Built within a mountain pass in the Aravalli Hills 10 km. east of Jaipur,[2] Galtaji has been a retreat for Hindu ascetics belonging to vaishnav Ramanuj sect, since the early 15th century.[1] It is said to have been in the occupation of yogis for a long time; Payohari krishnadas, A Ramanuj sadhu (Follower of Ramanuj Sampraday) came to Galta in early 15th century and drove away yogis from the place by his yogic powers.,[3] Galta was north India's first Vaishnav Ramanuj Peeth and became the one of the most important centers of Ramanuj sect. The present temple was built by Diwan Rao Kriparam, a courtier of Sawai Jai Singh II, in the 16th Century. The main temple is the temple of Galtaji, built in pink stone. The temple features a number of pavilions with rounded roofs, carved pillars, and painted walls. The complex is set around a natural spring and waterfalls that create 7 pools, the upper and lower pool are used for bathing by pilgrims.

15 April 2015 - Just before sunset, dozens of rhesus macaque monkeys descend from the mountains to one of the temples at the Galtaji temple complex and pilgrimage site outside of the city of Jaipur, in the state of Rajasthan, in India. It's for this reason that this complex is known as the Monkey Temple.
A tuktuk dropped us off at the base of the mountain, then we hiked up to the Sun Temple and through the pass and into the valley where the temples were located. It was a spectacular site to gradually see the buildings and water tanks of the complex because they are hidden from view while descending to them!

The 'Galta Kund', is the holiest one and is believed to never get dry. A spring of pure natural water flows from the 'Gaumukh', a rock shaped like a cow's head, into the tanks.
Prior to this that is in 16th Century when this temple was built, this Galtaji Kund, which is considered holiest never goes dry, was where the Kings used to bathe and the same water was being collected into another Kund or water Tank below where the Queen and her entrage used to bathe.
Nowdays people come to bathe in the holy water found in these tanks, and then make offerings and pray in the temples especially on Makar Sankranti, and thousands come to bathe every year.
The main temple is the temple of Galtaji, built in pink stone. The temple features a number of pavilions with rounded roofs, carved pillars and painted walls.

Galta is a pretty little pilgrim spot located just beyond Sisodia Rani-ka Bagh on Agra Road at a distance of 10 km. from Jaipur. This is the sacred spot where one sage Galav is supposed to have lived and meditated. As such the place is visited mainly for its temples. Just before you enter Galta, you will come across the aesthetic Balaji ka Mandir. It is a triple-storied building of pink stone, looking more like a palatial haveli (mansion). The Temple of Galtaji, which lies in a picturesque gorge amid low hills, has a huge complex. This one is also built of pink stone, with a profusion of pavilions having rounded roofs. The walls and pillars have exquisite carvings and paintings. The whole complex is so beautiful that it is more of a visual treat than a place for worship. The temple, however, has a large daily attendance.
