Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen Gate), Beijing
Constructed in 1417, the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen Gate) was originally a three-storey timberwork gateway called Chengtianmen (Gate of Accepting Heavenly Mandate). It was burnt down in a big fire in 1451 and rebuilt in 1465. Unfortunately, it was ruined at the end of the Ming Dynasty due to the peasant uprising led by Li Zicheng. In 1651, Chengtianmen was rebuilt again and renamed as Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen Gate).

TIANANMEN SQUARE AND THE FORBIDDEN CITY, BEIJING 12 SEPT 2018 HD
No visit to Beijing would be complete without a visit to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.
At over 400,000 sq meters in area, Tiananmen Square is easily the largest urban square in the world. During the late Qing dynasty the Boxer Rebellion caused widespread destruction in Beijing - the area was cleared and the square was born, though it did not achieve its current size until the Mao era.
To north of Tiananmen Square is the famous portrait of Mao Zedong, on the gate from which the square takes its name, the Gate of Heavenly Peace - Tiananmen.
The Forbidden City is the former Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty (the years 1420 to 1912) it now houses the Palace Museum. The Forbidden City served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government for almost 500 years.
Tiananmen Square / 天安门广场 / 天安門廣場 (Slideshow)
Tiananmen Square / 天安门广场 / 天安門廣場 is a city square in the centre of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) located to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City. The square contains the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China in the square on October 1, 1949; the anniversary of this event is still observed there. Tiananmen Square is within the top ten largest city squares in the world (440,500 m2 – 880×500 m or 109 acres – 960×550 yd).
The square is normally open to the public, but remains under heavy security. Before entry, visitors and their belongings are searched, a common practice at many Chinese tourist sites, although the square is somewhat unusual in that domestic visitors often have their identification documents checked and the purpose of their visit questioned. Both plain-clothes and uniformed police officers patrol the area. There are numerous fire extinguishers placed in the area to put out flames should a protester attempt self-immolation.

Beijing China - Tiananmen Square
This high definition video, shot in late 2010, provides a contemporary look at Tiananmen Square, the massive city square located in the heart of Beijing. Colourful gardens, fountains, hi-tech video screens, relaxing music and important national symbols all help to make Tiananmen a pleasant place to visit. It almost makes one forget about the massacre of Chinese students that took place here in the summer of 1989.
Important buildings and structures appearing in this video include Zhengyangmen Gate, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the Great Hall of the People, Gate of Heavenly Peace and the National Museum of China.
