5 -09-15 Beach Slamming Waves- Kailua Kona, Hawaii

I was going to call it How tourists die in Hawaii but, didn't want to scare people from coming here. This is White Sands Beach Park. Also known as Magic Sands, Tragic Slams and more. Located on Ali'i Dr. Large surf generally takes all the sand away in the winter. Sometimes in the summer too if we get a large enough WSW swell. There are menacing rocks just underneath that sand. Best know how to go over the falls of a wave correctly or you'll be getting to know our local emergency room personnel. By the way, they are very nice at the ER.
This day we had a moderate SSW swell. Most often tourists neglect to watch what's going on before venturing out into the ocean. Even when the lifeguard warns people they still go out and either get injured or need to be rescued.
When the surf is pounding dislocated shoulders neck and back injuries are common here. Lifeguards had to do a few rescues. Sometimes the fire Dept parks at the street just waiting for the next victim.
Myself, I surfed 3 hours elsewhere that day and was on my way home and decided to stop and get some of the action on my GoPro Hero 3+.
The video starts out in the narrow view. Not as sharp as in medium or wide. Also shot in Protune flat at 60fps. 1080p so, watch at the highest setting. Was hoping for it to look better. Maybe next time. Sun was in and out.

Entry Title: Journey to Paradise: Kona (The Big Island)
Entry:
KONA We were up early. The room service breakfast did not arrive. When we called at around 0650 the covering butler sounds like he forgot. He said he'll deliver it in 15 minutes. We told him to forget it. I was really upset about this. We grabbed a bite at Aloha and took some food for lunch later then went straight to the tender. They did not even check our tender ticket. The tender left around 0730. The Thrifty desk at King Kamehameha Hotel was closed and did not open until 0800. We were the first to arrive and the line got so long quickly. When we went to get our car rental we couldn't find it. It turned out to be at another lot. It was not marked properly on their inventory. We left the hotel around 0830. We arrived at South Point one hour and 20 minutes later then drove another 11 miles on South Point Rd to the boat ramp. This road was paved but narrow and further down it turns to one lane. It hasn't been maintained. The ride was bumpy. It's a good thing we drove a Durango. There was a small car that stopped on the side. Maybe the driver was contemplating whether to go through with it. As we continue heading south, we passed a wind farm and the road forks. We took the road towards the left. Fortunately, the lady in the parking gate in the hotel told us to go left. Otherwise we could have followed the jeep in front of us, made a wrong turn and come back. It would have been a waste of time. We drove until we reached the gate. We stopped and asked a local who was at the boat ramp if we were on the right track towards Green Sand Beach. He said yes and he said we can drive all the way to the beach. We tried to drive passed the gate but the sharp, jagged rocks made it feels like the tire will blow up anytime. I was so scared and made DH turned back. I told him we're violating our car rental agreement. We just parked across the boat ramp next to the small tree where there's a picnic table underneath. We hiked for about an hour and there were misleading trails along the way. You really have to do an extensive research if you plan to visit this place. You can easily get lost. I know what the beach looks like from the pictures that I saw. When I saw the rock wall from afar I knew where we were headed. There were a few people who drove their jeep to the beach. We also saw a mom driving a ford explorer with her little girls. (And I can tell DH was already thinking that he could have done it too). When we finally reached the beach, I was liked, This is it!. The green sand beach was so pretty. It's not really green. It's more like an olive color. To go to the beach you have to go down and going down was challenging. I let DH, DS and DD1 climbed down to the beach. I decided to wait at the top with DD2 who is 7yo. DD2 keeps urging me that we go down and she wants to swim in the beach too. I saw people going to the top front of the beach and climbed down from there easily. So I negotiated with her. If she walk, we go down. I told her I'm not carrying her. She agreed. I called DH and motioned to him that we're going down through the top, fronting the beach. So we walked. DH met us there and assisted DD2 down. I found this trail to be easier. While facing down the beach go towards the right where there were natural footholds and climb down from there. The kids had so much fun body surfing here. There were a lot of people swimming and a few people climbing the left side of the rock wall. We stayed for about an hour and started hiking back. It was hot and windy. The wind cooled us a bit. Definitely use sunscreen. You can easily bake in the sun. Bring lots of water and wear good hiking shoes. DH and ...

ISLAND OF INSPIRATION
The island of Hawaii is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined (hence, its nickname, “Big Island”), its sheer size is awe-inspiring. You can travel through all but four of the world’s different climate zones there, ranging from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra. From the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from the lush valleys of the Hamakua Coast to the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach, the island of Hawaii is an unrivaled expression of the power of nature. However you decide to experience the island, it is sure to leave you Inspired!
The sun-drenched Kohala Coast sees an annual average rainfall of only nine inches, so soak in the sun and relax on Mauna Lani’s two sandy beaches, explore the Puako Petroglyphs, indulge at local restaurants or recharge at the spa. You’ll discover cultural treasures on the Kohala Coast, too, such as the remarkable Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, the largest restored heiau in Hawaii.
Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection is a luxury resort on the Big Island of Hawaii which is approximately 23 miles north of the Kona International Airport. It’s a 25-minute leisurely drive to the resort. Our concierge can assist you with your ground transportation.
#Hawaii Island, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, spans 4,028 square miles and is the most southern spot in the United States. There is a rich history and culture on the island with plenty of adventure from the mountain tops to the deep blue sea.
Extensive fitness offerings are fun and approachable for all ages. Indoors and outdoor classes such as beach boot camp and stand-up paddleboard yoga are available to provide variety and challenge you.
Hawaii Vacations - Big Island Ideas
The Big Island is actually named Hawai'i, but everyone calls it the Big Island to avoid confusion with the name of the entire chain of islands. The Big Island is home to the only active volcano, and you can theoretically ski and surf in the same day if the conditions are right. The island is the biggest in Hawai'i in terms of size, and contains a huge contrast of geological landscapes. The Kohala Coast, on the northwestern side, is where you want to stay if you're looking for beautiful beaches and perfect weather. The many luxury resorts located here offer world-class golf courses. Kailua-Kona and Keauhou are areas located more south on the west coast, and these areas are oceanfront on lava rock, with some of the world's best snorkeling and deep-sea fishing. Kailua-Kona is a cute little town. The sleepy and rainy town of Hilo is on the windward (east) side of the island, and only 40 minutes from Volcanoes National Park, where you can hike to see lava flowing into the sea.

Hawaii Luxury Vacation Villa with sophisticated tropical décor and direct beach access!
New! Luxury 2BR, 2 BA ground floor villa with sophisticated tropical décor and direct beach access!
Kolea, located just 30 minutes north of Kona-Kailua at Waikoloa Beach Resort between the Hilton Waikoloa Hotel and the Marriott Waikoloa Beach Hotel, is the most luxurious condo community on the Big Island -- and the only development with direct beach access.
The condo is just a two minute walk to Anaeho'omalu Bay, where water sports await you: snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, kite boarding, glass bottom boat tours, sunset cruises, and of course swimming! A-Bay is a great beach for family fun, with warm sand and gentle waves in a sheltered location that has its own volley ball court and work out equipment for the energetic. For those seeking relaxation, watch a sea turtle take a nap in the sand as the sun sets.
The infinity pool, children's pool with sandy beach and waterfall, and lava hot tub tub are all you need to relax. Walk to Queens Shops for pizza and ice cream or to Kings shops for a latte!
More adventurous? Want to ride the waves? Take a short 10 minute drive up the road to Hapuna Beach State Park and enjoy the best beach on the island. Boogie boards, beach chairs and coolers are on us! All you need is sun screen!
Got a little more time? Take the gang on a drive around the island! Or experience the true diversity of this island -- which in one day may take you to as many distinct climates as you'd experience in a dozen countries! Drive 'upcountry' 30 minutes to Waimea and go horseback riding at Parker Ranch -- 230,000 acres of amazing open space! Then cut over Highway 250 on the north end for Hawi's 'wild west' small town feel and meander through artist studios in search of home-made ice cream, Kona coffee, and shaved ice. Another day, head east to see Hilo's awesome Akaka Falls, rainforest, and botanical gardens! Go stargazing on Mauna Kea -- nearly 14,000 feet above sea level (and the tallest mountain in the world, if you measure from the ocean floor!)
Have an extra day or two? You can not miss the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! If you can swing it, stay a night down at the Volcano House Lodge overlooking the crater! The place is so awesome that you really cannot cover it in a day if you want to go for hikes in the park. Stop at one of the black sand beaches on the way home. There is even a hidden green sand beach if you are really adventurous!
You will be just a one-block walk from fine dining (Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Steak, Seafood, Pizza, Noodles, etc.) and a gourmet market that makes great lunches for day trips. The King's Shops and the Queen's Shops each have free entertainment and family activities, such as ukulele contests and hula lesson. There are even rock concerts -- the Beach Boys were just there this month!
Want bikes? Just ask us. How about golf clubs? We can help! Bike trails and golf courses surround you at Kolea!.
What a deal! What a vacation! Take your family or friends or both! You will have a great time!

World's Top Hotels: Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, Hawaii, USA
Discover Four Seasons Resort Maui at
Find sun-soaked tranquility at an enchanted enclave nestled on the magnificent white-sand crescent of Maui's southwest coast. Enjoy the lush tropical gardens and the dramatic peak of Haleakala as your backdrop. Overlooking the gentle waters of Wailea Beach, with its ever-attentive hotel staff, it epitomizes a classical Hawaiian palace resort.
A stroll through fragrant plumeria trees and art-laden public areas reveals a study in relaxed elegance. Four Seasons Resort Maui hugs the sun-soaked Wailea Beach of Hawaii's second largest island. In the distance, lush valleys carved into mountains reveal the inspiration for Maui's nickname: Valley Isle. Journey through a magnificent reef system -- past green sea turtles -- in an outrigger canoe with the championship paddling team.
From the tranquil waters of Wailea Beach to Hookipa Beach, the windsurfing capital of the world, there's a beach for everyone. Far from it all, yet two minutes from high-end shopping. The Shops at Wailea offer over 70 stores -- from Louis Vuitton to Tiffany. More than a way to capture the idyllic scenery, taking a photo of the eighth hole at Gold Course at Wailea Golf Club may actually improve your game. Of all the complimentary services and amenities, this is perhaps the finest: a passionate, yet unobtrusive staff, with two staff members for every guest. It all starts with a lei greeting upon arrival.
Four Seasons Maui appeals to a wide range of travelers because of the many things to do in and around the Resort and the island itself - including the fine art of doing nothing at all.
