Sandy Hook, New Jersey, USA
Sandy Hook is a barrier spit in Middletown Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The barrier spit, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) in length and varying from 0.1 to 1.0 mile (0.16 to 1.61 km) wide, is located at the north end of the Jersey Shore. It encloses the southern entrance of Lower New York Bay south of New York City, protecting it from the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The Dutch called the area Sant Hoek, with the English Hook deriving from the Dutch Hoek (corner, angle), meaning spit of land.
Most of Sandy Hook is owned and managed by the National Park Service as the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area.
Geologically, Sandy Hook is a large sand spit or barrier spit, the extension of a barrier peninsula along the coast of New Jersey, separated from the mainland by the estuary of the Shrewsbury River. On its western side, the peninsula encloses Sandy Hook Bay, a triangular arm of Raritan Bay. The 2,044-acre (8.27 km2) peninsula was discovered by Henry Hudson.
Exploring Fort Hancock And Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area
This is a video I put together on a weekend road trip to Fort Hancock And Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area in Highlands, NJ on 6/25/16. I spent a whole day exploring there. There's a lot to see there. Also a couple beaches too.
Fort Hancock is a former United States Army fort at Sandy Hook in Middletown Township New Jersey. The coastal artillery base defended the Atlantic coast and the entrance to New York Harbor. Between 1874 and 1919, Fort Hancock was operated in conjunction with the US Army's Sandy Hook Proving Ground. It is now part of Fort Hancock Memorial Park.
The Sandy Hook Light, the oldest working lighthouse in the United States, is located on the grounds of Fort Hancock.
In 1893, Fort Hancock installed the nation's first disappearing gun battery at Battery Potter. In the late 1950s anti-aircraft missiles from Project Nike were based at the fort.
Fort Hancock was decommissioned as an active U.S. Army installation in 1974. It is now part of the National Parks of New York Harbor under the National Park System. A museum is managed as part of the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. In 2013, the Park Service introduced Nubian goats to the fort in order to clear away poison ivy that has been growing unchecked on the six-acre property for about 40 years.
The NPS is soliciting proposals for renovation and use to the more than 35 buildings in the fort complex.
