2000's: GHS Decades of Care
For GHS, the new Millennium brought change and tremendous growth Michael Riordan became just the fourth president and CEO to lead Greenville Hospital System since 1953 - he was preceded by visionaries Robert Toomey, Jack Skarupa and Frank Pinckney.
In 2004, the Health Sciences South Carolina Collaborative launched with GHS as a founding partner. The Greenville HealthCare Simulation Center debuted in 2005, with the most technologically advanced hands-on training for healthcare workers in the state. Meanwhile, Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas opened, bringing renowned orthopaedic care to the region. The Children's Hospital Outpatient Center was added to the burgeoning Patewood Medical Campus as was Patewood Memorial Hospital - a 72-bed short-stay surgical hospital. In 2008, Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital was closed after 55 years of service and replaced with an 82-bed hospital on the new Greer Medical Campus. The Heart Institute, Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital, Cancer Center and Children's Hospital continued to grow on Greenville Memorial Medical Campus. 2009 marked the dedication of the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail and the start of a 50/50 ownership of Baptist Easley Hospital by GHS and Palmetto Health. Expansion continued in academics with the Master of Nurse Anesthesia program beginning in 2010 and the South Carolina College of Pharmacy adding a third campus at GHS in 2011. Also that year, the Institute for Translational Oncology Research -- ITOR -- opened as an international destination center that develops and delivers innovative personalized cancer therapies.

Greenville (/ˈɡriːnvɪl/; locally /ˈɡriːnvəl/) is the seat of Greenville County in upstate South Carolina, United States. The city's mayor is Knox White, who has served as the mayor of Greenville since December 1995. With a population of 61,397 as of 2013, it is the sixth largest municipality in the state. While having a small city population, its urban population was 400,492 as of 2010, making it the third largest urban area in South Carolina as well as the fastest growing. Greenville is the largest city in the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The MSA had a population of 850,965 in 2013, making it the largest in South Carolina.
Greenville is the largest city in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area. According to GSA Business Market Facts, the CSA had a population of 1,438,550 as of 2013, putting it in the position of largest in the state. The CSA, a 10-county region of northwestern South Carolina, is known as The Upstate. Greenville is located approximately halfway between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina along Interstate 85, and its metropolitan area also includes Interstates 185 and 385.
