Celebrating 25 Years of the Pinellas Trail
On Saturday, December 5, 2015 officials, volunteers and users of the popular Pinellas Trail gathered at Taylor Park in Largo to celebrate the trail’s silver anniversary. The morning was highlighted by notable speakers and a ribbon cutting on the trail.
It is with great pride and humility I stand before you today and I can say this is the most important project ever built by Pinellas County,” said Fred Marquis, former Pinellas County Administrator, the namesake of the Trail.
Other speakers included Charlie Justice of the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, U.S. Congressman David Jolly, state Senator Jack Latvala, the Trail’s namesake Fred Marquis, Bert Valery and Scott Daniels, president of Pinellas Trails, Inc.
In 1990, the first section of the Pinellas Trail opened in an abandoned CSX railroad right of way connecting Taylor Park to Lake Seminole Park. The passage of the Penny for Pinellas 1-cent local option sales tax spurred its expansion from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. An average of 70,000 people now use the trail each month for bicycling, walking, skating and jogging.

Pinellas Trail Coast-to-Coast Trail Connector Ribbon Cutting
The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail now connects to the first segment of the Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail Connector, which will enable bicyclists to cross the state. The official opening of the new five-mile trail was celebrated on July 20. The project was made possible with funding from the state legislature and support from the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, Governor Rick Scott and numerous partners. The Coast-to-Coast network of trails totals 250 miles in length, starting from the Gulf of Mexico in Pinellas County to the Atlantic Ocean in Brevard County.
The Pinellas Trail stretches 54 miles from Tarpon Springs to St. Petersburg in Pinellas County. Its construction was supported by Penny for Pinellas funds. The trail is enjoyed by citizens and visitors for recreational use and as an alternative mode of transportation. Connecting it with the Coast-to-Coast Connector Trail is part of the county’s strategic goal to provide safe and effective transportation systems to support regional connectivity. Da Crew Takes on Pinellas Trail in the Rain!! Cycling in FLORIDA ????
Quite the cool music video/action video of the 10 miles from St. Petersburg on the Pinellas Trail to Taylor Park in Largo. === The entirety of our bike ride was 21.4 miles because we had to go back!
And we rode around and around!
the entire time it was POURING RAIN even though we're in the city of #sunshineshere #stpete #ilovestpete
It doesn't actually rain here all day a lot. It usually will rain somewhat and then the sun will come out and shine again! Hence the Sunshine City nickname of St. Petersburg.
So come cycle with us. Our entire trip was over an hour -- but we condensed it down to 10 minutes for more fun and added a lot of special effects to more feeling and to tell more what it was like to ride that long in the pouring down rain.
Unfortunately you can't hear us talking because of the sound from my bike (my bad sorry) -- so you miss the chicken noises from E-dog, the loud swearing from Milo and myself, and the happy optimism from the Excellent Super Man.
Thanks for watching! Please subscribe! We're trying to get to 100 subs so we can have a custom YouTube URL.
Stay tuned for another cycling video by DA CREW!!!!!!!!!
