Quina grew up in New York state, near the USA-Canada border. Border security and crossing an international border didn't make a big impression on her, until when she moved to Arizona. There, she saw the contrast of border security at the USA-Mexican border, and the intense border militarization of the southern border of the United States. The security at this border speaks volumes.

You can take these boats out from the Antique Boat museum from Clayton (NY) on the 1000 island lakes. You'll spend a fabulous time criss crossing back and forth between the US and Canada borders.
This was in August 2004 with my Uncle Sandy and his wife Sue on a memorable trip one Sunday afternoon. Look for the tea shop down the street in Clayton selling amazing Blueberry pancakes. Deeeeelish !!

Historical Society Hosts Program on Former Slaves in Lewiston after Civil War
Androscoggin Historical Society will sponsor a program “From Slavery to
Lewiston,” by Candace Kanes, about the lives of former slaves and how they came to live
in Lewiston. The talk takes place on Tuesday, February 28, at 7 p.m. at the Society’s
Davis-Wagg Museum on the third floor of the County Building.
On April 6, 1866, about a dozen former slaves arrived in Lewiston through the
auspices of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, which worked to
find permanent employment for those freed from bondage by the Civil War. They were
the first black residents of Lewiston.
For several years, Candace Kanes, an independent historian and museum
consultant, has been researching former slaves who came to Maine following the 1863
Emancipation Proclamation.
A former newspaper reporter and editor in Ohio and Maine, Kanes holds a
doctorate in American history from the University of New Hampshire. She has taught
history and women’s studies at Bates College, Lewiston-Auburn College, the University
of Southern Maine, the University of New England, and, for many years, at the Maine
College of Art. She was the curator and historian of the Maine Memory Network and
Maine Historical Society for 12 years, where she also curated a number of museum
exhibits.
Her talk will also include information about the Freedmen’s Bureau, its
commissioner, Brig. Gen. Oliver Otis Howard of Leeds, and some of the other former
slaves who were resettled in Maine.
Admission for this program is free, although donations are gratefully accepted.

There are a large number of docked boats this time of year. I'm told it gets much more busy in the summer time. But activity is virtually dead in the winter. I don't mind the lack of activity right now. I can move around in more peace as a result. It helps to get more familiar with places when there aren't a lot of distractions around.

Lots of people in an area can become quite a mind numbing experience. You may find yourself making uncomfortable and unintended eye contact with multiple people you don't know. Maybe some people enjoy doing that, but i don't. As a result, I tend to look around an area less when there are a lot of people around. This causes me to become less familiar with the features of the area. I learn more about the human activity of the area, rather than the area itself.

Now that I have seen all the boats docked, I would be a little curious to watch the activity pick up. It's too cold at 40 degrees for the people around the area right now to go boating. I'm from Wisconsin though, and 40 degrees is like Spring to me.

There are various types of activities that occur in the harbor and it can be seen by the different appearances of the boats. Some of the boats look like they are for leisure, others look like fishing, some are for sailing, while others are for trapping. There are big boats and little boats. Some have large motors, while others may have small motors.

I would venture to guess that none of them use oars. Oars probably create more problems in the dock than they are worth.

I simply walked along a wharf where most of the boats are docked. I parked my car at the library and walked down to the area. It's not a far walk. I've been told that the Border Patrol have probably watched me since that area is popular for crossing illegally into US. A person could walk along the railroad line right into the country.

There is an area out in the water that the boaters want to avoid so they Coast Guard or Border Patrol doesn't give them a hard time. It's a very sensitive area with border crossing and there are occurances several times a week with illegal crossings. Sometimes the tresspassers can get creative with crossing the border. However, some are repeats. Like statistics show 20% of the population are repeat offenders:



I wonder how legalizing marijuana in the state has affected contraband coming into the area. You would think it has reduced.
