The Chambal River Valley Development marked one of the landmark actions of the First Five-Year Plan launched by the Government of India in 1951, after India attained independence in August 1947. The Chambal River had not until then been used for any major developmental works, and was proposed to be developed under a joint initiative of the state governments of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The three-stage proposal, drawn up in 1953, called for three dams to provide hydroelectric power generation, and a downstream barrage to use stored waters released from the upstream dams for irrigation.[10] The river's drop of 625 metres (2,051 ft) between its source in Mhow and the city of Kota, which marks the exit of the river from its gorge section into the plains of Rajasthan, was seen as having great hydroelectric potential

WATCH || अचानक टूटी Gandhi Sagar Bandh की रेलिंग, मांगी केन्द्र से मदद.
मध्यप्रदेश ( Madhyapradesh ) में भारी बारिश ( Heavey Rain ) के कारण जन जीवन अस्त-व्यस्त है। ऐसे में मंदसौर ( Mandasaur ) में गांधी सागर बांध ( Gandhisagar Dam ) की रेलिंग टूट गई। पानी की आवक ज्यादा होने के कारण गांधी सागर बांध में सभी 19 गेट खोल दिए गए हैं। इस बीच ये भी अफवाहें फैलाई जा रही थी भारी बारिश के कारण गांधी सागर बांध टूट गया है, लेकिन प्रशासन ने इसे अफवाह बताते हुए खारिज किया है। प्रशासन का कहना है कि गांधी सागर बांध की रेलिंग टूटी है और गांधी सागर बांध पूरी तरह से सुरक्षित है। यहां फंसे लोगों को बचाया जा रहा है। प्रशासन के अुनसार, पानी पेनस्टॉक गैलरी के ऊपर से बह रहा है। गांधी सागर बांध पर बने पावर स्टेशन में पानी घुस गया है। कर्मचारियों को रेस्क्यू कर बाहर निकाला गया है। बांध खतरे के निशान से ऊपर है जिस कारण से 50 से ज्यादा गांवो में घुसा पानी घुस गया है। इस कारण कई गांवों को खाली करा लिया गया है। कई गांव में अभी भी गांव में फंसे हुई हैं उन्हें बाहर निकालने के लिए हवाई मदद की जरूरत है। इस बीच कैबिनेट सचिव ने राजस्थान और मध्यप्रदेश के मुख्य सचिव से हालात को लेकर बात की। वहीं केन्द्र सरकार से मदद की अपील भी की गई है।

गांधी सागर बांध में 1.24 लाख क्यूसेक पानी की आवक एवं 6.52 लाख क्यूसेक पानी बाहर किया जा रहा है मंदसौर कलेक्टर मनोज पुष्प द्वारा बताया गया कि प्रातः 4:30 बजे की स्थिति के अनुसार गांधी सागर बांध 1316.54 फिट तक भरा हुआ है गांधी सागर बांध में स्थित 1.14 लाख क्यूसेक पानी आ रहा है और 6.52 लाख क्यूसेक पानी छोड़ा जा रहा है गांधी सागर बांध में लगातार 19 गेट से पानी छोड़ा जाता है तो 18 घंटे में 2 फीट पानी कम होगा इस लिहाज से 1313 फ़ीट का लेवल आने में भी अभी 40 घंटे का वक्त लगेगा Total 19 gates opened of gandhi sagar dam to maintain the level of water but water quantity is so high which will take time to come in to normal situation

The Gandhi Sagar Dam is one of the four major dams built on India's Chambal River. The dam is located in the Mandsaur, Neemuch districts of the state of Madhya Pradesh
The Gandhi Sagar dam is the first of the four dams built on the Chambal River, located on the Rajasthan-Madhya Pradesh border. It is a 64 metre high masonry gravity dam, with a live storage capacity of 6,920 MCM (million cubic metres) and a catchment area of 22,584 km2, of which only 1,537 km2 is in Rajasthan. The dam was completed in the year 1960. The hydro-power station comprises five generating units of 23 MW capacity each. The water released after power generation is used for irrigation through Kota Barrage.

The dam sports a 115-MW hydroelectric power station at its toe, with five 23-MW generating units each providing a total energy generation of about 564 GWh.[3] The water released after power generation is used for the irrigation of 427,000 hectares (1,060,000 acres) by the Kota Barrage, which is located 104 kilometres (65 mi) downstream of the dam, near the city of Kota in the state of Rajasthan.[2][4][5]
The dam's reservoir area is the second-largest in India (after the Hirakud Reservoir), and attracts a large number of migratory and non-migratory birds throughout the year. The International Bird Life Agency (IBA) has qualified the reservoir under A4iii criteria, as the congregation of waterbirds is reported to exceed 20,000 at some points.
