Open-Air Preaching at the Freight House Farmers Market
** PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE WATCHING THE VIDEO **
Elder Tyler and Darah Bolkema (and children), Donnie and Jeshonie Johnson, Roy Sandercock, and Tony ministered together at the Freight House Farmers' Market, in Davenport, IA. Grace Fellowship Church faces some opposition every Saturday morning they minister at the famers' market, especially if some of the men open-air preach. On this particular morning, however, the opposition was as intense as the church has seen.
Tony and the team also had multiple contacts with officers from the Davenport Police Department. An officer ordered Tony to stop using amplification. He complied. Tony moved into the parking lot, to an area officers on a previous occasion said was open for free speech activity. Less than a minute after Tony began preaching, he was approached by very hostile representatives of the farmers' market, vendors, and patrons.
The police were called again and soon returned. The officers asked Tony to move to the public sidewalk, which he did. As Tony started preaching from the public sidewalk, he was contacted a third time by officers. The officers advised him to make sure not to block the sidewalk or venture out into the street.
After more than an hour of opposition and being moved from place to place, both Tony and Elder Tyler preached the gospel.
The Bible commands Christians to live by faith and not by sight.
By sight, some might wonder, with all of the opposition and interference, with the concerted efforts to stop the preaching of the gospel, why bother.
By sight, some might wonder, with people mocking the preaching of the gospel, with the loud street noise and no amplification making it difficult for people to hear the preaching, why bother. How effective could this form of ministry, under these circumstances and conditions really be?
By faith, evangelism is about loving God and loving people. By sight, evangelism is about results.
By faith, Tony and Elder Tyler understood that every person God predetermined to hear the gospel heard it.
By faith, they understood that the gospel is, for most people, an aroma of death.
By faith they understood that God's elect may have been numbered among those who heard the preaching--even among those who hated the preaching. God may have saved someone as a result of the preaching of the gospel.
By faith, they understood everything that happened at the famers' market happened as a result of God's providential control--as a result of His sovereign plan. Chance, luck, coincidence, fate, and/or karma has NOTHING to do with what took place.
By faith, they understood that no matter what mild persecution they faced, it was an extremely small price to pay to lift up the name of Jesus Christ to those who are dead in their sin without Him.
