The University of Missouri (Mizzou, MU, University of Missouri--Columbia or simply Missouri) is a public research university located in the state of Missouri. In 1839 the university was founded in Columbia, Missouri, as the first public institution of higher education west of the Mississippi River. The largest university in Missouri, MU enrolls 34,255 students[9] in 20 academic colleges in the 2012--13 year. The university is the flagship of the University of Missouri System which maintains campuses in Rolla, Kansas City and St. Louis. MU is one of 34 public universities to be members of the Association of American Universities and the only one in Missouri. There are more than 262,000 MU alumni living worldwide, with almost half continuing to reside in Missouri.[2] The University of Missouri was ranked 97th in the 2013 U.S. News & World Report among the national universities, down seven spots from 2012.
The campus of the University of Missouri is 1,250 acres just south of Downtown Columbia and is maintained as a botanical garden. The historical campus is centered on David R. Francis Quadrangle, a historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a number of buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1908, the world's first school of journalism was founded by Walter Williams as the Missouri School of Journalism.

The city is built upon the forested hills and rolling prairies of Mid-Missouri, near the Missouri River valley, where the Ozark Mountains begin to transform into plains and savanna; limestone forms bluffs and glades while rain carves caves and springs which water the Hinkson, Roche Perche, and Petite Bonne Femme creeks. Surrounding the city, Rock Bridge State Park, Mark Twain National Forest, and Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge form a greenbelt preserving sensitive and rare environments. The first humans were nomadic hunters who entered the area at least twelve-thousand years ago. Later, woodland tribes lived in villages along waterways and built mounds in high places. The Osage and Missouria nations were expelled by the exploration of French traders and the rapid settlement of American pioneers. The latter arrived by the Boone's Lick Trail and hailed from the slave-owning culture of the Upland South, especially Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, giving Boonslick the name Little Dixie during American Civil War. German, Irish, and other European immigrants soon joined. The modern populace is unusually diverse, over eight percent foreign-born. While White and Black remain the largest ethnicities, Asians are now the third-largest group. Today's Columbians are remarkably highly educated and culturally midwestern, though traces of their Southern past remain. The city has been called the Athens of Missouri or a reference to its classic beauty and educational emphasis, but is more commonly called CoMo.

The Columns - Part 1 - Eighth Street -
Looking south down Eighth Street, one can see the columns from the University of Missouri's original administration building. When the building was destroyed by fire on January 9, 1892, the columns were left standing. They are now the predominate feature in the University's historic Francis Quadrangle. In 1846 the second county courthouse was built on the opposite end of the street and architect William Jewell aligned its columns with those at the University. When the courthouse was razed in the early 1900's, public outcry encouraged city leaders to keep the columns intact.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Avenue of the Columns Committee is to create a beautiful, historic walkway from Columns to Columns that incorporates landscaping, trees, brickwork/stonework, and creative lighting that encourages the development of retail and gathering space wherever possible. The effort should focus on the history of Columbia, especially as it relates the to Town/Gown relationship.

Grow the Garden
Pete Millier wants students to stop and smell the roses.
The director of the University of Missouri's landscaping services and botanic garden oversees anything green, red -- and every color in-between -- on every plot of soil on the MU campus.
But his main focus is to engage students in the campus' landscape and hopes to do so by teaching them about horticulture, architecture and history.
The botanic garden partners with academic departments to teach students about the natural world. In addition, Millier has recently placed matrix barcodes on the plant signage that allow visitors to learn about the plants by scanning them with their smartphones. He hopes that with that, he is able to reach out to the increasing student population using smartphones.
Millier, who moved from Fresno, Calif. in 2005, has helped grow the botanic garden by partnering with academic departments, such as Plant Sciences and the College of Engineering to do research on plant life and storm water management in the campus-wide garden.
The University of Missouri campus was established as a botanic garden in 1999, under then Chancellor Richard Wallace as part of the campus beautification project. MU is among a handful of campuses in the nation that has its entire grounds as a botanic garden.
Millier said he was inspired by the university's former botanical garden director Peter Raven to expand the research conducted on the Mizzou Botanic Garden
He said, 'You know Pete, you have the opportunity to have the largest research arm of any botanical garden not just in Missouri, but the United States. You have an entire university here,' I was just tickled, Millier said.
The Jefferson Statue Garden on the Francis Quadrangle, the Stephens pond and the Butterfly Garden are three of Millier's favorite spots on campus.
Every moment students are engaged positively in the campus, is a moment they will take with them when they leave here, Millier said. They are surrounded by incredible beauty from the gardens and the architecture that creates a visceral connection to Mizzou.

Downtown Columbia is an area of approximately one square mile surrounded by the University of Missouri on the south, Stephens College to the east and Columbia College on the north. Lafferre Hall Renovation: Mizzou Engineering breaks ground on renovation
Renovation and repairs for Mizzou Engineering's Thomas and Nell Lafferre Hall went underway in 2014 after Missouri Senate Bill 723 approved bonds for repair or renovation of existing public higher education buildings and facilities, and Missouri House Bill 2021 appropriated $38.5 million dollars for planning, design and construction of strategic renovations to Lafferre Hall.
That November, Missouri’s Board of Public Buildings approved the state’s issuance of $38.5 million for the long awaited and much hoped for Lafferre renovation and repairs with its total pricetag of $44.7 million dollars. In April 2015, a campus groundbreaking ceremony kicked the project off.
