The Galesburg Railroad Museum covers the long and distinguished history that trains and the railroad industry as a whole have in the area since 1854. The museum has a wide verity of exhibits that covers the gamut of both the passenger and freight railroad industries. Galesburg was at one time the location of the world's second largest railroad hump yard, which is where rail cars are split up and then recombined so they can go to their destinations. It also has several types of train cars and a steam engine on display.

The Galesburg Railroad Museum is a railroad museum in Galesburg, Illinois, United States. The Museum is located at 211 South Seminary Street, Galesburg, IL 61401.
Its collection includes CB&Q 4-6-4 3006, a Pullman Meath car, Railway Express RPO Combination Mail & Baggage Car, CB&Q Burlington Route Way Car and a museum building housing a large collection of railroad history in pictures, on paper and items donated to the museum by railroad workers and their families.
Parking is available in the city parking lots on Seminary & Mulberry Streets.

Iowa Pacific Prairie View Dome Car on Amtrak's Carl Sandburg - Galesburg, IL 6/25/16
Over the weekend of June 25-26th was the annual Railroad Days event in Galesburg, Illinois. With many activities going on throughout the city, most of the train-related events could be found at the Galesburg Amtrak station, and the neighboring Galesburg Railroad Museum. Plus, BNSF also had a diesel locomotive on display for people to tour.
While at the station looking at all the Railroad Days happenings, it's also a great excuse to get some train watching in as well. I arrived at the station on Saturday (June 25th) a few minutes before the scheduled stop of Amtrak train #381, the westbound Carl Sandburg service which runs from Chicago to Quincy. I crossed the tracks at a nearby road crossing and set up my camera facing the station as Amtrak approached. Many other railfans were also trackside to watch the train pull in. Pulled by Amtrak P42 #64, the usual Carl Sandburg consist follows, featuring a mix of Amfleet and Horizon passenger cars. On the end, however, was a surprise - Iowa Pacific's Prairie View full-length dome car. This car was on the train as a special charter running round-trip from Chicago to Quincy and back. Prairie View was built in 1955 by the Budd Company, for use on Great Northern's famous Empire Builder passenger train. The car was later used for a time on Amtrak before eventually being sold in the 1990's. Today it's owned by Iowa Pacific Holdings, carrying the reporting mark SLRG (for IP's San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad), and its original Great Northern number, 1394. An interesting note: Amtrak's only dome car Ocean View is a sister to the Prairie View, also built in 1955 and originally carrying number 1391.

Non-stop Action at Galesburg Railroad Days! - 6/25/2016
6/25/2016 - Galesburg Railroad Days is a citywide celebration of the town of Galesburg, Illinois and the history behind it. There is plenty to see and do during these days, but for us railfans, we're here for the trains! After all, it is the Galesburg RAILROAD Days! A whopping 4 BNSF subdivisions meet in Galesburg: The Ottumwa Sub, the Mendota Sub, the Barstow Sub, and, by far the busiest, the Chillicothe Sub! I started the day at the Amtrak station along the Ottumwa/Mendota Sub to see the On Track Display they usually have for railroad days. Gotta say, I'm kinda disappointed. They had almost nothing this year on display. Although, I'm willing to bet that the Nickel Plate Road 765 cancellation played into that so you can't really blame them. After that, it was time for some railfannin' at the station and at the nearby Peck Park/Foamer's Park. Here's what I caught:

INSANE non-stop action on the BNSF at Galesburg, Illinois 4-29-18 Part 2 of 2
Note this is a re-upload as I had to go back and fix some minor typos and a few other things after I originally uploaded it, anyways here is part 2 of a 2 part series. On Sunday April 29th, 2018, me and a buddy of mine went up to Galesburg, Illinois for an all day railfanning outing. From around 7:30 am to about 8:30pm, over 12 hours total. Galesburg is the main hub for least six major BNSF subdivisions. there's the Mendota, Peoria, Brookfield, Ottumwa, Chillicothe and Barstow subdivisions and the massive BNSF Galesburg yard/locomotive facility off of the Brookfield sub. all of which branch out of Galesburg and therefore creating non-stop entertainment of passing freights, yard switchers and 8 daily Amtrak trains. I think you'll agree that's not a bad accuracy for the title. We mostly hung out at the Galesburg Amtrak station and Railroad Museum and also made a run to Peck Park to to see if there was any trains running on the Chillicothe sub and turns out it was mostly dead on this day. despite this I still can't complain! I caught a record 24 trains in the 12 hours that I was there!
Non-stop action, foreign power (a lot of CN for some reason), meets, and several hornshows made for a really awesome day at Galesburg! - Enjoy!

Illinois Adventure #1706 Illinois Railway Museum
Illinois Adventure visits the Illinois Railway Museum. The award winning Illinois Railway Museum (IRM), open from April through October, celebrates railway preservation with electric cars, steam trains, diesel trains, trolley buses and motor buses operating throughout the grounds. This museum was the film location for all of the scenes on the train and at the railroad depot in A League of Their Own. The mission of the Illinois Railway Museum is to demonstrate the vital role railroads have played in the growth of the Chicago area as well as the United States through the preservation and operation of railroad and mass transit rolling stock and the display of related artifacts in a realistic setting. These exhibits provide an interactive, educational experience for visitors of all ages. It has always been a prime desire of the Museum and its membership to display our historic collections to the public-at-large. Throughout IRM's existence, there has been a concerted outreach to the general public to gain recognition, acceptance and support.

Galesburg Railroad Museum was incorporated in 1981. We started at the corner of Seminary and Mulberry Street in our Meath Car as our museum. In 2000 we started a brick fundraiser to build our new building next to the Amtrak Depot. July 2004 we broke ground to building our museum building. March 2007 we moved our Meath Car over next to our building.

Students participating in Explore Galesburg, took community excursions including a bike tour, an arts and culture tour, and a local food systems tour.
During Engage Galesburg: Students, faculty, staff, and local community members joined together engaging in volunteer service with community partners.
