Places to see in ( Derry - UK )
Derry, also known as Londonderry, is a city on the River Foyle in Northern Ireland. It’s known for the intact 17th-century Derry’s Walls with 7 gates. Within the walls, spired St. Columb’s Cathedral displays artefacts from the 1688–9 Siege of Derry. Near the Peace Bridge, the Tower Museum has city views and historical exhibits. Huge stained-glass windows adorn the neo-Gothic red sandstone Guildhall.
Derry is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name Daire (modern Irish: Doire) meaning oak grove. In 1613, the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I and gained the London prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds. While the city is more usually known colloquially as Derry, Londonderry is also commonly used and remains the legal name.
The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is spanned by two road bridges and one footbridge. The city now covers both banks (Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east). The district administered by Derry City and Strabane District Council contains both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport.
Derry is close to the border with County Donegal, with which it has had a close link for many centuries. The person traditionally seen as the founder of the original Derry is Saint Colmcille, a holy man from Tír Chonaill, the old name for almost all of modern County Donegal, of which the west bank of the Foyle was a part before 1610. In 2013, Derry was the inaugural UK City of Culture, having been awarded the title in 2010.

Join me as I fly with BMI Regional on the first day of their new City of Derry to London Stansted route.
The link to London, abandoned by Ryanair in March 2017, provides a vital economic and cultural link to Derry-Londonderry and Northwest Ireland. As someone with a close connection to Derry and Donegal, I jumped at the chance to fly the route on the opening day.
Obligatory Derry plug:
Derry-Londonderry is probably the most complete example of a walled city anywhere in Europe, and is an essential visit to anyone visiting Northern Ireland or to anyone with an interest in Anglo-Irish history or social justice. It’s a unique and brilliant place and certainly the most compelling city in the whole of Ireland, with the added bonus of its spectacular Donegal hinterland being within spitting distance of the city limits.
Let’s hope the route is a success.
From the BMI Regional press release:
“The route, which is a public service obligation, or PSO, has previously only been operated on a daily basis. The new bmi regional service will be twice daily every day except Saturdays (when there will be one flight each way) and timed to compliment business schedules, making it easy for business travellers to do the round-trip in a day.
Jochen Schnadt, chief commercial officer of bmi regional, commented, “The North West region of Ireland is undergoing a sustained period of economic growth, and has received significant investment in new jobs and growth projects over the past 12 months. It is important for businesses that the region is well connected to the UK capital and bmi regional is proud to be bringing its quality, premium product to this route. Whereas previously business travellers between Derry and London have had to stay overnight in the city, they will now be able to commute there and back in a day, saving both money and time, and hopefully resulting in continued economic growth for the Derry region.”
Northern Ireland’s second city, Derry is an economic, creative and cultural hub. In 2013, it was named the UK City of Culture thanks to its winning combination of rich cultural heritage and vibrant social scene. The only completely walled city in Ireland and the UK, it is a bustling, youthful city with great restaurants, bars, museums and more. It is also the gateway to the wider North West and its spectacular coastline, which is regularly used for big film productions including the latest Star Wars franchise and Game of Thrones.”

Game of Thrones gives Northern Ireland a tourism boost
The week the final season of Game of Thrones premieres, an exhibition opens in Belfast celebrating its costumes, set pieces and Northern Irish filming locations. The chief executive of Tourism Northern Ireland, John McGrillen, says the TV series has driven up the number of visitors coming to the country.
Belfast and Derry, Northern Ireland
On day two, we take a trip to Derry in Northern Ireland. There we tour the city walls and learn about the sectarian divisions in the country. We also visit the beautiful sights of the Giant's Causeway. I hope you enjoy the journey.

Bishops Gate; The City Gate from the Walled City in Derry
Bishops gate in Derry/Londonderry is one of four original gates into the walled city. Today we would list 6 in total, which include - Butcher Gate, Bishop Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Castle Gate, New Gate and The Magazine Gate.
Bishop's Gate was replaced by the present structure in 1789 - which was to mark the first centenary of the closing of the gates by The Apprentice Boys of Derry.
You will see this on any tour of the walls of derry - hence why it is often referred to as the walled city. Derry would also be called the maiden city of Northern Ireland or Northern Ireland's second largest city and the 4th largest in Ireland.
The history that is carried behind these gates found in Derry/Londonderry make the need to see them in real more powerful and it usually astonishes people once they come to the location and stand in front of any of these gates and take in all the history standing in front of them and the beauty they tend to carry as well.
The gate which we visited this time in Derry/Londonderry was Bishops Gate and this present gate was built at the suggestion of Bishop Hervey in 1789 to celebrate the centenary of the siege. The head in the gate that is facing Bishop Street represents the River Boyne crowned by a laurel wreath and the date refers to the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, while the head that is facing outwards is the River Foyle and the date 1689 and the ship breaking the boom recall the relief of the 1689 siege.
Some of the names which are usually given to specific cities and towns tend to refer to a specific story that is carried behind and when it comes to referring to Derry/Londonderry as the Walled City then it is important for people to know about the walls of Derry which are surrounding a specific area there and which then have those different gates which we are talking about and which Bishops Gate is one of them.
Derry/Londonderry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland and these two different names and the fourth largest city in the island of Ireland, bringing to it lots of tourists to come and check what this big city has to offer them. The name Derry came from the old prefix Doire which means oak grove and this was actually the name mostly used until in 1613 when the city was granted the Royal Charter by King James I and gained the London prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds, and that is the reason why you will find some people referring to it as Derry and other calling it Londonderry (
This old Walled City as it is referred to, lies at River Foyle which is spanned by two bridges with the Peace Bridge being the latest one to be built there ( that connect Ebrington Square to the rest of the city centre. The views which one get to see in Derry-Londonderry especially for those by the river that are found there, always make this city different along with the history that it has to offer.
The Bishops Gate and even the rest of those gates found in the city are all from the different touristic attractions that people have to visit when they are staying at Derry. Among those which will stand on the top of our list, we will suggest visiting Austins which was a department store in the Diamond Area of Derry that was established back in 1830 and which is now standing as the world's oldest department store to be ever built. There is also the Guildhall building in Londonderry and the square in front of it where lots of events tend to take place ( Adding to these different suggestions which we have, there is also the famous St. Columb's Cathedral and St. Columb's Park that is also found there ( and the Bishop Street Courthouse.
These are considered the highlights of Derry-Londonderry or which is also known as the Walled City or the Maiden City. Bishops Gate might be from the most important of these attractions because it tells the story of giving this city the name of the Walled City and thus give people the chance to understand the place they are visiting and the things they are going to see there.
Bishops Gate is one of the four gates which are found in the city, so if you are going to visit Derry-Londonderry soon and you are thinking about those places which you are supposed to see in this second largest city of Northern Ireland then checking this gate should be a must along with those other attractions which we have suggested.
It is also a great idea to pass by the rest of those gates if you have the time and if your plan will not be ruined. These will tell much about the city and will bring you through different historical places that you are going to enjoy in this beautiful and old city in Northern Ireland.

The Village of Saintfield County Down - Northern Ireland
When it comes to the villages to explore in Northern Ireland, Saintfield is one of them. Saintfield is a village and civil parish in County Down, which is located about halfway between Belfast and Downpatrick.
Before coming to the point that it became called Saintfield, this village was known as Tawnaghnym and then Taunaghnieve, actually this English translation did not appear and come to use until the 18th century. Saintfield has gone through lots of events throughout the history before it reached the state it is at during the moment.
There are several different destinations that one could visit when it comes to Saintfield in County Down, such as the Rowallane Garden that is situated south of the village, there are also the different old buildings which are located on the main street and which have old stables and courtyards behind them, the Market House and the Hotel could be also seen on the main street but a little bit different since one is a private house and the other turned to an orange hall.
While we were visiting this village in county Down, we have passed by a couple of places which we consider are good attractions for one to check and these include the cafes, the bakeries, as well as the other historical buildings which would tell more about the history of the place. We passed by Saint Cafe and checked the interesting sandwiches and sweet stuff which they offer, we have also been to Saintfield Griddle Home Bakery with their sweet bakeries and stuff, there is also the Rowallane Garden which one will enjoy the green spaces while walking there, and all these come of course in addition to the old buildings and streets which the visitors will check to know more about the history of the place.
In addition to those places and suggestions which we have brought in this video to all those who are considering a trip to Saintfield, there are some other places which they could go to as well, such as Saintfield Library, the Rademon Estate Distillery, Kiltonga Wildlife Reserve ( which is not far away from this town, and lots of other different places which one could find through walking down the city and exploring its streets and old buildings.
When one talks about the villages that are found in Northern Ireland in general, just like the village of Saintfield in County Down, there are some other suggestions for people searching for a place to go to, such as Carnlough fishing village which is located in county Antrim and which is the perfect destination for having a nice time and not just for fishing ( the Portballintrae beach village which is also found in Northern Ireland and is a good hit ( and there are some other ones which people could go to and check according to the whole plan they have in Northern Ireland and the different destinations they are already planning to visit.
Back in the 16th century, Saintfield was part of South Clannaboy that was owned by Sir Con McNeil Oge O'Neil, and this land was granted to Sir James Hamilton afterwards in 1605 who planted English and Scottish settlers in the area. Saintfield was the early 17th century settlement with the first church being built in 1633. Major General Nicholas Price of Hollymount bought the village in 1709 and he was the one who changed its name to Saintfield at the end.
Nicholas Price was the one to take care of Saintfield village until his death and he was also the one who encouraged linen and tradesmen to settle, established a barracks, repaired the parish church and established markets and fairs. Price was also the reason behind the number of corn, flour and flax mills which are found out there in the village and which some of them still exist until today, and also has gained a tradition of textile manufacture through Saintfield yarns.
From that point on, churches were built and the village started to gain its importance that we know all about it at this point and we even recommend it for those who are considering a new place to go to and discover in Northern Ireland.
Have you ever been to the Village of Saintfield in county Down before? You could plan your trip and also visit Banbridge in County Down ( go and check the Tollymore Forest ( and also manage to go to Down County Museum and check what it has to offer you from history (
There is always something to see in the place you are travelling to and visiting, and when it comes to County Down then Saintfield is one of the options to consider along with going to other places which are located around the village or close enough for one to go and check.

Game Of Thrones 10th Door - The Dark Horse Bar, Belfast
Game Of Thrones Door S6 Ep9 - The Dark Horse Bar, Belfast Commercial Court, Northern Ireland.
If you decide to book a Northern Ireland vacation, don't forget to add the Game of Thrones Doors tour to your list. Check out the Game of Thrones map and find many filming locations and sets around the country ( To celebrate the filming and release of the HBO Game of Thrones series specially carved doors with scenes from different episodes were designed and created. With each episode a new door was released and this was the final door in Belfast. Pop into The Dark Horse in Commercial Court for a drink, some food and most importantly to get a real Game of Thrones experience.
We have all been thrilled with the Game of Thrones movie series and were even astonished with the locations and decorations which appeared inside. Being lucky enough, these locations where in Northern Ireland and thus lots of tourists now - who also happen to be addicts of Game of Thrones movie - reach Northern Ireland and start asking about where are the filming locations of the movie and whether it is easy to reach them and see the whole thing in reality or not.
Even though there are other countries taking part in the filming of Game of Thrones, Northern Ireland will also stand at the top because almost all the locations where in it. The main head quarters for the production is at the Paint Hall studio in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where most of the interior sets are located and that comes in addition to most of the on-shooting locations which also took place in Belfast city, such as in the Black Castle. Since most of the scenes in the movie are taken in Belfast then it means that most of the scenes are also taken in county Antrim and county Down - since Northern Ireland is divided into six counties - but there are also those taken in county Derry and county Armagh.
In the Game of Thrones movie series, there were several doors taking place during the scenes and these doors happen to be in Northern Ireland and also managed to attract several tourists to them. These doors which mostly appeared in season 9 are scattered among several cafes, pubs, and inns in Northern Ireland which are now displayed for the visitors to check them. Each one of these several doors is usually found near an iconic filming location, so always know that whenever you come across a specific door, you are in the territory of Game of Thrones movie.
The first door of these is found in the Cuan guest inn in Strangford, the second is in Fiddler's Green Bar and B&B in Portaferry, the third door is found in Percy French Restaurant in the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle, the fourth door of Game of Thrones is found in Blakes of the Hollow Pub in Enniskillen, the fifith door is in Frank's (Owens) Bar in Limavady, the sixth door is in the Fullerton Arms in Ballintoy, the seventh door is in Gracehill House near Ballymoney, the eight door is in Mary McBrides Bar in Cushendun, the ninth door is found in Ballygally Castle Hotel, the tenth and last door which is the one we have visited to bring this video out to you is in the Dark House Belfast, County Antrim.
The way these wooden doors are carved is the reason why people who know that they are found in real places and displayed for the public always consider visiting these places whenever they are in the same country - and there are even those who are crazy about the movie that they decided to visit Northern Ireland for the main purpose of checking the locations where anything related to the movie is found.
A lot of those who visit the Dark Horse Bar only do that in order to check the door number 10 which took a huge part of the Game of Thrones movie series and even though this might be considered not so good for a cafe or restaurant but those working there are always helpful and will even take you straight to the door while at the same time being nice to take pictures of you if you asked any of them to.
The Dark Horse Bar in Belfast is a good place to visit and try if you will be already checking one of the ten doors found in Northern Ireland, so you could see the door and at the same time enjoy having lunch or dinner by sitting on a view by that door.
It is not just about the doors but since you are in Northern Ireland, you could still get the chance to see more of the locations where the film was taken ( and get introduced to the doors which we have managed to visit the locations that carry some of them (
If you have been to any of the locations related to the Game of Thrones movie in Northern Ireland then share your experience along with us, if not then watch our channel.
