Hamlet by William Shakespeare | Gate Theatre - Dublin, Ireland | 21 September - 27 October 2018
21st September – 27th October, 2018
“The time is out of joint. O, cursèd spite,
That ever I was born to set it right!”
A murdered King. A remarried Queen. A state on the precipice. When society starts to collapse, do we fight or flee?
Hamlet is one of the most revived Shakespeare plays in the Gate’s 90 year history (1928-2018). In celebration of the theatre’s pioneering founders, Hilton Edwards and Micheál Mac Liammóir, Shakespeare’s iconic story of politics, vengeance, madness and murder is reimagined in a ground-breaking, visionary Gate Theatre production for today’s audience.
Oscar-nominated Irish actress, Ruth Negga, makes her Gate stage debut in the title role of Hamlet, joined by a cast of Ireland’s finest actors. Award-winning director Yaël Farber heads an exciting creative team including Tony award-winning set and costume designer Susan Hilferty, lighting designer Paul Keogan and composer Tom Lane.
Hamlet officially opened the 2018 Dublin Theatre Festival.

IRISH PREMIERE
28th September - 11th November, 2017
With crackling dialogue and sharp, compassionate insights, Nina Raine crafts a penetrating, deeply moving and shockingly funny play.
The Irish Premiere of this award-winning play relocates the action from leafy suburban Hampstead to South County Dublin where Billy, born deaf into a hearing family, struggles to define who he is within his highly intellectual, yet emotionally possessive, clan.
Oonagh Murphy, one of Ireland’s brightest directing talents makes her directorial debut at the Gate with this play about belonging, family and the limitations of communication.
Presented as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival.
There will be an Irish Sign Language interpreted performance on Friday the 13th of October. The sign language interpreter is Caroline O'Leary. Theatre Conversations: Waiting For Godot, with Gate Theatre (Dublin)
Two tramps meet by the roadside, and endlessly wait for someone—or something—named Godot. Samuel Beckett's most popular work masterfully examines the tedium and hope of human existence. Experience the closest production we will ever get to the perfect official Godot (The Irish Times) in a discussion with director Walter Asmus and cast members Stephen Brennan, Barry McGovern, Johnny Murphy, and Alan Stanford, along with video excerpts of a filmed adaptation of the play by Gate Theatre in Dublin (recorded in 2006 at George Washington University in Washington, DC).

Theatre-Making at the Gate Theatre
Fighting Words partnered with the Gate Theatre and Universities of Sanctuary Ireland to run a series of theatre-making workshops for refugees and asylum seekers. The workshops took place in the Studio at the Gate Theatre. Working with Fighting Words volunteers, the participants wrote songs, created characters and put short scenes together through improvisation and writing short scripts. The time at the Gate included a tour of the building, encouraging the idea of site as inspiration, and a trip to see The Snapper.
On the final day the participants performed their work, bringing their characters to life in front of an audience. This included both acting and singing, and proved to be a hit with all of those in attendance on the day.

Late at the Gate is a new initiative where mini-productions, platforms and post-show discussions run in parallel with productions on stage. These events aim to provide a forum for audiences and artists to respond to productions in the context of what is happening in the world today.

Orson Welles & The Gate Theatre - TG4 Documentary (17/11/11) (1/2)
Scéalta Átha Cliath-Orson Welles,The Gate Theatre
A new documentary that explores the legendary actor/director Orson Welles links to Dublin which have gone largely undocumented and demonstrates that his formative time at the Gate Theatre contributed greatly to the performer he would become. He was 16 years old when he came to Dublin. He'd arrived in Galway from the USA on what was to be a European art-tour but he decided to go no further than Ireland. A chance meeting with a young actor resulted in the young Orson arriving at the door of the Gate Theatre.
