West Lake: Breaking Open
Tim Eitel, Jianlian Guo, Yangping Jin, Shijian Jing, Qing Li,
Kai Schiemenz, David Schnell, Xuhong Yu
Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin
Exhibition: August 1 - 30, 2019
Opening: Thursday, August 1, 2019, 5 - 8pm
In the exhibition West Lake: Breaking Open, which is on view from August 1 until August 31, 2019, for the first time works of Chinese artists are exhibited in the space of the Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin. Five professors of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Jianlian Guo, Qing Li, Shijian Jing, Xuhong Yu and Yangping Jin enter a dialogue with the works of Tim Eitel, Kai Schiemenz and David Schnell.
Space and time, nature, the environment, ecology as well as socio-political topics are examined and emphasized throughout different media used by the artists. In the exhibition space, the works weave a web that is shaped not only by the complex formal language but also by the discourses and transcultural dialogue that has been raised.
The title of the exhibition is a clear reference to the West Lake in Hangzhou, which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in China and furthermore one of the most painted scenes in classical Chinese landscape art. The title could be interpreted as an appeal: Breaking open – a call to think the image of the present in order to simultaneously draft a possible future without forgetting the past.
Take Five: Kristina Schuldt / Galerie Eigen + Art Berlin
With the exhibition series TAKE FIVE, Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin shows five exhibitions of five positions of painting for five weeks. Following shows with works by Tom Anholt, Mirjam Völker, Titus Schade and Ross Chisholm, the final exhibition in the TAKE FIVE series is dedicated to Kristina Schuldt. The show runs until February 10, 2018.
Take Five: Kristina Schuldt, Galerie Eigen + Art Berlin. Opening Reception, January 6, 2018.

Alex Lebus at Galerie Eigen + Art at Art Cologne 2015
Art Cologne’s New Positions section is the fair’s international sponsorship programme for young, innovative artists, supported by the German Federal Government, Koelnmesse – the Fair organizers – and the Bundesverband Deutscher Galerien und Kunsthändler (BVDG). This year’s selection panel had chosen 21 young positions, each of whom was allocated an additional 25 square metre area in the stands of the galleries representing them. One of them is Alex Lebus, a young Berlin-based artist represented by Galerie Eigen + Art (Berlin; Leipzig). At Art Cologne, she chose to show a selection of works that use mirrors as the main material. In this video, Anne Schwanz (Senior Director, Galerie Eigen + Art) provides us with a short introduction to the artist’s work, and Alex Lebus talks about her installation at Art Cologne and her work in general (in German language).

Judith Hopf: Stepping Stairs / KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin
KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin currently presents a solo exhibition with works by the German artist Judith Hopf (born in 1969 in Karlsruhe, Germany). Entitled “Stepping Stairs” it features sculptural works and a new film.
Judith Hopf: Stepping Stairs. Solo exhibition at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin (Germany). Press preview, February 9, 2018.
Press text:
Since the 1990s, Judith Hopf (born 1969 in Karlsruhe, DE) has been developing an independent artistic language that has consistently managed to stake out new ground over the years, be it in the form of sculpture, film, drawing, performance or even stage design. Her works are deeply rooted in the use of everyday materials, like brick, concrete, glass, packaging, and plausible manufacturing processes. They speak of the things, which form and influence us in our everyday lives, while also reacting to what could be described as a contemporary condition. Her works draws references to the effects that developments in economics and technology have had on our bodily and mental composition. For her exhibition at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Hopf will continue her engagement with the materiality of bricks. The masoned brick works succinctly occupy an intermediary position that fluctuates between sculpture and (exhibition) architecture, both dividing and augmenting the exhibition space. These pieces will be contrasted with older bodies of work in KW, including a reworked version of Hopf’s laptop sculptures. Here, the artist makes a humorous reference to the way we interact with computers and the growing tendency to perceive them as part of our bodies. Whereas at the same time we as a species rely on implants and prostheses more than ever before.
Alongside these sculptural works, the exhibition at KW will include a new film as well as an ambitious commission for the facade in KW’s courtyard. In these works, two historic artists have served as immediate sources of inspiration: on one hand the American architect and architectural theorist John Hejduk (1929–2000), on the other the German artist Annette Wehrmann (1961–2010).
An installation of the Serpentine Streamer Texts by Annette Wehrmann alongside an audio recording of her reading of the texts will be presented on the 3rd floor at KW from February 10th until March 11th, 2018.
A comprehensive publication will be produced parallel to the exhibition, which compiles new and already existing texts by Hopf as well as by the central companions of her work.
The exhibition by Judith Hopf at KW is coproduced with SMK (National Gallery of Denmark).

Stella Hamberg: Liebe Hölle (Dear Hell) / Galerie Eigen + Art, Leipzig
Leipzig is just an hour away from Berlin, so it’s great that the Walkabout of the Spinnerei-Galleries in Leipzig (Frühjahrsrundgang 2008 – PDF) opened just a day before the Gallery Weekend in Berlin. And it’s very practical for the collectors. The weather was as nice as the Bratwurst and the beer (fresh from the Black Forest), the crowd was happy and the drivers of the VIP shuttle service looked like Mafiosi. The first gallery at the Spinnerei we visited was Galerie Eigen + Art. Gerd Harry Lybke presented new works by a young German sculptor, Stella Hamberg (born 1975, lives and works in Berlin). The exhibition, entitled “Liebe Hölle” (dear hell), presents sculptures from 2007 and 2008. It shows the larger-than-life bronces “Berserker” and the relief “Sieben Millionen” (seven million). “Again it is all about the connection of the archaic and the contemporary and the relation of man and world.” (Stella Hamberg). Galerie Eigen + Art, Leipzig. Opening, (part of the Rundgang / Walkabout of the Spinnerei-Galleries Leipzig), May 1, 2008.

Berlin Art Week 2019
11—15 SEP 2019
Berlin Art Week is one of the highlights in the year of contemporary art in the German capital and annually takes place in September. For Berlin Art Week the big museums of contemporary art in Berlin, exhibition venues and art societies, two art fairs, private collections and project spaces join forces and present a joint exhibition programme. For almost a full week, the entire city opens up to art enthusiasts from around the globe: with openings, award ceremonies, talks and special events, art tours through the city and the exhibition venues, with urban interventions, open studios and galleries. During these days, visitors experience Berlin as a place for contemporary art, where German and international artists live and work, where art is created, and where current topics in art are being discussed.

David Claerbout at Johnen Galerie, Berlin / Gallery Weekend Berlin 2008
For the Gallery Weekend Berlin, Johnen Gallery Berlin presents two videos by the Belgian artist David Claerbout. The first one, entitled “The Algier’s section of a happy moment” shows a small football pitch on a roof top of the Kasbah of Algier. A group of older spectators watches a few younger Maghrebs who have just interrupted their match while one of them feeds seagulls. This moment was caught from numerous perspectives in hundreds of photographs. The second one, “Long Goodbye” is a movement’s video study. At dusk, a woman steps out of a door onto a back porch. She discovers the camera, smiles and waves goodbye. David Claerbout was born in Kortrijk, Belgium in 1969. He lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. May 4, 2008.
