Sarnath Varanasi Video Visit Temples Stupas Pillars & Gardens, Indian Food Paneer. India Travel Vlog
India video of Sarnath Varanasi and Indian Food (Paneer). India Travel Vlog from Travel with Simon. Stupas, Pillars, temples and gardens.
Varanasi (also known as Benares, Banaras and/or Kashi) in Uttar Pradesh India is known as the spiritual capital of India, but as a tourist Varanasi city itself it can be a bit intense. Nearby (about 13km from town) and well worth a visit is Sarnath, the holiest of seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism.
Lord Buddha is said to have preached his first sermon at the Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath, making it one of the most recognisable sites of Buddhism in India and thronged with followers of Buddhism as well as tourists, but it’s still quiet in comparison to the chaos of Varanasi and international visitors to the area will enjoy the green of the gardens as well as the temples, pillars and stupas.
The archaeological museum at Sarnath is the oldest site museum of Archaeological Survey of India. The Lion Capitol of Ashoka (a sculpture of four lions standing back to back) which forms the basis of the official Emblem of India was originally placed atop the Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath, but is now housed in the Sarnath Museum.
All the temples, shrines and points of interest in Sarnath including the Dhamekh stupa, the ruins of the Mulagandha Kuti, the main shrine where Buddha is said to have sat in meditation, the Chaukhandi stupa and the golden temple at Sarnath are within walking distance of the museum.
After haggling over the cost of a Tuk Tuk to get from Varanasi to Sarnath, and exploring the temples, archaeological sites and gardens of Sarnath, I also get to taste some of my first Indian food, including paneer.
Join me in my next video of India when I return to the holy city of Varanasi to see the ghats and watch the ceremonies on the bank of the Ganges river.

Varanasi, India: The Important Buddhist Site of Sarnath
It is a short ride from Varanasi to Sarnath located on the outskirts of Varanasi where Lord Buddha is said to have delivered his first sermon after enlightenment; preaching his four noble truths. The Buddha was enlightened in Bodhgaya and then went to Sarnath seeking his five former companions, taught them what he learned and they also became enlightened.
Important sights are: the Dharmekh Stupa (128 feet high, 93 feet in diameter) dating from around 200 BC and said to be the spot on which Buddha preached his first sermon; Mulangandhakuti Vihara where a small cottage once stood that Buddha lived in; and what remains of the Ashokan pillars with two writings on it. A lion capital once topped the Ashoka Pillar and is now on display inside the Sarnath Archaeological Museum; sorry no photos allowed inside and would you believe they didn't even sell a postcard of the exquisite lions?
Foreigners walk to their classes on a rainy day - Parmarth Ashram
Foreigners walk to their Yoga classes on a rainy day during International Yoga Festival at the Parmarth Ashram in Rishikesh.
Rishikesh is a land known as the “home of the rishis.” Its alternate spelling of Hrishikesh refers to Lord Vishnu, as Lord of the Senses – it is, therefore, a land in which to conquer one’s senses, to conquer the call of desire, to become master of oneself.
It is to this place which in the early 1940s, a revered saint from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh named Pujya Swami Shukdevanandji began coming, to meditate on the banks of Ganga. As he did so, he slowly began to construct a small space for himself and Pujya Swami Bhajananandji to stay. Slowly, as more and more devotees came to listen to the wisdom of these masters, more rooms needed to be built, along with a satsang hall and bhojanalaya (dining hall). Swami Shukdevanandji named these simple, small huts, basic hall and bhojanalaya, “Parmarth Niketan”, an abode dedicated to the welfare of all. He was a saint dedicated not only to his own spiritual practice, not only to his own enlightenment, but to bringing light to others. He was dedicated to doing whatever he could to help the downtrodden - whether physically downtrodden or spiritually downtrodden.
Parmarth Niketan has now blossomed over the nearly 70 years of its existence into the largest ashram in Rishikesh and one of the largest spiritual institutions in India - a world renowned sanctuary of peace, joy, inspiration and spiritual communion for people of all walks of life, from every corner of the Earth. Today, twelve months a year, Parmarth Niketan is full of seekers, pilgrims, devotees and travelers looking to experience the gift, the secret, the Divine Touch that is present in this spiritual center, on the holy banks of the Ganga, in the lap of the Himalayas, in an area called Swargashram, or literally “Heavenly Abode.”
Parmarth Niketan is a true spiritual haven, lying on the holy banks of Mother Ganga in the lap of the lush Himalayas. It is the largest ashram in Rishikesh, providing its thousands of pilgrims who come from all corners of the Earth with a clean, pure and sacred atmosphere as well as destockmark, beautiful gardens. With over 1,000 rooms, the facilities are a perfect blend of modern amenities and traditional, spiritual simplicity.

Sarnath - India . Holy place of Buddhist pilgrimage
SARNATH - BEAUTIFUL PELERINAJ
This is the area where Gautama Buddha lived and taught the first time Dharma, one of the major pilgrimage sites for both Buddhists and Hindus.
Located 13 kilometers north of the city of Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India near the confluence between the Ganges and the Varuna rivers. The place is inimitable the deer park. The Stuff commemorates Buddha's life and deeds
After adopting the life of a religious master, from the age of 35 until his death in 486 BC At the age of 80, the Buddha surrendered noble truths: the appetite for pleasure and the avoidance of pain leads to suffering. Salvation through the exit of the samsara and the possibility of reaching nirvana through its own effort.

Boat Ride in River Ganges Varanasi and walk on the other side of river.
After Walking on the Ghats of Varanasi, luckily for me, I go a very affordable boat ride. While the boatman was willing to go all the way to Assi Ghat, my only wish was to cross the river and visit the other side of river Ganga and enjoy the river bank. I was fortunate enough to do that and the boatman drop me at Dashashwamedh Ghat close to Ahilyabai Ghat where I stayed.

Across the Ganges in Varanasi: Sandy river banks and people immersing in spirituality!
Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi`s Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed. Mark Twain, the English author and literature, who was enthralled by the legend and sanctity of Benaras, once wrote: Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together . According to the 'Vamana Purana', the Varuna and the Assi rivers originated from the body of the primordial Person at the beginning of time itself. The tract of land lying between them is believed to be 'Varanasi', the holiest of all pilgrimages. The word 'Kashi' originated from the word 'Kas' which means to shine. Steeped in tradition and mythological legacy, Kashi is the 'original ground ' created by Shiva and Parvati, upon which they stood at the beginning of time. Varanasi is the microcosm of Hinduism, a city of traditional classical culture, glorified by myth and legend and sanctified by religion, it has always attracted a large number of pilgrims and worshipers from time immemorial.
To be in Varanasi is an experience in itself an experience in self--discover an eternal oneness of the body and soul. To every visitor; Varanasi offers a breathtaking experience. The rays of the dawn shimmering across the Ganges, the high-banks, the temples and shrines along the banks bathed in a golden hue soul stirring hymns and mantras alongwith the fragrance of incense filling the air and the refreshing dip in the holy waters gently splashing at the Ghats. Varanasi -- the land where experience and discovery reach the ultimate bliss. Varanasi is also renowned for its rich tapestry of music, arts, crafts and education. Some of the world renowned exponents India has produced in these fields were schooled in Varanasi's cultural ethos. Luminaries apart, Varanasi abounds in the art of silk weaving, an exotic work of art which manifests itself in precious Banarasi Silk Sarees and Silk brocades which are cherished as collector's items across the world today.
Varanasi is not only the cultural capital of India but occupies a significant place when it comes to commerce. The city is a flourishing commercial center. The shopping hotspots in Varanasi are Chowk, Gyan Vapi, Vishwanath Gali, Thatheri Bazar, Dashswamedh Gali and Golghar. Banarasi silk saris form an indispensable part of Indian Bride's trousseau and no Indian weddings are complete without them. To search some of these, one can visit the Temple bazaar and government-run emporia at Godaulia, Lahurabir and the Chowk. Varanasi is also famous for its brass-work. One can check Thateri bazaar for wall paintings and other articles. Otherwise one can just stroll down the lanes in the heart of the city and marvel at unusual objects on display such as brassware, copperware , wooden and clay toys and antique designs of heavy gold jewellery .
The other shopping attractions of varanasi include the hand-knotted carpets of Mirzapur. The wholesale flower market of Varanasi is also very popular in north India. The sale of flowers is very high particularly during the festivals of Deewali and Dhanteras. The city has a tremendously rich tradition of handicrafts, which makes for a wonderful shopping in Varanasi. Besides the illustrious fine silk and brocade fabrics one can also buy shawls, glass beads , bangles ,masks of Hindu and Buddhist deities lampshades, Kamandalam used by the saints to carry water etc. Most of the hotels have shopping arcades or showrooms within the complex. Banaras is also famous for mango varities such as Langda or Malda .Betel leaf is another specialty of Banaras and is a part of the cultural upbringing of the people of Banaras. The musical instruments made by the craftsman of Banaras are used by the renowned artists such as Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Bismillah Khan etc. are the few ones.

Monastery RELIGIOUS - Stupa Sarnath (Varanasi)
Sarnath is the deer park where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna. Sarnath is located 13 kilometres north-east of Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, India. Singhpur, a village one km away from the site, was the birthplace of Shreyansanath, the eleventh Tirthankara of Jainism, and a temple dedicated to him, is an important pilgrimage site.
Isipatana is mentioned by the Buddha as one of the four places of pilgrimage which his devout followers should visit, if they wanted to visit a place for that reason.[1] It was also the site of the Buddha's Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, which was his first teaching after attaining enlightenment, in which he taught the four noble truths and the teachings associated with it.
