs, the best known of which include I Will Always Love You (a two-time U.S. country chart-topper for Parton, as well as an international pop hit for Whitney Houston), Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, 9 to 5, and My Tennessee Mountain Home. Parton is also one of the few to have received at least one nomination from the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, Tony Awards, and Emmy Awards.[5][6][7][8]
As an actress, she starred in 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, A Smoky Mountain Christmas, Steel Magnolias, Wild Texas Wind, Gnomeo & Juliet, Straight Talk, Unlikely Angel, Blue Valley Songbird, and Joyful Noise.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain. The border between Tennessee and North Carolina runs northeast to southwest through the centerline of the park. It is the most visited national park in the United States.[3] On its route from Maine to Georgia, the Appalachian Trail also passes through the center of the park. The park was chartered by the United States Congress in 1934 and officially dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940.[4] It encompasses 522,419 acres (816.28 sq mi; 211,415.47 ha; 2,114.15 km2),[1] making it one of the largest protected areas in the eastern United States. The main park entrances are located along U.S. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) at the towns of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Cherokee, North Carolina. It was the first national park whose land and other costs were paid for in part with federal funds; previous parks were funded wholly with state money or private funds.

Rich Mountain John Oliver Cabin.mp4
In 1817, John Oliver was living up in Carter County, TN, which is in the northeast corner of the state. He was working as a collier there, making charcoal for a living. He would travel up into the mountains, chop down trees, cut them into 4 foot lengths, pile them up, bury them with dirt, and light them on fire. A smoldering fire would turn them not into ash, but into charcoal that could be used for forges in the making of iron and by blacksmiths.
John was also raising a young family. He had a wife, Lucrecia Frasier Oliver, known locally as Laurany, and a young daughter, Polly. It was during this time that John decided to strike out on his own - to move to a new place and to begin farming. He and his friend, Joshua Jobe, brought the family from Carter county to what we now know as Cades Cove. Originally he probably had a borrowed wagon, that he used to bring his necessities down to Tuckaleechee cove, which we now call Townsend. He probably had good trails to travel at that time, but there were no roads into Cades Cove. He had to come up and over the mountain that sits behind you, Rich Mountain, by way of an old Cherokee path. It was said that it was so steep goin' up the mules could hardly make it, and it was so steep comin' down you needed hobnails in your britches to keep from slidin' all the way to the bottom. When they reached the crest of the mountain, Laurany got a view that you might get if you drive out by way of Rich Mountain road today. She saw, not a pastoral setting like you see today, but a forested valley, except for the west end, which was largely swamplands. Its said that Laurany didn't want to be anywhere near them swamps, full of their vermin and pestilence. So up to the east end of the cove the Olivers came.
What you see here is not their original cabin however. John built a small lean-to that first year. They came late in the year and so they needed to set something up just to get them through the winter and to begin clearing the land. If you walk up Rich Mountain trail just a short distance you'll see a flat rock sticking out on the right side of the trail. The descendants of the Oliver's believe that this was the front step of the original John Oliver cabin. The cabin we see today was built after John and his family had become well-established members of this growing community.
Laurany said, later on in life, that if it hadn't been for the Cherokee, they would probably never have survived that first winter. Joshua Jobe had left the family as winter settled into the cove. There hadn't been a lot of time to put any food by. The Cherokee, seeming to be aware of that, stopped by leaving presents of dried pumpkin on their porch.
The Olivers were likely illegal settlers. The Olivers say they were here in 1818, and this was still Cherokee land at that time. It wasn't until 1819, when the Calhoun Treaty was signed, that this land became open for settlement. This was not an uncommon practice of land speculators - entice a young family, like the Olivers, to move into an area, which would put pressure on the Cherokee and get them to relinquish their land. When Jobe returned the next spring, Laurany was ready to go back to Carter County. Jobe offered her a milk cow to stay, and so, the Olivers remained in the valley the rest of their lives. They had children who had children. Oliver descendants remained here until 1945.
