The Kunisaki Peninsula's terrain consists of the 721 meter tall Mount Futago at the center and a series of valleys radiating from it. The region's calm countryside is dotted with dozens of temples and some shrines and was traditionally divided into six areas. The region was therefore collectively known as Rokugo Manzan (Six Towns Full Mountain).

Farm Stay and Temple Lodging at Kunisaki Peninsula, Japan
The Kunisaki Peninsula (国東半島, Kunisaki Hantō) is situated in northern Oita Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea. It has a number of valleys radiating from Mount Futago at its center. Mostly covered by forests and sparsely populated farmlands, the peninsula is dotted with temples of various stature, from the important Futagoji Temple and celebrated Fukiji Temple to less prominent, small and rustic ones.
The Kunisaki Peninsula is characterized by its steep terrain and volcanic soil which is easily permeated by rain water resulting in a very particular sustainable system of agriculture, forestry and water in the oak forests and ponds, which have been designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.
In this episode of Feel Fukuoka`s Kunisaki series, Sam will do stay at a farm house and also try temple lodging. Check out what he experienced during his trip, leave a comment, like and subscribe.

国東 KUNISAKI - Syncretism of Shintoism and Buddhism
Passed on from ancient times in Japan, there exist “Shinto”, which looks up in nature, and “Buddhism” which seeks the way of life as human being.
Back in the old days, in Kunisaki Peninsula which is surrounded by rocks and peaks,, a mountain religion called “Rokugo-Manzan” was born by introducing Buddhism into Usa Hachiman Shinto religion.
Acknowledging their differences, both live together in the land of Kunisaki.
The symbiosis of Nature and Human is still inherited and alive after 1,300years.
We hope you can feel the slice of KUNISAKI and their ancient culture through this 11min video.

Kunisaki Peninsula - Idyllic rural area and home to Rokugomazan, an ancient Buddhist-Shinto culture
The Kunisaki Peninsula is a little-known, idyllic rural area on Kyushu, located in the north-east part of the Oita Prefecture. Right in the middle of the peninsula, there is Mount Futago - the centre of Kunisaki’s Rokugomanzan Buddhist-Shinto culture. Rokugomanzan means “six districts full of mountains” and has been used as a generic name for all the temples in the ‘six districts’ on Kunisaki Peninsula. 2018 marks the 1,300th anniversary of Rokugomanzan, and the celebrations will bring Kunisaki to the fore for the first time in centuries.
The hiking trails at the Kunisaki Peninsula range from all levels, which allows everyone to enjoy the peaceful and natural environment. The concept of the long trail is to educate those about the history of Shugendo as it pertains to the Kunisaki Peninsula and its Rokugomanzan culture. These courses span the mountains allowing for some wonderful discoveries of temples and statues that have been left untouched for hundreds of years. Explore together with Javier this mysterious area.

Oita Prefecture Kunisaki Peninsula , Rokugo Manzan.
There are six villages in the valley leading to the coast from Futagosan, which rises in the middle of the village of the Kunisaki Peninsula, and developed a unique Buddhist culture called Rokugo Manzan.
It is a unique Buddhist culture based on Shinto-Buddhistism, which was created by combining faith in Hachiman, including Tendai sect, Usa-jingu and so on, with mountain faith.

Esoteric temple on the Kunisaki Peninsula called Rokugo Manzan
The temple of Rokugomanzan is actually a place of mountain faith that has been on the Kunisaki Peninsula since ancient times, taking the form of the temple of the Tendai sect from the end of the Nara period to the Heian period. It is believed that as a result of fusing with the Yahata faith to be taken, a unique alpine Buddhist culture of Shinto and Buddha study was formed.

Maybe one of Oita’s best-known temples, Futago-ji, is located in the Kunisaki Peninsula and was built in 718 A.D. by Ninmon. Futagoji is also famous for its two Nio Guardian figures build in hard stone and capable of withstanding whatever mother nature can throw them at.
Right in the middle of the temple ground, you will find its main hall, known as the Gomado Hall. Dedicated to Fudomyoo, a protector of Buddhism, and the Okunoin Hall, it enshrines the thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva.
On a side note, Oita is famous across Japan for its Toriten or Tori tempura, a delicacy that is, as far as we are concerned, much tastier and delicate than karaage. One of the best restaurants offering Toriten in Oita is located just next to the temple : (Futagokawaraza, +81-978-64-6305), check it out!
(Futagokawaraza, +81-978-64-6305). Allez donc y faire un tour !
