Vienna, Austria: Around the Freyung and Minoriten neighborhoods in the historic core
There are may squares in the old city of Vienna. Freyyung is one of the most interesting squares, surrounded by palaces like the Plais Harrach and the Palais Kinsky, in baroque style from the ealy 18th century. The Schottenkirche (Schotten church) and Schottenkloster (Schotten monastery) are also located in the Freyung. The church was rebuilt in baroque style in the mid 17th century.
The Minoritenplatz is one of the oldest squares in Vienna and is dominated by the Minoritenkirche church, after which the square is named. The square is surrounded by imposing baroque palaces like the Palais Lichtenstein, the Palais Niederösterreich and the Palais Starhemberg. Minoritenkirche is a gothic church built in the 14rh century.

The Freyung is a triangular public square, located in centre of Vienna. The square originally lay outside the Roman fortification walls of Vendabona. In the 12th century, Irish monks arrived by invitation of Duke Henry II of Austria to build a monastery. The monastery is called Schottenkloster, meaning Scottish Monastery, as Ireland at that time was known as New Scotland. The square around Schottenkloster was known as bei den Schotten (at the Scots). The name Freyung has its origin from the old German word frey, meaning free.

Wien - Altwiener Christkindlmarkt Freyung
Der Altwiener Christkindlmarkt auf der Freyung in der Innenstadt ist der Tradition verpflichtet. Schon 1772 hat hier ein Christkindlmarkt stattgefunden, heute gibt es dort Handwerkskunst, Glasdekorationen, traditionelle Krippen und Keramik zu kaufen.

Дворец Ферстеля (Palais Ferstel) в центре Вены был спроектирован архитектором Генрихом фон Ферстелем. Одним фасадом выходит на площадь Фрайюнг, другим — на улицу Херренгассе. Donaunixenbrunnen im sechseckigen sogenannten Basarhof der im Palais Ferstel befindlichen Einkaufspassage zwischen der Freyung und der Herrengasse und besitzt eine Gesamthöhe von 19 Wiener Fuß (entspricht 6 Meter) bei einem Beckendurchmesser von 10 Fuß (3,2 Meter).

Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna | Best Christmas Market Vienna Austria
Each Christmas, the forecourt in front of Schönbrunn Palace is turned into a Christmas Market of the better sort. Indeed, the Schönbrunn version ranks among the very best in Vienna, bearing easy comparison with such markets as those on the Rathausplatz, Spittelberg and Freyung.
The palace and its outbuildings form an impressive backdrop which is reflected in the quality of the wares. There are no stalls selling cheap watches or plastic soldiers. Instead, you get products from the workshops of candle makers, glass blowers, wood carvers, potteries, stonemasons and other traditional artists and artisans.
It’s a great place to find traditional Christmas gifts and decorations harking back to a time when plastic was still a twinkle in some chemist’s inventive eye.
