Galerij Prins Willem V

17th century 'selfies' show at Dutch museum
(7 Oct 2015) LEAD IN:
These days, anybody with a smartphone can snap a selfie in a split second.
Back in the Dutch Golden Age, they were called self-portraits and were the preserve of highly trained artists who thought long and hard about every aspect of the painting.
Now the Mauritshuis museum in the Netherlands is staging an exhibition focusing solely on these 17th century self-portraits, highlighting the similarities and the differences between modern-day snapshots and historic works of art.
STORY-LINE:
The modern obsession with selfies has inspired a new exhibition in The Hague of self portraits.
Seventeenth-century artist Rembrandt van Rijn, is regarded as one of the greatest painters in the history of Western art. He painted about 40 portraits of himself and etched about 32 more.
Emilie Gordenker, the Mauritshuis museum's director says there has never been such an exhibition of Golden Age Dutch self-portraits before and her museum was keen to tie the paintings to the modern-day selfies captured with smartphone cameras and spread via social media.
And, yes, you are allowed to take selfies in the museum.
At the Mauritshuis we like to listen to what's going on in the outside world as it were. We're interested in what our visitors think, what people are thinking about and it was kind of obvious that everybody was taking selfies, we got a lot of questions: 'Can I take a selfie in the museum?' And, by the way, yes you can. And so we thought, actually this is a very interesting link to make because it brings out both the similarities but also, very crucially, the differences between a selfie and a 17th-century self-portrait Gordenker explains.
Ariane van Suchtelen is the exhibition curator.
A lot of artists in the 17th century painted self-portraits, not only as portraits of themselves but also as an example of the beautiful art that they could make. For instance, Rembrandt was very famous for his very virtuoso sketchy way of painting if you would buy a self-portrait by Rembrandt, you would not only have a portrait of this famous artist but also an example of what he could do, what he was famous for - his art.
A less well-known artist, Huygh Pietersz Voskuyl, is the poster boy for the exhibition.
His striking 1638 self-portrait features a classic selfie pose; staring over his right shoulder out of the frame.
It does not take much imagination to picture him gazing into the lens of a smartphone rather than a mirror - which Golden Age artists used to capture their images for self-portraits.
So behind me is this fantastic self-portrait by someone named Voskuyl, he's not a household name, he didn't produce very much. We had this painting in our collection. It normally hangs in the gallery Prince William V, which is part of the Mauritshuis, and we took it down for this show and we realised how phenomenally great it is. And what he does is, you can see that he's looking very hard at himself in a mirror. You can see that very concentrated look at one point. And he brings out all these little details, like his beard or the little embroidery on his shirt, even a kind of fake wood panelled wall behind him, so he's thought very hard about the textures and the things that make him who he is. At the same time, you can see the skill with which he painted this and this will have definitely been a very good advertisement for what he could do, says Gordenker.
The Voskuyl is a good example of the richness that can be found in such an apparently simple picture.
That kind of attention to detail and quality made the self-portraits almost a Golden Age calling card - showcasing the artist and his or her talents to potential clients.

Mauritshuis, The Hague, Netherlands
The Mauritshuis is one of the most important art museums in the Netherlands. While it is most famous for one painting, Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring, it contains many other great works of art, including two other world-famous masterpieces, Anatomy Lesson by Rembrandt and Paul Potter’s Bull. Mauritshuis has 800 paintings, mostly from the Dutch Golden Age along with 50 miniatures, 20 sculptures and various drawings and prints, assembled in what is called the Royal Cabinet of Paintings. It has the highest number of masterpieces per square meter in the Netherlands, including paintings by masterpieces by Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Jacob van Ruisdael, Hans Holbein, and others.
The Mauritshuis is open every day. On Mondays the museum opens at 13:00 instead of 10:00, and on Thursdays it is open in the evening until 20:00. Tip for those who wish to avoid the busiest time: the Mauritshuis is relatively quiet in the afternoons after 15:00 and on Thursday evenings.
