Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is a Pleasure pier in Galveston, Texas, United States. Opened in Summer 2012, it has 1 roller coaster, 15 rides, carnival games and souvenir shops.Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is built 1,130 feet over the Gulf of Mexico, where the original Pleasure Pier stood from 1943 until it was destroyed by Hurricane Carla in 1961. More recently, it was the site of the Flagship, an over-the-water hotel built in 1965 that was demolished after Hurricane Ike in 2008. The original Pleasure Pier featured rides, an arcade, an aquarium, concessions, a large ball room, named the Marine Ballroom, and fishing at the end of the pier. Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier had it's soft opening on May 25, 2012.

Drive around Galveston Island on my first video of a Galveston Island Drive. Used my Gopro and filmed a trip around a good portion of Galveston Island including the sea drive on Seawall and along the port on Harborside, the opposite side of the island.
Galveston is an interesting place with colorful history and so much to see. Beautiful homes and corner stores from the early 1900's.
Galveston Island was considered uninhabitable by the indians. Pirates considered Galveston to be a dangerous place that would be safe to hide their treasure.
The military settled the island around 1817 with forts being destroyed every time a major hurricane came through as the island was low laying and had no protection from tidal surges.
Galveston was a popular slave trading destination as well as a growing military post that was disbanded because of the rapid spread of syphilis from the prostitutes in the Silk Stocking District.
Galveston County was formed and was a formidable port, delivering, buying, selling, exporting goods thru ships and train.
The Great Storm of 1900 destroyed 1/3 of Galveston Island killing over 6,000 people with a total population of 37,000. Many left Galveston Island and those who remained managed to raise the island by 8', 17' at the seawall mainly by pumping sand from the
Galveston Bay onto the island. The pictures from the 1900 storm and the reconstruction of the Island is very impressive and can be seen at the Galveston Historic Foundation.

The Strand Galveston Island Tour
Take a peak inside The Strand in Galveston Island. In the 19th century, it was known as the Wall Street of the Southwest. Today, The Strand boasts one of the biggest collections of historic buildings in the United States, and is a favorite destination of tourists from all over the world.

The Trabert family vacation was a success! This video is of my family and I on vacation in Galveston, Texas. We had a blast! There was a lot of activities to do there such as visiting Moody Gardens, deep sea fishing, traveling to Houston to visit NASA's Johnson Space Station, checking out Pleasure Pier, and just relaxing with the family and enjoying our vacation. A wind surfer was nice enough to allow me to film him wind surfing while he was in front of our beach house - which was really cool. Overall, this was a fun and successful trip and I would recommend traveling to Galveston, Texas and enjoy their clean beaches and beautiful weather!

Strange Town: Tremont House - Galveston, TX - (SEASON 2) - REAL STORIES - REAL EVIDENCE
On this episode of Strange Town, we make a return trip to Galveston, TX. This time we are given the extremely rare opportunity to explore the Tremont House, and put our investigative skills to the test.
The Tremont House is an 119-room, Victorian-era style luxury hotel that occupies an entire block on the Strand District. The hotel has undergone 3 iterations - it has faced disrepair, fire, and one of the most disastrous hurricanes Texas has ever experienced. In its most current resurrection the Tremont House occupies the former Leon & H. Blum building - which acted as a mortuary after the great 1900 Hurricane struck the island.
Their are many claims as to what is still roaming within the building. We spent a full night of investigation searching for answers, and what we found will surprise you.

Texas Foundation for the Arts' newest documentary film, Galveston Island will premiere on HoustonPBS Ch. 8 on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 9:30 p.m. In production since mid-2008, the 55-minute program delves into the rich history and essence of the island, and the rebuilding and resiliency of the islanders post-Hurricane Ike. KPRC-TV's Frank Billingsley narrated the program, which was edited at Fast Cut Films in Houston.
When we started the project, our working title was 'What I Like About Galveston,' said producer Kim Lykins. We began filming two weeks prior to Hurricane Ike. After Ike hit, we shifted our focus so we could chronicle the herculean
task of rebuilding the island. 'Galveston Island' captures the history of the island as well, back to its native inhabitants, the pirate Jean Lafitte, the gambling, and of course the island's infamous red light district.
Interviews were conducted on the stage of The Grand 1894 Opera House, which survived both the 1900 storm and Hurricane Ike. The program was designed to be a companion piece for a program HoustonPBS has produced on immigration through the Port of Galveston. Both programs will air on Monday evening October 18. Having grown up in Houston, I was always attracted by the mystique of Galveston Island, said producer Jim Bailey. I have often felt that people in Houston and other parts of Texas didn't really understand the special character of the Island. Making this film was a great opportunity to capture the heart and soul of Galveston. The Galveston Park Board of Trustees, Moody Foundation, Herzstein Charitable Foundation, George P. Mitchell, BP America, the Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund, and the Dr. Leon Bromberg Charitable Trust funded the program.

Walking around The Strand Historic District - Galveston, Texas
The Strand Historic District, also known as the Strand District, in downtown Galveston, Texas (USA), is a National Historic Landmark District of mainly Victorian era buildings that now house restaurants, antique stores, and curio shops. The area is a major tourist attraction for the island city and also plays host to two very popular seasonal festivals. It is widely considered the island's shopping and entertainment center. The district includes properties along the south side of Harborside Drive (Avenue A) and both sides of The Strand (Avenue B) and Mechanic Street (Avenue C) from 20th Street westward to 26th Street.
The street labeled The Strand is actually named Avenue B, which runs parallel to Galveston Bay.
The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976 for its unparalleled collection of commercial Victorian architecture in Texas, and its role as the state's major port in the 19th century.
Today the Strand is generally used to refer to the entire five-block business district between 20th and 25th streets in downtown Galveston, very close to the city's wharf.
