The British Rail Class 442 Wessex Electric (or 5WES) electrical multiple units were introduced in 1988 on the South Western Main Line from London Waterloo to Southampton Central, Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth. Twenty-four of these 5-car units were built in 1988/89 by BREL at its Derby works. Their introduction coincided with the completion of electrification from Bournemouth to Weymouth. Post-privatisation, the entire fleet was operated by South West Trains up until February 2007, when the Class 442 services were replaced by Class 444 and Class 450 Desiros.
In 2008 Southern began refurbishing the units for the Gatwick Express service from Brighton to Gatwick Airport and London Victoria. The Southern refurbishment and overhaul programme meant by September 2012 the fleet had replaced all the Class 460 Juniper units. This was a controversial move, because the Class 442s are older than the Class 460s, have lower acceleration and were not designed for airport rail links. It is due to be replaced on Gatwick Express services by 2016 with the new Class 387.
The class holds the world speed record for a third rail train with 174 km/h (108 mph), attained on 11 April 1988.

Gatwick Express is a high-frequency rail passenger service between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport in South East England, operated by Southern. From July 2015, Gatwick Express will become a part of Govia Thameslink Railway, with the Gatwick Express brand being retained.
The service began in May 1984 with air-conditioned InterCity carriages operated by British Rail. When it was privatised in April 1996, National Express took over the franchise. In June 2008 Gatwick Express ceased to exist as a separate franchise, being merged into the Southern franchise, although it continues to maintain its own identity. Some peak-hour Gatwick Express services now continue beyond Gatwick Airport to Brighton.

Gatwick Airport is 2.7 nautical miles (5.0 km; 3.1 mi) north of the centre of Crawley, West Sussex, and 29.5 miles (47.5 km) south of Central London. Also known as London Gatwick, it is London's second-largest international airport and the second-busiest (by total passenger traffic) in the United Kingdom (after Heathrow). Gatwick is Europe's leading airport for point-to-point flights and has the world's busiest single-use runway, with a maximum of 55 aircraft movements per hour. Its two terminals (North and South) cover an area of 98,000 m2 (1,050,000 sq ft) and 160,000 m2 (1,700,000 sq ft), respectively. In 2014, 38.1 million passengers passed through the airport, a 7.5 per cent increase compared with 2013.
BAA Limited and its predecessors, BAA plc and the British Airports Authority, owned and operated Gatwick from 1 April 1966 to 2 December 2009. On 17 September 2008, BAA announced it would sell Gatwick after the Competition Commission published a report about BAA's market dominance in London and the South East. On 21 October 2009 it was announced that an agreement had been reached to sell Gatwick to a consortium led by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), who also have a controlling interest in London City and Edinburgh airports, for £1.51 billion. The sale was completed on 3 December.

A Walk Through The London Victoria Station, London, England
London Victoria station, generally known as Victoria, is a central London railway terminus and London Underground complex named after nearby Victoria Street the latter being named after Queen Victoria. With over 81 million passenger entries and exits between April 2013 and March 2014, London Victoria is the second-busiest terminus in London (and the UK) after London Waterloo, and includes an air terminal for passengers travelling by train to Gatwick Airport. It is one of 19 stations managed by Network Rail. The area around the station is an important interchange for other forms of transport: a local bus station is in the forecourt, and Victoria Coach Station for long-distance road coaches is nearby. Victoria is in Travelcard Zone 1.
Victoria is a London terminus for both Southern and Southeastern. Southern provides the majority of commuter/regional services to South London and Sussex as well as parts of East Surrey via the Brighton Main Line. Southeastern provides services in South East London and along the Chatham Main Line to Kent. It is also the terminus for the Gatwick Express service to Gatwick Airport.
There are effectively four railway stations on the site: on National Rail, two serving main-line routes in south eastern England, to Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Eastbourne, Canterbury and Dover; and on the London Underground, an underground station built by the cut-and-cover method serving the District and Circle lines and the deep-level Victoria line tube line station.
Victoria station (first referred as the Grosvenor Terminus) is the closest mainline station to Buckingham Palace.

Taking Gatwick Express from London Victoria to Gatwick Airport plus Wagamama Lunch
Today, we fly from London Gatwick to Paris CDG on EasyJet. We were staying in central London and figured that the most comfortable way to get to Gatwick Airport was via the non-stop & direct Gatwick Express trains which depart frequently from London Victoria station. So we took the Tube to London Victoria, and quickly found our way to the Gatwick Express platform (red, you can't miss it).
We had purchased our Gatwick Express tickets in advance, and our tickets were in our mobile phones (with QR codes). We arrived in time to catch the 1030hrs train to Gatwick. We walked to almost the front of the train, and we had the entire coach to ourselves! The train ride was very smooth and there were power sockets (UK sockets) by the seat so that I could charge my phone.
The Gatwick Express train station is directly connected to the London Gatwick Airport South Terminal. EasyJet flies from the North Terminal. So we had to find our way to the Airport Shuttle (which is an automated train system) to bring us to the North Terminal. All very easy.
After checking in our luggage for the EasyJet flight and clearing security, we had lunch at Wagamama's in the restricted area, before boarding our aircraft for Paris CDG. For our flight, EasyJet flies to Terminal 2D of Paris CDG.
Norwegian Air Passengers - Get from Gatwick to London on the Train
The success and popularity of Norwegian Air means more and more travelers need to research how to get from Gatwick Airport to the city of London. The good news is there is an express train the runs between the two every 15 minutes and is not badly priced for London standards.
This is our walk through of how to catch the Gatwick express from Gatwick Airport to London's Victoria Station.
