Durango Mountain Resort at Purgatory. Classic Colorado connection.
January 2015 has been dry in Southwest Colorado, but the snow that did fall last month is keeping the slopes blanketed and groomed. Fresh powder fell to freshen things up and more is on the way heading into the second week of February. Not enough snow for off-piste or tree skiing, but sensational for skiers and riders who love to cruise. Lift lines are non-existent and runs of 1500 vertical on intermediate trails is the norm. Perched about 45 minutes north of Durango, Purgatory might have a menacing moniker, but the terrain is tame. Without freshies to stimulate, it's pretty much an intermediate mountain...but Purgatory's charm and character is recognized as a top family-friendly resort and ranked in the top 10 as an emerging Ski Town in North America. The scenery amidst the rugged San Juan Mountains is spectacular, with plenty of non-skiing activities like snow tubing, dog sledding, ice climbing and more. The town of Durango is known for it's history, with constant events, delightful dining, plenty of watering holes, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum with 19th century Western architecture and design.

Colorado and southern 9 at rotary snowplow park in Breckinridge, Colorado
Part 3 of MrBNSFtrain's Colorado 2013 vacation.
I visited Colorado and Southern 9 the same day I saw the California Zephyr in Glenwood Canyon. We stayed the night in Frisco, Colorado (where I thought the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad was from). We visited the museum park in Frisco, and i asked if there was a railroad depot in town. There wasn't, but they told us about the engine in nearby Breckinridge.
The engine on display was Colorado and Southern 9, a narrow gauge 2-6-0, along with a rotary snowplow and box car.
Everything else is explained in the video.
Music is Across The fluttering Dunes from Yoshi's Wooly World.

A walk through the Clear Creek History Park in Golden, Colorado
Here is a quote from the Golden History Museums' website:
Clear Creek History Park is home to many of the original buildings from the old Pearce Ranch in Golden Gate Canyon (about fifteen miles away as the crow flies). When a housing development threatened the ranch buildings in the early 1990s, the community rallied together to save this piece of Golden's history. Beginning in 1994, the buildings were moved to Golden, log by log, where they were lovingly reconstructed over the course of four years. Clear Creek History Park opened its gates to walk-up visitors in the spring of 1999. Since then, we've invited thousands to take a fresh look at the frontier.
