Del I: Hur de hittades
De unika fynden av två vikingatida båtgravar väckte sensation i juni. Men det var redan under hösten 2018 som vi började misstänka vad som dolde sig under jorden ute vid prästgården. Då grävde vi fram en medeltida brunn och en källare från tidig modern tid, men under de yngre lagren syntes rester av vad som skulle visa sig vara båtgravarna.
Nu backar vi bandet och förflyttar oss tillbaka till maj 2019 och låter arkeolog Anton Seiler berätta mer om platsen, förutsättningarna för undersökningen och vad en båtgrav egentligen är.
Under hösten lägger vi ut blogginlägg så du kan följa sommarens grävarbete vecka för vecka. I nästa film kommer du att se vad det var som hittades redan den första veckan…
Historic Uppsala and Gamla Uppsala - Uppsala, Sweden
Uppsala was originally located at what is now called Gamla Uppsala, or Old Uppsala. It was home to the early Swedish kings of the Yngling dynasty and site of the Thing of All Swedes, (thing: general governing assembly) until the Middle Ages.
Once the main pagan center of Sweden, Uppsala was transformed into the Christian center of the country. Over time, though, the population shifted to nearby Ostra Aros, and when the cathedral at Gamla Uppsala burned down in 1202, the new Uppsala Cathedral was built in Ostra Aros, today's Uppsala.
The cathedral was inaugurated in 1434. Uppsala University was founded nearby a few decades later, putting Uppsala at both the religious and educational heart of Sweden

Swedish Pagan Vårblot (Ostara/Eostre) at Gamla Uppsala
This blot was held at the ancient pagan burial mounds of Uppsala and was organised by Samfundet Forn Sed Sverige.
The procession carried effigies of the gods Freyr and Freyja then placed them behind the mounds where a Godi named Per conducted a ritual with other Asatru participants.

Orion? and the ancient mounds of Gamla Uppsala, Sweden. They sure look like mounds found in the United States. The three main mounds together look like like other sites that depict Orion's belt. Google Street View.
The ‘Royal Mounds’ consist of three massive hills measuring between 9 and 10 meters (29 and 32 feet) high. According to some, these mounds belonged to the gods worshipped at the temple of Gamla Uppsala – Thor, Odin and Freyr.
In the Ynglinga Saga, the kings Aun, Egil and Adils were buried in Gamla Uppsala. As the kings were thought to have been buried in these mounds, they came to be known as a ‘Royal’ place.
In 1847, the East Mound, which is the largest of the three mounds, was excavated. This was followed by the excavation of the West Mound in 1874. The Middle Mound, though partially investigated, has never been excavated. The results of the excavations proved that the mounds were man-made, and contained human burials, though the identities of those buried in the mounds have never been firmly established.

In Oktober 2013 revealed Swedish archeologist that they had found a 900 metre long wooden pillar column near the royal burial ground. In February 2014 showed the oldest samples from the woden pillars that the oldest ones was 2800 years old. So the wooden pillars was erected and in use during a time period of atleast 1400 years.
Experts believe the pillars would have been atleast around 7-8 m high and each pillar was supported with 1,5 ton stone.
Also a smaller wodden collumn of over 500 meters long has been found south of this collumn but hasent yet been totaly excavated.
The colonnades were found near a famous burial site where the three Iron Age kings Aun, Egil and Adils are believed to be buried.
In Ynglinga saga, Odin is considered the 2nd Mythological king of Sweden, succeeding Gylfi and was succeeded by Njörðr.

In Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum, Adam of Bremen provides a description of the temple in Uppsala. Adam records that a very famous temple called Ubsola exists in a town close to Sigtuna. Adam details that the temple is adorned with gold and that the people there worship statues of three specific gods that sit on a triple throne. Thor, whom Adam refers to as the mightiest, sits in the central throne, while Wodan (Odin) and Fricco (Freyr) are seated on the thrones to the sides of him.
In The Roman historian Tacitus's late first-century work Germania, Tacitus refers to the god Odin as Mercury, Thor as Hercules, and the god Týr as Mars. In Thor's case, the identification with the god Hercules is likely at least in part due to similarities between Thor's hammer and Hercules' club. In his Annals, Tacitus again refers to the veneration of Hercules by the Germanic peoples; he records a wood beyond the river Weser (in what is now northwestern Germany) as dedicated to him.
So if we asume that the largest pillar column are dedicated Thor who were the main god in Uppsala, the largest pillar columns real name would be the Pillars of Hercules.
Its the largest excavation ever made in Uppsala.
