We are in the mountains near Missoula, Montana and exploring the former mining town of Garnet. Now under the management and protection of the Bureau of Land Management, Garnet is considered one of the best preserved ghost towns in the United States.

Garnet Ghost Town | Abandoned Gold Mining Town | Montana | USA | HD
Garnet is a ghost town in Granite County, Montana, United States. Located on the dirt Garnet Range Road, it is an abandoned mining town that dates from the 1860s. In First Chance Gulch in western Montana, the town is located 11 miles up the Garnet Range Road, in mountains and forest. The town is at about 6,000 feet (1,800 m) elevation.The town was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Garnet Historic District, a historic district, in 2010. The listing included 82 contributing buildings, 46 contributing structures, and 56 contributing sites, as well as four non-contributing buildings, on 134 acres.
Garnet was famous for its saloons; at its peak, the saloons were one of the hottest spots in Garnet.

Dirt Road Drive to a Ghost Town: Garnet, Montana
You can't get to Montana's best-preserved ghost town without getting a little dirty. This drive begins in Drummond on I-90, then heads north on dirt roads to Garnet, then on to Montana Route 200.

I made this trip in July 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Garnet has been abandoned for almost 100 years.
The tiny Montana outpost was established in the 1860s by miners looking for gold and silver, but it was devastated by fire around 1912 and deserted a few years later.
While the town has since been restored, it remains empty, and local folklore says the area is haunted by former residents, with visitors saying they heard music and laughter, even in winter, and the sound of doors slamming in cottages where there aren't any doors.
Now the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is offering free food, housing a job to people willing to live in Garnet and work as a tour operator, as the government prepares the village to become a new tourist stop.
There are four positions, with some workers operating as tour guides and others keeping the grounds.
The job ad was first posted in local newspaper The Missoulian, expecting to only find interest from within Montana
It stressed there was no electricity or plumbing.
Regardless, the story was almost immediately shared 32,000 on Facebook.
The following day, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's office in Missoula was inundated with calls and emails.
'The calls came in almost immediately,' BLM spokeswoman Maria Craig told The Missoulian.
'Garnet Ghost Town Ranger Nacoma Gainan told me the next morning he already had 130 emails and he didn't know how many phone calls. The phone was ringing all morning.
'We got people asking about it from South Africa, from China, the United Kingdom, Germany and all over the country.'
'There were more out-of-state people than Montanans calling.'

Bannack is a ghost town in Beaverhead County, Montana, United States, located on Grasshopper Creek, approximately 11 miles (18 km) upstream from where Grasshopper Creek joins with the Beaverhead River south of Dillon. Founded in 1862, the town contemporarily operates as a National Historic Landmark and is managed by the state of Montana as Bannack State Park.

Out in the wild of Montana there lies this town forgotten by time.
ABANDONED GOLD MINE GHOST TOWN - MONTANA
Hello everyone, hope your day is going well! My name is Liz and today I will be showing you footage of a gold mine ghost town I visited on August 21st, 2018. This ghost town is near Virginia City, Montana and is very isolated in the hills. There are no signs to get to it and I was only informed of its existence by a local tour guide.
These buildings were built and used around the early 1900s, but I am not clear on exact dates. If any of you recognize the equipment or structural patterns and can trace it to a certain time period, that would be very helpful! I am not well educated in gold mining and would love to learn more about the structures and objects I have filmed.

Bannock State Park Historic Ghost Town Montana #throughglass Bannock was founded in 1862 and was the first Territorial Capital of Montana. Great place to stop and check out the history here. Really cool old build that you can go in and walk thru. You can even stay and camp down by Grasshopper Creek where they had discovered gold here in the 1800's.
