Very fitting in light of what happened today in New Zealand and the deaths that occurred there.
From Wikipedia
The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque (Bosnian: Gazi Husrev-begova Džamija, Turkish: Gazi Hüsrev Bey Camii), is a mosque in the city of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built in the 16th century, it is the largest historical mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the most representative Ottoman structures in the Balkans. Being the central Sarajevo's mosque since the days of its construction, today it also serves as the main congregational mosque of the Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in the Baščaršija neighborhood in the Stari Grad municipality and, being one of the main architectural monuments in the town, is regularly visited by tourists.
History
The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque was built in 937 AH (1530/1531 AD) as the central object of the Beg's endowment, which also included a maktab and a madrasa (Islamic primary and secondary schools), a bezistan (vaulted marketplace), a hammam (public bathplace) etc. The foundation of this waqf by the contemporary Ottoman governor of Bosnia had a crucial point in the development of the town. The architect's name is unknown, but after some speculations, which even included famous Mimar Sinan as an option, most scholars agreed that Acem Esir Ali Alaüddin, Ottoman mimar of Persian ancestry, is the most probable builder. It is still possible that Sinan himself did inspect the work on the spot, since he was in the region at the time.[1] Historical documents testify that Rhagusean masons, requested from their government by Gazi Husrev-beg, participated in the building process.
Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque was the first mosque in the world to receive electricity and electric illumination in 1898 during the period of Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The mosque belongs to the type of complex-spaced, multi-domed mosques and it is a represent of the Early Period of Classical Ottoman Architecture (sometimes referred to as Early Istanbul Style). The central rectangular space, framed by high walls and covered with a dome resting on pendentives, represents the spine of the structure, while lower extensions lean to it and expand the volume of the interior space. The Kibla side of the mosque is extended with a rectangular space which is covered by a semi-dome resting on two highly developed muqarnas structures. They stand in function of pendentives, reducing the rectangular outline of the ground level to the near semi-circle shape in level of the semi-dome. This area houses central architectural elements with religious purposes: mihrab, minbar and kursi and, being open to the central space with a huge arch, represents the focal point of the mosque. Two smaller spaces, called tetime (sg. tetima) are located on the left and right sides of the central space, placed furthest from the Kibla side. They are covered by two lower domes resting on pendentives.
The exterior is dominated by the main dome, topped out only by a simple, yet monumental minaret. The entry side is marked with a portico resting on four wide columns and covered with little domes, only the central one, above the portal, being a bit greater than others, and resting on muqarnas-adorned pendentives, in contrast to others which are laid on simple, plain-surfaced pendentives. The monumental portal is richly decorated with muqarnas, as well as columns' capitels.
In his legacy, he stated: Good deeds drive away evil, and one of the most worthy of good deeds is the act of charity, and the most worthy act of charity is one which lasts forever. Of all charitable deeds, the most beautiful is one that continually renews itself.

The remains of Tašlihana
Tašlihan (a stone han han ) is a former caravan-saray that was located at the site of the current hotel Evro in Sarajevo . He is the third most expensive stone caravan-saray in Sarajevo. It was built in the period from 1540 to 1543. from the legacy of Gazi Husrev-beg after his death. It was taken over by Gazi Husrev-beg's Bezistan , from its western side. There was a square base, 47 meters long. In his yard he had a horseshoe (stone fountain) on whose poles it was a small mosque . On the floor there were room for the passengers. Domestic and foreign traders had their actions within Tašlihana. It is considered that this caravan-sara has served more trade than passenger traffic. The fire from 1879 had severely damaged Tašlihan and made it unusable.
As part of the renovation, reconstruction and upgrading of the hotel Evropa, from June 5 to July 13, 1998, archaeological research was carried out in the part of the summer garden of the hotel. During the research, part of the foundations and massive walls of Han was discovered. [1]
2007 Archaeological area - the remains of Tašlihana were proclaimed a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
BAŠ-ČARŠIJA - S A R A J E V O - OLD TOWN ( 1462 - 2014) EPP
HAN ISA-BEGA ISHAKOVIĆA
Baščaršija (pronounced [baʃ.tʃǎr.ʃi.ja]) is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Baščaršija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isaković founded the town. The word Baščaršija derives from the Turkish language. The word baš which is baş in Turkish literally means head, in some contexts however also primary, main, capital and čaršija which is çarşı in Turkish means bazaar or market. Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Baščaršija is half the size that it once was.
Baščaršija is located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, in the municipality of Stari Grad. On Baščaršija there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and sahat-kula. Today Baščaršija is the major tourist attraction of Sarajevo.
Before the arrival of the Ottomans in the largest settlement on Sarajevo field was the village square Tornik, which was located at the crossroad of the roads where today is the Ali Pasha's Mosque. Baščaršija was built in 1462 when Isa-Beg Isaković built the Ishaković han, in addition to its many shops. At that time, most of the inhabitants of Sarajevo lived in the vicinity of the Emperor's Mosque. Therefore, Isa-Beg Isaković built a bridge across the Miljacka to focus the main Sarajevo suburb and a new economic center of the city, Baščaršija.
Around the main entrance, the Bazerdžani čaršija was formed. The čaršija Kazaz is situated to the west, and to the north sit both the čaršija Sedlar and Sarača. The most significant buildings constructed during this period are the mosques. Baščaršija's famous mosque was built by Havedža Durak in 1528, and Gazi Husrev-beg built his mosque in 1530.
Gazi Husrev-Beg raises a madrassa, a library, a haniqah, the Gazi Husrev-Beg Hamam, the Gazi Husrev-Beg bezistan, the Morića Han, sahat-kula and other tourist attractions in Baščaršija. Gazi Husrev-Beg was buried in the harem of his mosque, beside the harem is the Türbe of his freed slave and the first mutevelija of his vakuf Murat-beg Tardić.
At this time a number of commercial facilities was built, such as bezistans, hans, and caravanserais. Sarajevo was an important center of trade in the Balkans and had three bezistans (today the Gazi Husrev-Beg and Brusa bezistans are still standing). There were colonies of Venetian and Ragusan traders, and Baščaršija had approximately 12,000 commercial and craft shops. After the earthquake in 1640 and several fires in 1644 and 1656, Sarajevo was 1697 burned and devastated by the troops of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Travel writer Evliya Çelebi wrote: The čaršija has in everything, one thousand and eighty stores that are a model of beauty. The čaršija is very attractive and built according to plan.
The city of Sarajevo didn't еxpand significantly until the 19th century. With the Austro-Hungarian occupation in 1878, foreign architects wanted to re-build Sarajevo into a modern European city. A fire contributed to this process; it destroyed parts of the Stari Grad, and that is how the well-known boundary between Baščaršija and the street Ferhadija was made.
During the Anti-Serb riots of Sarajevo in June 1914, violent mobs looted and vandalized several Serb-owned shops in Baščaršija as well as other parts of the city.
With the liberation of Sarajevo in 1945 after the Second World War, a committee decided that the market should be gradually demolished, believing that it had no role in a modern city. However, the plans were cancelled, and the buildings were left standing.

Sarajevo susret kultura
“Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures” is the message of an inlaid marker on Ferhadija St., near Gazi Husrev Bey’s Bezistan. This is the spot where two dominant cultures that once shaped Sarajevo merge.
In essence, what can be seen clearly about Sarajevo is that this is a city that connects East and West – not only as different halves of the world, but also culturally – with the East considered Ottoman and Islamic and the West seen as Austro-Hungarian and Christian.
Their most obvious encounters are visible when one looks them straight “in the face” in the city’s architecture.
The location of the marker, “Sarajevo – Meeting-place of Cultures”, is unique in that it is right where these two cultural influences clearly meet and it seems to be the very spot in town where, with one step, you can cross from one culture to another.
As you stand on this spot, on your “eastern” side you have Gazi Husrev Bey’s Bezistan, Slatko Ćoše (Sweet Corner), Sarači Street… and, actually, this is where Baščaršija starts, with its Eastern look, aromas and so on.
If you turn toward the other side, toward “the west”, you’ll be met by Ferhadija St., which is lined on both sides by the many structures that were built in a more Western style, during the time of Austro-Hungarian rule.

Hamam - javno kupatilo u Sarajevu

Along with Islamic places of worship erected at that time, Baščaršija is also location of Old Orthodox Church, built sometimes during 16th century and first mentioned in Ottoman sources from 1539, and also first Sephardi temple called Old Synagogue which is built between 1581 and 1587. Just next to the Old Synagogue (Bosnian: Stari Hram = Old Temple) some time later was built New Synagogue (Bosnian: Novi Hram = New Temple). However today entire Jewish community uses latest erected synagogue, Ashkenazim synagogue just across the Miljacka river, while both Old and New synagogue buildings are used as Jewish cultural centers. Now, building of the New Synagogue was donated by Jewish community to the city of Sarajevo and serves as gallery named Novi Hram ever since, meanwhile Old Synagogue building is turned into home for the Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is considered to be the finest exhibition space in the whole of ex-Yugoslavia.

About the project
The aim of creating the Tašlihan virtual presentation is introducing the public with the original appearance of this valuable cultural heritage object, its history and purpose. Laboratory for Computer Graphics from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Sarajevo, Sarajevo Graphics Group, has implemented this project in three editions: as a documentary, interactive digital story and serious game. This setup of the project enabled us to enhance our scientific research looking for a virtual heritage presentation technique which would be most suitable for the majority of users. All 3 editions contain the virtual model of Tašlihan. In the documentary it is displayed through pre-rendered computer animation, in interactive story it is linked with a sub-story, while in serious game it can be accessed only if the user answers correctly to questions about the information presented in the stories.
The documentary is a sequence of old photos, recordings of present appearance of Tašlihan’s remains and other objects built by Gazi Husref bey, hand drawn illustrations and computer animation renderings. It is intended for users not so fond of interaction and virtual reality.
Interactive digital story is an implementation of our new digital storytelling concept, which we find more appropriate for the digital age and in which the story is presented through a hierarchy of main story and sub stories interconnected by hyperlinks. The viewer first sees the main story and discovers the summary information about Tašlihan and its history, while the particular aspects of the topic are presented in more details through sub stories linked to the main story. This way the viewers who would like to find out more about particular topics can watch the sub stories immediately or during the next visit to the site.
The serious game concept is similar to interactive story, except that the virtual model can be viewed only after correct answering to the questions related to the information presented in the stories. We wanted to prove that this will be an additional motivation to the users to be attentive to the stories and learn from them.
