The Galveztown Project - First Light Maritime Society

In the Fall of 2011 the Galveztown will make it's maiden voyage to St. Augustine. The floating museum will commemorate one of Spain's favorite sons Bernardo de Galvez.

The First Light Maritime Society has been working with the Spanish shipbuilding yard, Astilleros Nereo, to help them bring a replica of Galvez's famed flagship to reality.

Lovely recovered old traditional village house with spectacular views to the valley at the back and the sea at the distance at the front. Lots of terrace space and small back very private garden with amazing views. Very quiet village, less than 100 inhabitants, 100% Spanish. The house has been tastefully decorated with old thick stone walls, terracota floors and wooden windows and doors for a very natural feel. Lots of light in every room, open plan living room. The house was renovated 5 years ago; all water supply piping and electrics are new. Sleeps 6 with possibility of 8 (if 2 sleeping in sofa bed in the living room).

Benaque is a small hamlet located 29 kilometres from Malaga (25 min drive) and 9 kilometres from the coast (15 min drive), at an altitude of 240 metres in the region of Axarquia.

Benaque was the birthplace of the poet, novelist and dramatist Salvador Rueda (1857-1933) whose work greatly featured Andalucian themes and to whom a small museum is dedicated in the village.

Benaque nestles in blissful countryside with a quaint, peaceful charm unique to the undiscovered Andalucia, perfect for ramblers, yet is just a short hop away from beachside resorts and the culture of Malaga city.

Benaque, as a hamlet, is administered by Macharaviaya, which is only 1 km away.

Macharaviaya is a historically important and picturesque village. It was well-known far beyond the regional borders for being the home of the noble Galvez family, whose descendant Matías Earl of Galvez had been vice-king of New Spain. Nowadays, Macharaviaya's population is merely a few hundred. The historical center of the village has a preservation order on it. Some Spanish and foreign artists, ceramicists, painters and writers live among the villagers.

In the summer, there is a communal swimming pool in Macharaviaya, entrance is only one euro. The swimming pool is lovely and very peaceful.

Galveston (/ˈɡælvᵻstən/ GAL-viss-tən) is a coastal city located on Galveston Island and Pelican Island in the U.S. state of Texas. The community of 208.3 square miles (539 km2), with its population of 47,762 people (2012 Census estimate), is the county seat and second-largest municipality of Galveston County. It is located within Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area.

Named after Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, Count of Gálvez (born in Macharaviaya, Spain), Galveston's first European settlements on the island were constructed around 1816 by French pirate Louis-Michel Aury to help the fledgling Republic of Mexico fight Spain. The Port of Galveston was established in 1825 by the Congress of Mexico following its successful independence from Spain. The city served as the main port for the Texas Navy during the Texas Revolution, and later served as the capital of the Republic of Texas.

During the 19th century, Galveston became a major U.S. commercial center and one of the largest ports in the United States. It was devastated by the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, whose effects included flooding and a storm surge. The natural disaster on the exposed barrier island is still ranked as the deadliest in United States history, with an estimated death toll of 6,000 to 12,000 people.

Much of Galveston's modern economy is centered in the tourism, health care, shipping, and financial industries. The 84-acre (340,000 m2) University of Texas Medical Branch campus with an enrollment of more than 2,500 students is a major economic force of the city. Galveston is home to six historic districts containing one of the largest and historically significant collections of 19th-century buildings in the United States, with over 60 structures listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
