ukchon Hanok Village is a Korean traditional village in Seoul with a long history located on the top of a hill between Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace and Jongmyo Royal Shrine. The traditional village is composed of lots of alleys, hanok[1] and is preserved to show a 600-year-old urban environment.
A poll of nearly 2,000 foreign visitors, conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in November 2011, stated that exploring the narrow streets of Bukchon was their fourth favorite activity in Seoul.[3]
According to data by the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, 30,000 people visited the area in 2007. However, after the village was featured in television programmes, such as 1 Night 2 Days and Personal Taste, the number rose to 318,000 in 2010. In 2012 the figure is expected to double to more than 600,000.[4]
A large beautiful hanok has open to the public in 2015, as part of the Seoul Museum of History. It is located in an alley, just on the foot of the hill. Entrance is free, the visit allows to see those traditional housing in 15–20 minutes.
If you want to get to Bukchon Hanok Village it is close to Samcheongdong street and located between the Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. You can get to the Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul by taking the subway to the Anguk Station (Seoul Subway Line 3). Take exit 3 and head to your right. After about 200 meters you will see large information signs that begin the Bukchon Village Walking Tour. In this Hanok Village there is a free walking tour is about 2–3 hours long taking you to multiple destinations will you collect stamps from each of them and at the end you can get a keychain at the end. The village is the home to Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, Seoul Intangible Cultural Heritage Center, Donglim Knot Museum, Gahoe Museum, Han Sangsu Embroidery Museum, Bukchon Asian Art Museum, and Owl Museum. Sll place to you should make sure to visit on your trip to Korea. In Bukchon that has over 600 years of history surrounding it many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. They have very picturesque locations and beautiful architecture that you no longer seen in modern-day society. Overall the villages are amazing locations that everyone should see and enjoy. Many tourists come here for photo opportunities and to immerse themselves in the history that is now surrounded by the modern Korea. You can make a guided tour reservation to help you go around the trail. There are tons if things to do while you are there. Recently in 2018 because of so many tourists visiting the area they have changed the hours of when people may visit from 9-5 Monday-Saturday and Sundays is now closed off to nonresidents.[5] Currently there is an issue with tourists making trouble for the residents that live there; one resident even being yelled at for driving their car on its narrow roads. Residents who live there are not very happy that their resident environment is being taken over by an overwhelming number of tourists taking photos all the time. This village averages about 10,000 visitors a day. Because of the tourists the number of residents fell from over 9000 to 7530; they say the tourists are driving the residents out of the neighborhood.

The traditional village is composed of lots of alleys, hanok and is preserved to show a 600-year-old urban environment. Now it is used as a traditional culture center and hanok restaurant, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of the Joseon Dynasty.
The area of Bukchon, which consists of neighborhoods: Wonseo-dong, Jae-dong, Gye-dong, Gahoe-dong and Insa-dong, was traditionally the residential quarter of high-ranking government officials and nobility during the Joseon Dynasty. It is located north of Cheonggye Stream and Jongno, hence named Bukchon, which means north village. [2]Traditionally, this place was inhabited by nobles, serving in the palace and their families. Later on, due to wars and disasters, the place was occupied by commoners.
A poll of nearly 2,000 foreign visitors, conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in November 2011, stated that exploring the narrow streets of Bukchon was their fourth favorite activity in Seoul.

Special mid-summer evening stroll through 'Baek In-je House' in Bukchon Hanok Village
한 여름 밤 특별한 북촌 한옥 산책 '백인제가옥' 첫 야간 개장
An evening stroll is a great way to explore the city, while avoiding the intense daytime summer heat here in Seoul at the moment. And now you might want to check out Korea's traditional house village Bukchon . For the first time, it'll be open to the public for extended hours.
Lee Jeong-yeon shows us around. Baek In-je Historical House is a hanok, or traditional Korean house, located in Gahoe-dong, central Seoul, overlooking the entire Bukchon Hanok Village.
This is the first and only hanok in the village to be open to the public, and now, visitors can enjoy this unique cultural asset until 8 PM... on Fridays and Saturdays.
We wanted to make it more available for people that want to visit in the evening when it's cooler.
Completed in 1913 by Han Sang-ryong, the house is named after its last owner Baek In-je, and is one of the few remaining large-scale traditional Korean houses in Seoul.
It was designated as a Seoul Cultural Property in the 1970s, and after it was sold to the local government in 2009, it went through a renovation period and opened to the public in 2015.
Baek In-je house distinguishes itself from other hanoks with its non-traditional features, such as glass windows and red bricks, which is why some call it a modern hanok.
Other architectural elements featured in the house include the use of black pine, hallways connecting different quarters of the house, and a two-story structure... all adding up to its cultural and historical value.
My friends and I wanted to stroll around Bukchon Village and saw that this house was open. It's nice to see a hanok lit up like this in the evening.
Now with the extended opening hours, a lit-up view of Baek In-jae Historical House will be available for evening strollers all throughout this month... providing
locals and visitors alike... with one more activity to add to their summer bucket list.

Jongno District (Jongno-gu) is a gu, or district, in central Seoul, South Korea. It takes its name from a major local street, Jongno, which means Bell Street.
Jongno District has been the center of the city for 600 years, since it is where the Joseon dynasty established its capital city. Jongno District is commonly referred to as the face and heart of Korea because of its important roles in the politics, economics, culture, and history as the capital city.[2] Jongno District is home to palaces in which the kings used to reside and work, such as Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace, Changgyeonggung and Unhyeon Palace. The South Korean president's current residence, the Cheongwadae, is also located in Jongno District.[2]
With the historical value and cultural properties, Jongno District attracts visitors' attention. These include the restored Cheonggyecheon stream, the traditional neighborhood of Insa-dong, and the Jongmyo shrine. Art Center Nabi and Gahoe Museum, a relics museum is also located in the district. A number of colleges and universities are located here; these include the main campuses of Sungkyunkwan University and Baehwa Women's College.
Jongno District is also home to Jogyesa, the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
The area is also home to the Gwanghwamun Plaza a public open space on Sejongno[3] and is part of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's plans for environmentally friendly renovation projects such as the Cheonggye Stream and Seoul Plaza.[4] It is also of historical significant as the location for royal administrative buildings and features statues of the Admiral Yi Sun-sin of Joseon Dynasty and King Sejong the Great of Joseon.[5]
Jongno district has been included in capital of Joseon dynasty for 600 years. Hanyang, the capital of Joseon included Jongno district and Jung district. In October, 1394 (the third year of King Taejo’s reign), Taejo Lee Seong-gye moved his capital from Gagyeong to Hanyang. The capital of Goryeo, Gagyeong, had a strong base of traditional forces against Lee Seong-gye. In addition, the topography divination theory says that the new dynasty was unlucky due to its failure, and that it also moved to Hanyang with regard to water transport of rice and military geographical conditions. Following the relocation of the capital city, the Joseon government pushed for the construction of Hanyang, starting with the construction of Jongmyo. The construction of the main palace, Gyeongbok Palace and the separate palace, Changdeok Palace was done. In 1395, it was renamed as Hanyang Department. In 1399(the first year of King Jeongjong’s reign), the capital was moved to Gagyeong for a while because of the Prince’s rebellion but, in 1405(the 5th year of king Taejong’s reign), the capital changed back to Hanyang. The city grew into a large city with about 200,000 people at King Sejong’s time.
