Classic Western Maryland Railway: #734 Paces Into Frostburg

More classic WMRY! This time we're pacing into the Frostburg MD Depot-and working hard upgrade to do it! And, to think, these locomotives were once considered state-of-the-art! They were!

This portion of the line is actually ex-Cumberland & Pennsylvania (C&P) RR trackage. The train left the original WM line about a mile before the station at a junction known as Switch #9. The original C&P continued northeast from that point, zigzagging down switchbacks to Borden Yard and Mount Savage MD but now abandoned east of Switch #9. The original WMRY, west of Switch #9, is now the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail (aarrrgg!!).

The original C&P, on its way southwest from here, passed through a tunnel beneath Frostburg on its way to Westernport MD, but was abandoned in 1972. The Frostburg Tunnel will be seen in my final edit of the entire excursion. The C&P actually became part of the WM in the 1940s before abandonment.

The Great Allegheny Passage: Deal PA to Frostburg MD

This is a video of the landmarks that you come in counter with on this end of the trail. Half mile past the Deal Trailhead you will come up on the Eastern Continental Divide which marks the highest elevation on the GAP along with the split of the Chesapeak Bay & Gulf of Mexico watersheds. The next is about a mile from that is the Big Savage Tunnel and the overlook on the other side of it. You also come across the Mason-Dixon line (Pennsylvania/Maryland) State line, the Borden tunnel to finally rolling into the Frostburg Depot trailhead. Amazing scenery and views, just wish the Fall foliage would have been nicer out there though. I have edited out the sound because when dad and I were having conversations we were talking about personal things that friends probably wouldn't want their names mentioned online, plus it could give away to more personal info that I don't wanna share online. Western Maryland 2-8-0 #734 Mountain Thunder at Frostbug MD Depot

DAN'S ROCK ROAD

Sunday was frigid! Definitely the coldest weather I have ever rode in. We drove to Frostburg to check out a hill and an epic overlook! The top of the mountain was about 5 degrees, the snow was falling and the wind was howling. Dan's Rock was beautiful. The ride down was super long, about 10 minutes. The first 2.5 miles of the hill was super gravelly and shook our trikes apart. Then it opened up to smooth pavement! We only did one run and left to check out another hill. Stay tuned for more coverage of our road trip to Maryland!

Love, Please Come Home was written by Leon Jackson and released in 1957 by Leon Jackson & Johnny Bryant & The White Oak Mountain Boys. Bill Monroe released his famous version in March 1973. It has been covered by many artists including The Del Mccoury Band, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Old and in the Way, the Reno Brothers and, well, just search it and you'll find it's a well loved bluegrass staple.

MD Snow Storm February 2010 - 21161 Maryland

This was taken by Dave walking from the road to the house. It isn't exactly a great guide of the actual depth of the snow but it will give a better idea. When Dave is out by the road (rt 23) the snow is about 5.5' from where the pavement is under the snow up to the top. 23 is a snow emergency route and even it is down to one lane. They stopped plowing completely for some time because it was too dangerous for even plows to be out.


The trek back to the house is shaky because he is walking through about 4 foot snow. It was up to his waist in most sections. The path we made is actually snow packed 1 -2 feet higher than the pavement.

The thing in the yard by the road he shows (with the big antenna) is actually a weather station owned by the Maryland State Highway Administration. The camera has not been currently active for over a year, although if it does become active you can see it here: just use the drop down menu and goto where it says MD rt 23. You can however see the current weather station data anytime at:

Believe it or not up by the house was shoveled between storms. The entire walkway and in front of the garage. I will post pictures from both storms on this week.
