During summer there are lots of things to see and do. Experience the world heritage while on a guided tour, visit our Open-Air museum, eat dinner at one of the restaurants, buy local handicrafts in one of the stores. Gammelstad Church Town (Swedish: Gammelstads kyrkstad) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in Gammelstaden near the city of Luleå, Sweden, at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia. It is the best preserved example of a type of town that was once widespread throughout northern Scandinavia. As Church Village of Gammelstad, Luleå, it was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1996.
The town is located about 10 kilometers upstreams Lule River. At its centre is the 15th-century Nederluleå Church surrounded by 424 wood-built houses. The houses were only used on Sundays and during religious festivals to accommodate worshippers from the surrounding countryside who could not return home the same day because of the distance and difficult travelling conditions.

The church town of Gammelstad in Lulea is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because the north of Sweden is so sparsely populated and most people lived in isolated farmhouses, small towns were constructed around parish churches where farmers could stay for a night or two before attending church, as the church was often located far from their homes. As the modern town grew up a few kilometres away, the original wooden church town still exists in an almost perfect state of preservation. Let's have a closer look!

The Avid Cruiser visits Gammelstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that represents the best-preserved example of a church village. Villages like Gammelstad were once found throughout northern Scandinavia. The 424 wooden houses that radiate from the early 15th-century stone church, were used only on Sundays and at religious festivals to house worshippers from the surrounding countryside who lived too far away from home to return on the same day. Live Cooking at Kaptensgarden in Gammelstad, Lulea - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
The Kaptensgarden lies in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Gammelstad Church Town. At a first glance, nothing indicates that behind the entrance is one of the most renowned restaurants of Sweden. At a closer look, we see plaques from the White Guide, Scandinavia’s premier, and authoritative dining guide on the wall, which recommend Kaptensgarden since several years.
The name Kaptensgården originates from the previous owners of the house. He served in the army in the Second World War. After his retirement, he was a captain and so his wife called the house Kaptensgarden, the mansion of the captain.
Johan Thingvall, the current owner used to work in Stockholm in various restaurants. He has always been close to nature. The woods of Sweden are his passion. Here he likes to go fishing and hunting together with his dogs.
When the captain died, his widow offered the house on the Swedish eBay. Johan found it and purchased it in 2003.
Kaptensgarden can accommodate up to 110 guests. However, the huge dining room can be divided into smaller units of 6 or more. Kaptensgarden usually only opens for booked groups.
Since January 2016, the Kaptensgarden offers live cooking experiences on special days, the only chance to eat without a group in the restaurant. However, you should reserve in advance. For the live cooking, one has built a small kitchen at the center of the dining hall, with a dining table for the attendees in front of it.
The head chef Johan and chef Evelina prepare the food in front of our eyes. They explain the different dishes and the menu. Johan creates his menus primarily with ingredients from the waters, forests, and farms from Norrbotten.
In between, Johan tells us stories of its hunting trips. Sometimes he travels 400 km to the north for days, stays in the tent and roams through the woods to shoot willow grouse. He is already very lucky if it can chase 10 pieces. He brought some, especially for us. The raw heart is then served with egg yellow. Johan certainly meant it well and it also tasted excellent, nevertheless, it took us a little effort to eat it.
As a welcome drink, he serves us a drink with apples from his neighbor and a dash of lemon and cinnamon.

Das Kaptensgarden liegt inmitten des Weltkulturerbes Kirchdorf Gammelstad. Auf den ersten Blick deutet nichts darauf hin, dass sich hinter der Eingangstür eines der renommiertesten Restaurants Schwedens befindet. Bei genauerem Hinsehen entdeckt man die Plaketten, die dokumentieren, dass das Kaptensgarden von White Guide, Skandinaviens erstklassigem und autorisierten Gastgeberführer, seit mehreren Jahren empfohlen wird.
Der Name Kaptensgården stammt noch von den vorherigen Besitzern des Hauses. Der ursprüngliche Besitzer war im zweiten Weltkrieg in der Armee. Nach seinem Ruhestand war er Kapitän und so nannte seine Frau das Haus Kaptensgarden, das Herrenhaus des Kapitäns.
Johan Thingvall, der jetzige Besitzer arbeitete zunächst in Stockholm in verschiedenen Restaurants. Er war schon immer sehr naturverbunden. Seine Leidenschaft sind die Wälder Schwedens, wo er gerne mit seinen Hunden zusammen zum Fischen und Jagen geht.
Als der Kaptän starb bot seine Witwe das Haus im Schwedischen Ebay an. Johan sah es und und erwarb es 2003.
Kaptensgarden bietet Platz für insgesamt 110 Gäste. Der Speisesaal lässt sich jedoch in kleinere Einheiten ab 6 Personen teilen. Normalerweise ist Kaptensgarden nur für gebuchte Gruppen geöffnet.
Seit Januar 2016 wird an bestimmten Tagen Live-Cooking angeboten, die einzige Chance ohne Gruppe im Restaurant zu essen. Jedoch sollte man vorher reservieren. Für das Live-Cooking wurde eine separate kleine Küche im Zentrum eingerichtet. Direkt davor befindet sich auch der Esstisch für die Teilnehmer.
Johan und Evelina bereiten der Speisen vor unseren Augen zu. Sie erläutern die einzelnen Gerichte und das Menü. Johan kreiert seine Gerichten überwiegend mit Zutaten aus den Gewässern, Wäldern und Bauernhöfen aus Norrbotten.
Zwischendurch erzählt Johan Geschichten von seinen Jagdausflügen.
Manchmal fährt er tagelang 400 km in den Norden, übernachtet im Zelt und streift durch die Wälder um Mohrschneehühner zu schießen. Wenn er 10 Stück jagen kann hat er schon großes Glück. Uns hat er welche mitgebracht. Serviert wird dann das rohe Herz mit einem Ei. Johan hat es sicherlich gut gemeint und es hat auch exzellent geschmeckt, dennoch hat es uns eine gewisse Überwindung gekostet es zu essen.
Als Willkommenstrunk reicht er uns ein Apfelgetränk mit einem Schuss Zitrone und Zimt. Die Äpfel stammen aus dem Garten seines Nachbar.

Friends and Fatbikes in Lulea - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
During our stay in Northern Europe, we visited a travel blogger conference in Stockholm. On this occasion, Visit Lulea and Swedish Lapland organized a multi-day excursion to the north of Sweden, to Lulea. Lulea is approx. 110 km south of the northern polar circle at the muzzle of the Lule to the Gulf of Bothnia. The municipality of Lulea has about 78,000 inhabitants.
After a short tour around Lulea and the check-in at the Clarion Hotel Sense, we should strengthen ourselves with some food. The Friends Fika and Food restaurant lies in the pedestrian zone and has its own bakery. A nice place for a coffee or a lunch break during shopping or a stroll through the city.
Here we have the chance to learn more about the members of our travel group and the travel guides for this day, Fredrik and Camilla.
After we have chosen our meal, we intensify the information exchange. Fredrik, one of the travel guides, sits at our table. He tells us about the Swedes and that at least half of the Swedes have a boat to explore the skerries or the archipelago. We then reply: the other half has a camping bus or caravan. Laughing, he agreed. Later he tells us that he also runs a lodge, the Aurora Safari Camp. He got the idea during his travels in Africa.
After the meal, which by the way tasted very good, we go to Ouroboros Lulea. They offer tours and bikes. But these are no ordinary bicycles but Fatbikes. Fatbikes are bicycles with a light frame and extra wide tires. Eric Schlemme and Susanne Törnlind, the two owners, expect us already.
After a short introduction, one adjusts the seats individually in the height and we are ready to go. Olov, a savvy cyclist, as well as Eric and Susanne accompany us. First, we ride on a trail through a park to get the right feeling for the fat bikes. After a short time, we we arrive at the skatepark where Olov shows us a few of his tricks.
In the further course, we pass by the steelworks in Lulea and get a little idea of the importance of the steel industry and ore mining in Sweden.

Während unseres Aufenthalts in Nord Europa besuchten wir eine Travel Blogger Konferenz in Stockholm. In deren Rahmen organisierte Visit Lulea und Swedish Lapland einen mehrtägigen Ausflug in den Norden Schwedens, nach Lulea.
Lulea liegt ca. 110 km südlich des nördlichen Polarkreises an der Mündung des Lule in den Bottnischen Meerbusen. Die Gemeinde Lulea umfasst ca. 78.000 Einwohner.
Nach einer kurzen Rundfahrt durch den Ort und dem Check in im Clarion Hotel Sense sollen wir uns erst einmal stärken. Das Restaurant Friends Fika and Food liegt direkt in der Fußgängerzone und hat auch eigene Bäckerei. Es ist der ideale Ort für eine Kaffeepause oder ein Mittagessen während der Einkäufe oder einem Spaziergang durch die Stadt.
Hier können wir die Mitglieder unserer Reisegruppe und die Reiseführer, Fredrik und Camilla, die uns hier vor Ort begleiten werden, besser kennenlernen.
Nachdem wir ein Essen gewählt haben, wird der Informationsaustausch intensiviert. Mit am Tisch sitzt Fredrik, einer der Reiseführer. Er erzählt uns von den Schweden und dass mindestens die Hälfte der Schweden ein Boot besitzt um die Schären oder die Archipele zu erkunden. Darauf antworten wir: die andere Hälfte besitzt dann einen Campingbus oder Wohnwagen. Lachend stimmte er uns zu. Später erzählt er uns, dass er auch eine Lodge betreibt, das Aurora Safari Camp. Die Idee hierzu war ihm bei seinen Reisen in Afrika gekommen.
Nach dem Essen, das übrigens sehr gut schmeckte, geht es zu Ouroboros, die Touren und Bikes anbieten. Keine gewöhnlichen Fahrräder sondern Fatbikes, Das sind Fahrräder mit leichtem Rahmen und extra breiten Reifen. Eric Schlemme und Susanne Törnlind, die beiden Besitzer, erwarten uns bereits.
Wir bekommen eine kurze Einführung von Eric, dann werden rasch die Sitze in der Höhe individuell eingestellt und schon geht es los. Olov, ein versierter Radkünstler, sowie Eric und Susanne begleiten uns.
Zuerst fahren wir auf einem Wanderweg durch einen Park um ein Gefühl für die Räder zu entwickeln. Nach kurzer Zeit treffen wir auf einen Skatepark, wo uns Olov ein paar seiner Übungen zeigt.
Im weiteren Verlauf passieren wir das Stahlwerk in Lulea und bekommen einen kleinen Eindruck davon, welche Bedeutung die Stahlindustrie und der Erzabbau in Schweden hat.

Gammelstad Church Town, Gammelstads Kyrkstad, was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. 1000 years ago, Gammelstad in Swedish Lapland was an island at the mouth of the Lule river. The few people of the North-Bothnian culture group here lived from fishing and hunting and later from reindeer breeding. A rural culture arose at that time.
The church formed the political and cultural center of the widely dispersed population. After the Treaty of Nöteborg in 1323, Sweden and Russia disagreed about their northern border. Present-day Norrbotten was incorporated into the Swedish state. Simple wooden churches marked the border. In the 14th century, the church was also responsible for administrative tasks, like taxes and national censuses. One would have built a city hall in today's time. At the beginning of the 15th century, one started the building of a stone church.
In the fifteenth century, a decree determined that trade was permitted only in cities. In 1621, Lulea was founded in lieu of the trading place. But, as early as 1649, one recognized that the port was becoming more and more absorbed by the Scandinavian postglacial rebound. Thus, Lulea was newly founded 10 km downstream, at the present place. Gammelstad is the old town of Lulea. A thousand years ago, Gammelstad was still 10 m lower.
Christoffer, our guide from the Visitor center showed us a model of Gammelstad in the 13th century.
The parish of Gammelstad stretched over an area of 90.000 km ², greater than today's Austria. Some churchgoers needed several days to come here. Thus each farmer, who lived more than 10 km away, was entitled to build a cottage here. Around the church are now about 400 small cottages.
The older population came together on holidays to celebrate the service, do trade and care for social contacts. During this time they were allowed to stay in their cottages. A permanent residence is not allowed in these houses. In the summer the young people come here for the confirmation lesson, often with the intention of finding a partner for life.

Gammelstad in Schwedisch Lappland war vor 1000 Jahren eine Insel im Mündungsdelta der Lule. Die wenigen Menschen der Nordbottnischen Kulturgruppe die hier lebten, ernährten sich von Fischfang und Jagd, später kam die Rentierzucht dazu.
Die Kirche bildete das politische und kulturelle Zentrum der weit verstreut lebenden Menschen. Nach dem Frieden von Nöteborg 1323, kam es zwischen Schweden und Russland immer wieder zum Streit um die Grenzziehung im Norden. Das heutige Norrbotten wurde ins schwedische Reich eingegliedert. Die Grenze wurde durch einfache Holzkirchen markiert.
Im 14. Jahrhundert war die Kirche auch für administrative Aufgaben, wie Steuern und Volkszählungen, zuständig. In der heutigen Zeit hätte man ein Rathaus gebaut. Anfang des 15. Jahrhunderts begann man mit dem Bau einer Steinkirche.
Im 15 Jahrhundert wurde durch einen Erlass bestimmt, dass Handel nur noch in Städten erlaubt war. 1621 wurde Lulea an der Stelle des Handelsplatz gegründet. Doch bereits 1649 erkannte man, dass der Hafen immer mehr durch die skandinavische Landhebung verlandete. Deshalb wurde Lulea 10 km flussabwärts, da wo es sich heute befindet, neu gegründet. Gammelstad ist also die Altstadt von Lulea. Vor 1000 Jahren lag Gammelstad noch 10 m niedriger.
Christoffer, unser Guide vom Visitor Center zeigte uns ein Modell von Gammelstad im 13. Jahrhundert.
Die Fläche des Pfarrei von Gammelstad betrug 90.000 km², also größer als das heutige Österreich. Manche Kirchenbesucher brauchten mehrere Tage um hierher zu kommen. So wurde jedem Bauern, der mehr als 10 km entfernt wohnte, das Recht zugestanden hier ein Cottage zu errichten. Rund um die Kirche befinden sich heute ca. 400 kleine Häuser
An Feiertagen kam die ältere Bevölkerung zusammen, um den Gottesdienst zu feiern, Handel zu betreiben und soziale Kontakte zu pflegen. Während dieser Zeit durften sie in den von ihnen errichteten Häusern übernachten. Ein ständiger Wohnsitz ist in diesen Häusern nicht gestattet. Im Sommer kommen für den Konfirmationsunterricht die Jugendlichen hierher, oft auch in der Absicht einen Partner fürs Leben zu finden.
