The Pullman Luang Prabang hotel resort in Luang Prabang, Laos, recently opened and we were the first few to provide a comprehensive review. With the mountain backdrop and embedded onto a real rice paddy field, it is certainly a paradise to die for. It is 10 minutes from the city centre and 20-25 mins from the airport.
We have certainly enjoyed the Laos part of our holiday with the Pullman Luang Prabang Hotel Resort.

Luang Prabang, Laos is a UNESCO site with a lot to offer. The Mekong river, the waterfalls, temples, caves and not to mention to friendly people and amazing culture.

NOTE: Jaew Kee Pa - the best dish of the day, literally translates to Chili Poop Fish. However, I don't think there's any poop in the dip, but it mostly consisted of fish eggs. The name however, is true, and it's the dish the owner told us, if you haven't eaten it, YOU haven't been to Luang Prabang yet.
We set off in the morning to have an ultimate one day in Luang Prabang - and it turned out to indeed be one of the best days of our time in the city. Luang Prabang is a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage city, full of culture, natural beauty and delicious food.

Mount Phousi - Right in the heart of Luang Prabang is Mount Phousi, and it’s one of the best places to get an birds eye view of Luang Prabang, especially at sunrise. We headed off at about 6 am. Price - 10,000 LAK ($1.20)
Pho / Khao Soi Wat Sen - One of the ultimate Lao dishes to eat when you’re in Luang Prabang is khao soi, a noodle dish of wonders that’s one of the most soothing breakfast options. Just across the street from Wat Sen, or Wat Sene temple, is a local spot that’s known to serve some of the best khao soi in the city. Khao soi - 20,000 LAK ($2.39)
Saffron Coffee - There’s no better place to drink a cup of coffee in Luang Prabang than Saffron. Not only is their coffee amazing, but they source all local Luang Prabang beans from sustainable sources, normally local families that grow the beans.
Americano large - 20,000 LAK ($2.39)
Sai oua - 5,000 LAK ($0.60) per piece - Not a day goes by in Luang Prabang, Laos, that we didn’t have some sai oua, the Laotian version of an herb sausage. Her version is indeed one of the best I’ve ever had in my life.
Som Tam - Papaya Salad Restaurant - Right in the old heritage center of Luang Prabang old town is this Lao papaya salad restaurant. You’ll find a full menu of different pounded Lao foods, all of which are pretty good. Her green papaya salad was a little on the sweeter side, but her dried meats were phenomenal.
Total price- 155,000 LAK ($18.53)
Soop pak - with cashew tree leaves - Additionally, across the street we found an Aunty who was cooking soop pak, a Lao dish, this time with cashew tree leaves. It was the highlight of the meal.
Wat Xieng Thong - 20,000 LAK ($2.39) - One of the top temples to visit in Luang Prabang is Wat Xieng Thong, one of the most important temples in Laos. It’s well worth a visit, and it’s located at the end of the Luang Prabang peninsula.
Xieng Thong Phonsavahn Restaurant - This was not only the greatest meal of the day, but this was one of the best Lao food meals I had in all of Luang Prabang. It’s a gem of a restaurant, located right along the Mekong river. You’ll find Mekong river fish mixed into salads like koi pa, and a dish called jaew kee pa - a mix of chilies and fish eggs to eat with sticky rice. The owner told us, if you haven’t eaten jaew kee pa, “you haven’t been to Luang Prabang yet.” And he was so right!

Luang Prabang Night Market - One of the top things to do in Luang Prabang as written everywhere is walk around the Luang Prabang night market. I have to say, it’s a great place to walk around, and the shakes are always good.

Is Luang Prabang worth it? You have one day in Luang Prabang, Laos, but where do you begin? Luang Prabang is the perfect introduction to Laos’ rich cultural heritage, and the best itinerary is having no itinerary at all—there is no greater city in the country for simply strolling around with no plan, grabbing fresh fruit and admiring the well-preserved architecture. Awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1995, the city center oozes with European Colonial charm, featuring French-style buildings, clean, quiet streets, and intricate Buddhist temples distinct from neighboring countries. While the trek up the stairs to the city’s famed Mount Phousi is certainly beautiful, be warned—making the ascent in the evening for sunset is annoyingly crowded, if not down-right miserable. Consider an equally beautiful sunset view at one of the Mekong River’s many waterfront restaurants instead. The city may not have enough star attractions to keep tourists occupied for multiple days, but if you’re already heading to Laos, don’t miss this gem. :)

UNESCO recognized Luang Prabang, Laos historical significance in 1995 by naming this former royal capital of the Kingdom of Laos a World Heritage Site. 2nd Luang Prabang Film Festival
The second Luang Prabang Film Festival kicked off on Saturday featuring 25 feature-length films from around South East Asia and is scheduled to run until December 7.
The festival celebrates film-making in Southeast Asia and gives Lao people a chance to see more of what their neighbours are producing in this art form.
The government has backed the project, instituting special measures designed to facilitate film-making activities and investment in the industry. Last year's festival was a great success and organisers hope it will become a permanent institution and encourage more film-making in Laos.
The highlight of the opening was a Lao film titled On Safer Ground by Stuart Ryan and Hedley Dindoyal. The documentary follows a teenage football team from Laos as they travel to the Gothia Youth World Cup 2010 in Sweden.
After the screening the organisers surprised the guests by bringing the entire team, from Xieng Khuang province, onto the stage and a standing ovation followed.
The official opening ceremony was followed by a red carpet party with the appearance of VIP guests including filmmakers, directors and actors along with other figures working in the film scene at the Luang Prabang French Cultural Centre.
Our festival last year was a huge success, so we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to keep this project going, said Mr Gabriel Kuperman, who is the founder and director of the festival.
This year we are proud to be showcasing 25 feature-length films from around Southeast Asia. These movies represent the broad range of skilled filmmaking in the region, and the films were thoughtfully nominated by our Motion Picture Ambassadors, several of whom are with us today.
We have two venues showing the films this year: the handicraft market and also at the beautiful Amantaka just down the road. Lao short films and selections from the National Archive will also be screened at our Visitor Centre - Project Space Luang Prabang, he said.
There, visitors will also find exhibits by UNESCO and the Southeast Asia Movie Theatre Project, as well as images from the Gothia Cup, where much of our opening film, On Safer Ground, is filmed. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see films in restaurants and other businesses around town.
Director of the Cinema Department of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Bounchao Phichit, said The object of the Luang Prabang Film Festival is to develop and promote the growth of the film industry in Laos and to engage in other cultural exchanges with a view to promoting tourism in Laos, particularly in Luang Prabang, which is a World Heritage Site.
The first Luang Prabang Film Festival last year encouraged film activities and promoted many quality Lao films. As a result of its success, young filmmakers are now eager to produce more films.
The festival demonstrates the good working relations between the film industries of South East Asian countries, enables the audience to view a diversity of films, and enables Lao filmmakers to learn from their regional counterparts.
The government of Laos has realised the importance of film activities. The Department of Cinema was established in 2008 to manage the film industry and promote the development of quality Lao films in response to public demand.
Films featured at the festival are At the Horizon, On Safer Ground and Lao Wedding.
Apart from the main festival there will also be a roadshow, which will screen a small selection of films in various provinces. These Lao-subtitled films will be shown over two-night stops.
This travelling festival will provide local communities with an opportunity to interact in an international cultural event, something they rarely have the chance to do given their socio-economic disadvantage and remote locale. This element of the festival will be organised with the support and cooperation of provincial governments and departments of information and culture.
The Luang Prabang Film Festival is organised in partnership with the Department of Cinema, the Lao Journalists' Association and UNESCO Bangkok.

Luang Prabang, literally meaning Royal Buddha Image, is a city in north central Laos, consisting of 58 adjacent villages, of which 33 comprise the UNESCO Town Of Luang Prabang World Heritage Site. It was listed in 1995 for unique and remarkably well preserved architectural, religious and cultural heritage, a blend of the rural and urban developments over several centuries, including the French colonial influences during the 19th and 20th centuries.

France pledges ongoing support to Laos.
France has promised to further strengthen bilateral relations with Laos, including in the fields of agriculture, renewable energy, and tourism as part of efforts to boost sustainable development.
French Ambassador to Laos, Mrs Florence Jeanblanc-Risler, highlighted the strong bilateral relationship along with plans to support the Lao government when she appeared before the media on Tuesday, ahead of the French national day (Bastille Day) which will be celebrated in Vientiane on July 14.
The first priority is to be a partner to Laos’ sustainable development in line with the strategies set by the Lao government and in line with French preferences.
“Our support includes several sectors: agriculture, renewable energy and sustainable tourism,” she said.
“The second priority of our work aims to enhance Laos’ development actors. That means firstly working with youth; secondly, to support the private sector and the emergence of a strong SME network, strongly committed to social and environmental responsibility; and, finally, to support the organisations that structure Lao society,” she said.
The third priority is regional integration as Laos is part of a wider region, she noted, while giving the Mekong River Commission as an example. Health, biodiversity, trade, and investment all have a regional dimension and need regional cooperation.
The ambassador also highlighted the multiple partnerships serving sustainable development in the tourism sector.
For several years, the two countries have successfully cooperated in various sectors such as hydroelectricity, forestry, agriculture, mining and tourism, representing economic opportunities for Laos.
Over the last 10 years, the French government has been assisting various sectors including culture, the economy, civil society, agriculture and rural development, justice and education.
France is a significant investor in Laos through the Nam Theun 2 hydropower project. Électricité de France International’s stake is an excellent example of a substantial hydro-power investment which contributes to the development of Laos in general.
At present, some 72,000 students are learning French in Laos and La Semaine de la Francophonie (Francophonie Week) is celebrated across the country.
Since Laos and France established diplomatic relations on July 31, 1951, friendly relations and close cooperation have continued to flourish, notably in the fields of education and health.
France and Laos also share a language through the use of French, which is still very much alive today.

Luang Prabang is an amazing historical city in Laos, and it also happens to be an amazing city for food. You’ll find an array of incredible Lao food to experience.
Morning Market - One of the best places to get started eating Lao street food in Luang Prabang is the morning market. It’s low-key, relaxing, the vendors are incredibly friendly, and there’s so much delicious food to try. From wild grilled beehive to khao piak sen noodles, the food is so good, it’s hard to ever go anywhere else when you’re in Luang Prabang. The food highlight for me was the grilled honey comb, since it was so rare and unique. Additionally, you’ll have a blast checking out all the ingredient at the market. Here’s what I ate:
Grilled beehive - 5,000 LAK ($0.60)
Mung bean cake - 5,000 LAK ($0.60) for 2
Naem
Khao gee - 5,000 LAK ($0.60) for 3
Noodle rolls - 10,000 LAK ($1.20
Khao piak sen - 15,000 LAK ($1.80) per bowl
Phosi Market - One of the biggest markets in Luang Prabang is Phosi Market. Unfortunately there wasn’t much pre-cooked food when we went there in the middle of the day, but luckily we found some amazing food.
Sai oua - Sai oua is the northern Laos version of sausage, and it’s a life-changer. This stall served some of the best sausage, not only that I’ve had in Laos, but in the world. You’ll find sai oua all over Luang Prabang. Price - 10,000 LAK ($1.20) each
Sticky rice feast - I desperately wanted a Luang Prabang sticky rice meal for lunch, so eventually after walking around a little we found the perfect spot. She had a variety of different Lao food stews to choose from and they all look great. All the dishes were delicious, but the best Lao food of the meal for me was the bowl of aw bon (or bon) - made from taro leaves.
Total price - 40,000 LAK ($4.79)
Finally, for dinner to finish off this Luang Prabang street food tour, we headed to the evening market, located perpendicular to the night market walking street. We ordered a Mekong fish and then some very interesting Lao dishes from the curry stall. The algae salad was particularly interesting and delicious.
Fish - 80,000 LAK ($9.58), farmed fish were considerably cheaper
Dinner total - 60,000 LAK ($7.18)
It was an amazing day exploring Lao street food in Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang is a food paradise.
