Die Friedrichstraße ist eine der Lebensadern in der historischen Mitte der Hauptstadt. Auf dieser gar nicht mal breiten und mit etwa 3 Kilometern auch nicht langen Straße spiegelt sich auf engstem Raum die Stadt. The Tränenpalast, Checkpoint Charlie, the former entertainment district and shopping are all part of Friedrichstraße in Berlin. But there’s a lot more besides. Friedrichstraße is Berlin’s north-south axis and runs in a straight line through Mitte and Kreuzberg. It is 3.5 kilometres long and one of the city’s most important arterial roads. Today, you can stroll and shop here, visit the famous Checkpoint Charlie border crossing or one of the theatres.
Friedrichstraße is named after Elector Friedrich III, who ruled here from 1688 to 1713. In his day, the road was surrounded only by fields, pastures and farmland – until the royal estates were sold and work started on building Berlin’s suburbs with paved roads.
By the time of the Second World War, with music halls, theatres and the famous Wintergarten variety theatre, Friedrichstraße had become Berlin’s most famous – and notorious – amusement district.
When Berlin was partitioned, the wall cut through Friedrichstraße as well. Today at this exact spot – the Checkpoint Charlie border crossing – there is a replica of the guard house that you can visit. Another crossing point in GDR times was Friedrichstraße station. In the glass pavilion – known as the Tränenpalast, or palace of tears – there is an exhibition on the border crossing.
Building projects after reunification turned the section of Friedrichstraße between the station and Checkpoint Charlie into a popular shopping district. Today, there are many new buildings such as the Friedrichstadtpassagen with designer boutiques, offices and restaurants. Quartier 207 contains the department stores Les Galeries Lafayette with French fashion, lifestyle accessories and a delicatessen department with specialities from France. Designed by the architect Jean Nouvel, it has an impressive transparent glass façade and an atrium that narrows towards the ground. The neighbouring Quartier 206, where you can shop in elegant designer boutiques, is built in the extravagant Art Déco style. The entertainment district is still there, north of the station, where the Friedrichstadt-Palast and Admiralspalast still put on variety shows and spectacular revues. Only a few minutes’ walk away is the Berliner Ensemble – one of the most prominent theatres in Germany, famously established by Bertolt Brecht.

Der Bahnhof Berlin Friedrichstraße ist ein Bahnhof an der Stadtbahn zwischen Friedrichstraße und Spree in Berlin. Unter ihm befinden sich der U-Bahnhof Friedrichstraße und der unterirdische Bahnsteig des S-Bahnhofs.
Der Bahnhof ist Station des Regionalverkehrs und der Berliner S- und U-Bahn. Wegen seiner zentralen Lage im Bezirk und Ortsteil Mitte nahe dem Boulevard Unter den Linden, dem Brandenburger Tor und dem Reichstag ist er ein beliebter Ausgangspunkt für Touristen. Gleichzeitig ist er ein Knotenpunkt für den innerstädtischen Verkehr. Gemessen an der Zahl der Fahrgäste gilt er als wichtigster Bahn-Regionalknoten Berlins.[2]
Die S-Bahn und die Regionalbahn halten oberirdisch an insgesamt drei Bahnsteigen, die von Süden nach Norden als A, B, C bezeichnet werden. Die Bahnsteige liegen auf dem Stadtbahnviadukt und werden von einer größeren (Regionalbahn) und einer kleineren Bahnhofshalle (S-Bahn) überspannt. Unterirdisch kreuzt auf der westlichen Seite (unter dem Reichstagsufer) der Nord-Süd-Tunnel der S-Bahn, an dem der Bahnsteig D liegt, sowie auf der östlichen Seite (unter der Friedrichstraße) ein Bahnhof der U-Bahn-Linie 6. Außerdem wird der Bahnhof durch Bus und Straßenbahn der BVG bedient.
1878 wurde auf einem Grundstück zwischen Friedrichstraße und Spree nach Plänen von Johannes Vollmer mit dem Bau des Bahnhofs begonnen. Der Architekt war gleichzeitig auch mit dem Bau des Bahnhofs Hackescher Markt betraut. Ebenso wie die gesamte vom Ingenieur Ernst Dircksen projektierte Viaduktstrecke wurde der Bahnhof Friedrichstraße auf gemauerten Bögen errichtet, zwischen und unter denen der Zugang zu den Bahnsteigtreppen möglich war. Der Bahnhof besaß zwei Bahnsteige mit je zwei Richtungsgleisen und einer großen tonnenförmigen Bahnsteighalle über Fachwerkbindern unterschiedlicher Spannweite, die die Trassenkrümmung überwölbten. Der Haupteingang befand sich auf der Nordseite, während die Droschken auf dem dreieckigen südlichen Vorplatz hielten. Strecken und Bauwerke wurden am 7. Februar 1882 für die Vorortbahn (spätere S-Bahn) und am 15. Mai desselben Jahres für die Fernbahn eröffnet.
Umbau und Erweiterungen
Da die Station infolge des schnell anwachsenden Verkehrs bereits vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg für den abzuwickelnden Fernverkehr zu klein war, wurde sie ab 1914 unter Betrieb stückweise abgerissen und in erweiterter Form wieder aufgebaut. Dabei wurden die Baukonstruktionen erheblich verstärkt, und die Stadtbahn erhielt vor der Nordseite einen neuen etwas angehobenen Bahnsteig, sodass für die Fernbahn anschließend zwei Richtungsbahnsteige zur Verfügung standen. Die stählerne, seitlich verglaste Doppelhalle entstand zwischen 1919 und 1925 nach Plänen von Carl Theodor Brodführer. Der Bahnhof erhielt auf der Nordseite unter dem Stadtbahnviadukt zwei abgetreppte Eingangsbauten in expressionistischer Formensprache. Die Außenwandflächen der Nordfassade wurden mit dunkel glasierten Klinkern verkleidet, während die Ecken aus gerundeten Formsteinen bestanden. Demgegenüber war die gesamte Südfassade nur verputzt worden, bis sie bei der letzten durchgreifenden Sanierung 1999 ebenfalls verklinkert wurde und über den Eingängen gläserne Vordächer erhielt.
