Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, Japan 平和記念公園
Filmed inside the Hiroshima Memorial Museum and at Hiroshima Peace Park: The Peace Clock tower which was established by the Hiroshima Rijo Lions Club and chimes every morning at 8.15 am precisely which is the time the bomb went off.
The Memorial Cenotaph framing the Peace Flame and the A-Bomb Dome, covers a cenotaph holding the names of all of the people killed by the bomb.
The A Bomb Dome was once used as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall and is located about 160 meters from the bomb's hypocenter; All those inside at the time were killed.
The Peace Flame has been burning continuously since 1964 and will not be extinguished ''until all nuclear bombs on the planet are destroyed and the planet is free from the threat of nuclear annihilation.''
The Gates of Peace are ten gates covered with the word peace in 49 languages and are situated across the road from the museum.
The Peace Bell was cosntructed by the A-bomb Victims Hiroshima Higankessho-no-kai Union.
The Hiroshima Peace Museum and Park are a deeply moving experience which seek to further our desire for a peaceful planet.

Japan - Hiroshima Castle & Miyajima Itsukushima Shrine by Drone 4K
The great Torii is the boundary between the spirit and the human worlds.
Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima (popularly known as Miyajima), best known for its floating torii gate. The shrine has more than 1400 years of history, and is a registered as an World Heritage Site.
Hiroshima Castle was constructed in the 1590s, but was destroyed by the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. The present tower, constructed largely of concrete, was completed in 1958.

Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園, Heiwa Kinen Kōen) is one of the most prominent features of the city. Even visitors not looking for it will likely stumble upon the large park of over 120,000 square meters. Its trees, lawns, and walking paths are in stark contrast to the surrounding downtown area.
Before the bomb, the area of what is now the Peace Park was the political and commercial heart of the city. For this reason, it was chosen as the pilot's target. Four years to the day after the bomb was dropped, it was decided that the area would not be redeveloped but instead devoted to peace memorial facilities. ????????

Kyoto & Hiroshima Japan
We visited the famous torii gates (Fushimi Inari-taisha) in Kyoto before heading to Hiroshima. There were way more gates than I was expecting! You walked up the mountain to various shrines through these gates for 2.5 miles (thousands of gates according to wikipedia). It was really amazing, but as you can imagine it was a huge tourist attraction so I would recommend getting up really early in the morning to check it out. At the bottom of the mountain they had some street food which was a good snack to quickly eat before venturing on. On our way to Hiroshima we stopped at a rock climbing gym. The gym was in the middle of nowhere but the man who owned it was really nice! We are officially members at Labo rock climbing gym! After that we hopped back on the train to continue on to Hiroshima. While in Hiroshima we visited the peace memorial, atomic bomb dome, and more. We went on a search for late night snacks and found Stick Chou at Doutor (my favorite), and Choco Cro.
P.S. Hiroshima okonomiyaki is the best style of okonomiyaki in Japan if you ask me!!!

Exploring Hiroshima & Miyajima
JAPAN AGAIN! This time we travel to Hiroshima & Miyajima Island to explore a beautiful a part of Japan that is full of history. Hiroshima has an unfortunate history but one that comes with a big lesson for the rest of the world, so for sure we had to visit the Peace Memorial Park and A Bomb Dome Site. It's a peaceful place but can't help the surreal feeling of being in the area. The weather wasn't so good to us so when we got to Miyajima Island it became completely blanketed with fog, rain and wind. We were hoping for an amazing view of Japan from the top of Mt Misen but there was nothing but still awesome to see the Itsukushima Shrine and tori gate. Hiroshima Castle to end the trip but we didn't leave without trying the amazing Hiroshima foods: Okonomiyaki at Okonomimura, Bakudanya Tsukemen, Miyajima cakes and oysters and more. Japan -- Hiroshima
There was one more city we really wanted to visit in Japan: Hiroshima. To avoid some of the planning we participated in an organized though unguided tour, which basically meant that they would book us a room in a hotel, and send us our Shinkansen tickets together with some maps. Amazingly enough, defying some basic laws of economy, it barely cost us more than the price we would have paid for just the Shinkansen...
The day we left Tsukuba I was recovering from a flu that was at that moment starting to get the better of Annett. By sleeping long every night we were able to postpone the worst to the next week (fortunately she didn't miss out on any of here precious microscopy time).
We visited a beautiful, wooden castle, and Milica joined us in our quest to visit the famous Atomic Bomb Dome. Just next to the dome was the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and both were lying in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which was built around the hypocenter of the bomb.
In the museum we spent hours reading about the background, and looking at painful pictures, movies and objects, showing us the destructive power of the atomic bomb. One of the horrifying things we saw, was a stone stairs that had turned white everywhere, except an area that clearly must have been occupied by a human. In the museum there was a wall filled with protest letters from the mayor against each nuclear test that has been performed after Hiroshima (that we know of). These are things that will be engraved in our memories forever.
However, now Hiroshima is a beautiful town famous for its sea food. Together with a colleague of Milica, Sasaki-san, we visited an oyster restaurant. This was the first time we ate oysters, and they were truly delicious. It is probably like Sasaki-san remarked: when your first oyster experience is with bad oysters you'll probably never eat oysters again, but when they are good you are hooked for life... Anyway, it is clear to me now that Annett and I fall into the first category... Just kidding! (I got you there!)
On the third and last day we visited the island Miyajima, which is famous for the floating gate, a torii that appears to be floating in the water. We visited beautiful shrines, parks, ate some udon with eel, and attended a monkey performance (we didn't know if we should feel sorry for him...). It was a wonderful experience...

The symbol of world peace, Hiroshima. Miya-jima Island symbolized by the Great Torii Gate in the Sea.
Hiroshima is situated at the center of the Chugoku region in western Honshu, the main island of Japan. In'no-shima Island and 150 other islands are located in the in the nearby Seto Inland Sea.
The Chugoku Mountains, rising to a height of some 1,000 meters, extend from east to west in the northern part of Hiroshima, with highways and national routes crossing mountain passes to connect the prefecture with areas along the Sea of Japan. The plains are narrow and the coastlines are mostly saw-toothed coasts, with mountains drawing close to the shore.
Nature abounds in Hiroshima Prefecture, which is surrounded both by ocean and mountains. Attractions include Setonaikai (Seto Inland Sea) National Park, Hibadogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park, and West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. Hiroshima City is known to the world as the first city ever attacked by an atomic bomb. There you will find the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome(Genbaku Dome), which symbolizes the importance of world peace. Adjacent to the Genbaku Dome, which has been inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site, is the Peace Memorial Park.
Itsuku-shima-jinja, the shrine inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site along with the Genbaku Dome in 1996, is located on Miya-jima Island. It is said to be one of the three most beautiful sights in Japan, and has been designated as a nation's historic site. Its symbol is the Great Torii Gate (shrine gate) that stands in the sea.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is a museum located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, in central Hiroshima, Japan, dedicated to documenting the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in World War II. The museum was established in August 1955 with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Hall.
A focal point of that is the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. It sits across the Motoyasu River from the famous Atomic Bomb Genbaku Dome, which withstood a direct blast from the bomb.
The museum is elevated on a series of columns that overlooks greenery in every direction where there was once ruin and desolation.
Designed by Kenzō Tange and inaugurated in 1955, the museum is now a national and international symbol for peace.
Evocative exhibits at the museum include a blistered and fused tricycle that a 4-year-old boy was riding during the blast that burned him to death. Similar moments are invoked through artifacts as small as a wristwatch or a lunch box carried by a student who perished at school.
These give a sense of the pain and suffering of the victims and their bereaved families
Photos, documentary films, nightmarish drawings by survivors, scientific explanations of the explosion and artifacts such as melted glass and charred clothing hint at the unimaginable.
This museum was established by the city of Hiroshima to convey the reality of the atomic bombing to the world, and contribute to the total abolition of nuclear weapons, and realization of lasting world peace,
The museum is where visitors and survivors alike come together to learn more about attack and reflect on its consequences and humanity's future. It has attracted millions of visitors to the city and has consistently been the top rated museum in Hiroshima.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum designed by Mr. Kenzo Tange, opened in 1955, aiming to convey the reality of the damage incurred by an atomic bomb to people around the world, and to contribute to the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of everlasting world peace.
At 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, Hiroshima became the world's first city destroyed by an atomic bomb. The bomb destroyed most of the city and claimed many lives. Some victims, who barely survived, also terribly suffered both mentally and physically, and many of these survivors are still suffering.
The Peace Memorial Museum has collected and exhibited victims' mementos and photos as well as materials that show the devastating damage caused by the A-bombing. It introduces the history of Hiroshima before and after the bombing and the situation of the nuclear age.
The museum also holds lectures on the experiences of the A-bombing by survivors and lends out materials for peace education.
The museum was designated as an Important Cultural Asset of Japan in July, 2006, for the first time as post-war architecture.
A Moving and Poignant Re-Opening for the Main Building of the Peace Memorial Museum
The Main Building of the Peace Memorial Museum closed its doors in 2017 for renovation and fortification against earthquakes, and after two long years, the wait is finally over. Opened on April 25, just before Hiroshima Flower Festival and the unprecedented 10-day Golden Week holidays, the newly renovated Main Building Exhibition Hall is an emotional journey that combines photographs, artwork, artifacts, and stories from survivors to paint a complete picture of the events and aftermath of August 6, 1945.
The exhibit opens as visitors make their way down a darkened hallway, illuminated only by the soft spotlight on a black-and-white photograph of a young girl in bandages. As visitors proceed, they are met with large panels of photographs of Hiroshima along with captions from eyewitnesses in Japanese and English before coming to 3 larger-than-life photographs of the infamous mushroom cloud. The photos, complete with people looking on in the foreground for perspective, give visitors a sense of the overwhelming size of the blast in terms that are easy to understand. The rough black walls of the exhibit provides a stark contrast to the photographs, adding another level of focus and emotion. Visitors are kept in a state of semi-darkness, paralleling the darkness and uncertainty that followed the bombing.
From there, the exhibit proceeds chronologically from the bombing to the effects of radiation, black rain, the ensuing firestorm, and the survivors in post-war Hiroshima. Raw snapshots of the aftermath, including photographs that openly depict children suffering from burns, soldiers with radiation poisoning, and bodies lined up on the ground, may be hard to face for some visitors. But these photographs are perhaps the most powerful deterrent we have against nuclear weapons, and without them, the picture of what happened on August 6 would be incomplete.
From photographs to actual artifacts such as the well-known charred bento box and twisted bicycle, the exhibit carefully explains each one in Japanese and English, and provides an audio tour, as well as explanation
MIYAJIMA JAPAN: A guide to Itsukushima and Hiroshima
A guide to Miyajima Island (actually named Itsukushima) and the city of Hiroshima. We visited Peace Memorial Park, which was a sobering and powerful experience. Miyajima Island might be my favorite place in all of Japan. The roaming deer, the nature, the scenery, the street food - all incredible. And the floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is amazing. The Miyajima ropeway up Mount Misen leads to some of the most beautiful views you'll ever see.
