Montgomery, Indiana | Study Tour 2015: Religion in American Society (Part 4/5)
PART 4: MONTGOMERY, INDIANA
In Indiana, the group visited an Old Order Amish community to learn about Amish life and faith.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
In 2015, a group of American studies students from Leipzig University, Germany, and Jagiellonian University Kraków, Poland went on a study tour to the US to learn about the role of religion in American society. After a preperatory seminar concerned with religion in the US, the group applied their knowledge in field research.
Travelling to the cities of Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, and Chicago, as well as an Amish community in southern Indiana, the group visited religious communities and institutions, scholars, NGOs, as well as important historical sights to find out just how central religion still is in people's everyday lives.
This five part series documents this trip.

8th Annual Ride with the Governor
August 10, 2012 - Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels led approximately 1,000 motorcyclists on a 197-mile ride through some of Indiana's most beautiful countryside. After lunch at Shakamak State Park, participants rode through Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area offering some spectacular views of water fowl. The group also visited the Gasthof Amish Village in Montgomery ultimately arriving at The French Lick Resort.
Dubbed the Last Roundup, this eighth ride of the Daniels administration was created to promote motorcycle safety and awareness. The cumulative mileage of this event equates to nearly a million miles of exposure and the most significant injury has been a deep bruise.
Over the last five years, this ride has served as a fundraiser for the Indiana National Guard Relief Fund, providing financial grants to Indiana Soldiers and their families that have encountered difficult situations due to Soldiers being mobilized or in times of financial hardship. This year's event generated $12,088.51, bringing the five year total to more than $55,000.00. ABATE of Indiana and Governor Daniels are grateful for the sacrifices made by the Indiana National Guard soldiers and their families and are honored to recognize them with this event.

SHANNON + CAM {a wedding at Joseph Decuis Farm in Columbia City, Indiana}
Watch more films
We rushed back from a wedding shoot on the tropical beaches of Ocho Rios, Jamaica and immediately headed north to the rolling agriculture of northern Indiana to capture Shannon + Cam’s story at the amazing, pristine Joseph Decuis Farm near Columbia City. We had no idea that this perfect venue existed and it instantly became our new favorite wedding venue. The farm became an ideal atmosphere Shannon + Cam to wed while surrounded by their inviting family and friends. There were several times throughout the day when Dani and I looked at each other, knowing exactly what we were both thinking…”is this real life”? In fact, those were the exact same words expressed by Shannon as she climbed into her wedding dress as she prepared to walk down the aisle to meet her anxious groom. It felt as if we stumbled across a movie set, but it was indeed real. We think you’ll see what we mean as you watch their very special highlight film.

Treasure Hunt Drawing K Of C Washington
Knights of Columbus Treasure Hunt Game
Someone Wins over 2.5 Million Dollars This Saturday
A little over three years ago, Council 360 of the Knights of Columbus in Washington, Indiana was in dire straights and was even considering the possibility of disbanding. That’s when three members of the Catholic-based Fraternal Organization, Randy Emmons, Dan Bennett and Jon Casper decided to invest in the Treasure Hunt Progressive Jackpot Game as a way to draw crowds and money to their club. Treasure Hunt was the first unlimited jackpot game approved for Charity Gaming use in Indiana.
The game has done more for the Knights of Columbus and the Washington community than anyone could ever have hoped. The first K of C Treasure Hunt board lasted 49 weeks and in December 2016, a little over a year after starting the game, the jackpot reached 1.89 million dollars before it was won by a man from Montgomery, Indiana who took home $1,121,376.00 after taxes.
This Saturday evening, the 50th week of the second Treasure Hunt board, someone will win a $2,561,500 jackpot when the drawing takes place at 7 pm in front of a crowd of thousands on Main Street in this small southern Indiana town. How does the jackpot get to be so high? Consider that over 400,000 tickets were sold at a dollar apiece for last week’s drawing. 80 per cent of money from the tickets sold for the game goes into the jackpot. The other 20 per cent goes to the Knights of Columbus.
Not only is the K of C now on very stable financial ground, the entire community has benefited from the surprising success of the Treasure Hunt game. 40 percent of the funds the club keeps is donated back to the community and with money from the club’s first two Treasure Hunt boards, the Washington Knights of Columbus have now donated $617,736 to local charities.
The club’s second Treasure Hunt board had its first drawing on April 22, 2017 with a beginning jackpot of $200,000. Tickets for the Treasure Hunt are $1 each. Purchasers write their name, phone number and a number from 1 to 50 on the back of each ticket bought. The current Treasure Hunt game has had 49 drawings where a single ticket has been drawn from a rotating drum containing only tickets sold during the week before each drawing. 49 times there has been no jackpot winner and the number of tickets sold keeps increasing as the game continues. Now there is only one number left on the Treasure Hunt board, and this week, there will be a winner.
Tickets can only be purchased at the Knights of Columbus in Washington on weekdays from 10 am to 8 pm and Saturday 8 am to 6:45 pm. To be a valid ticket the purchaser’s name, phone number and the number 50 must be written on the back of the ticket. Ticket sales will end at 6:45 Saturday evening. At 7 o’clock the last tickets will be put into the rotating drum. Then, one ticket will be drawn in front of a crowd of around 10,000 people in the streets of downtown Washington in front of the Knights of Columbus Club. The whole jackpot of $2,561,500 will be awarded if the winner is present at the raffle. If the winner is not present, half of the jackpot will be awarded.
