Berlin's Gemäldegalerie (Picture Gallery), also known as the Old Masters Museums is one of the world's most impressive collections of European painting exhibiting an astonishing range of European art from the 13th to the 18th centuries from the great European masters including Botticelli, Dürer, Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian. For Rembrandt fans this is the world's largest collection with over 16 of his paintings. In the daunting new Kulturforum near Potsdamer Platz over 3,000 works of art are exhibited chronologically in over 53 Halls through separate epochs, art genres and schools in the daunting new Kulturforum near Potsdamer Platz designed in 1997, encompassing 7,000 sq m of exhibition space. Over 900 masterpieces can be seen in the Main Gallery collection.
For orientation, the tour can start to the right of the entrance rotunda on the main floor with galleries I to 4 of German painting from the 13th to 16th centuries. Dutch Masters in the adjacent rooms include 'The Netherlandish Proverbs' by Peter Bruegel. The Rembrandts can be seen in gallery 10 and further on are Titian's and Raphel's Madonnas.
Gainsborough and Reynolds as well as Goya and Velasquez are divided between the Great Hall (Hauptgalerie) and the Study Gallery (Sudeingalerie). Highlights include Caravaggio's Amor Victorius (1602) and Rubens' Perseus Liberating Andromeda (1622).

The greatest European painters are represented in Berlin's Gemäldegalerie. This gallery within the Kulturforum (Culture Forum) displays priceless paintings from the Middle Ages and the early modernist period: works by Rubens, Biblical motifs by Botticelli or astonishingly vibrant portraits by Albrecht Dürer.
The Gemäldegalerie opens in 1830. From the outset, visitors can see masterpieces here, including works by great artists such as Rembrandt and Botticelli. The collection loses many of its pieces to fire and misplacement during World War II, and with the division of Berlin, the Gemäldegalerie collection is also separated. Today, it's been reunited in the new museum building at the Kulturforum. The Museum showcases a permanent collection of 1,400 artworks. A tour takes you across more than two kilometres, featuring 18 rooms and 41 cabinets. The gallery has a simple and modern design, and every room has a different coloured wall, providing the perfect background for the paintings. All rooms lead to the central foyer, which features a water installation by Walter De Maria. This central space is perfect for a short meditative rest.
Take a look at the ceilings in each room: you will notice that all the paintings are lit only by daylight, so the artworks almost appear to radiate their own light. One of these works is 'Amor Vincit Omnia' by Caravaggio; the winged boy is typical of the style of this master. Or 'Madonna in the Church' by Jan van Eyck: the Madonna, clothed in a crown and fine dress, bears the baby Jesus in a Gothic church. The painting with two monkeys is also famous. They sit chained, looking down upon a 16th-century port. The painting's creator was Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and it is entitled 'Two Chained Monkeys'. Even today, art critics are undecided over its meaning. Take time to see the famous paintings by Sandro Botticelli. Many of the women in his paintings are reminiscent of one of his most famous works, the 'Birth of Venus'. The same applies to the image 'Madonna with Child', and 'The Virgin and Child Enthroned'. Thomas Gainsborough captures the vitality of children in his portrait of the four Marsham siblings in 'The Marsham Children'.
Try to decipher Bruegel's 'The Netherlandish Proverbs' - around 100 sayings are depicted in the painting. In the Gemäldegalerie, you also have the unique opportunity to see a work by Georges de La Tour. 'Peasant Couple Eating' is the only one of his works to hang in a German museum. One of the most famous paintings in the collection is 'The Man with the Golden Helmet'. Long considered one of Rembrandt's masterpieces, scholars now believe that it is in fact the work of another painter from his circle.

Die Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin zeigt seit 1998 die Schätze der älteren abendländischen Malerei in ihrem neuen Haus am Kulturforum. Im Stil preußischer Strenge erhebt sich das schlichte Gebäude, dessen Räume um eine lichte Wandelhalle gruppiert sind, über der auslaufenden Piazzetta. Nach der Wende und der Wiedervereinigung der Sammlungen der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin im Jahr 1991 wurde die Gemäldegalerie zusätzlich um eine Studiengalerie erweitert.
Die schlichte Fassadengestaltung des Gebäudes erinnern in ihrer Zurückhaltung an Schinkels Altes Museum. Klassisch proportioniert sind auch die Sammlungsräume. Von der großen Wandelhalle aus, einem Ort der Ruhe und Besinnung mit dem Wasserbecken und der Skulptur von Walter de Maria, kann man in die Ausstellungsräume zurückkehren und den Gang durch die Sammlung wiederaufnehmen. Einen internationalen Standard setzt die durchgehende Tageslichtausleuchtung. Das Haus gehört mit seinen berühmten Meisterwerken wieder zu den großen Galerien und bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die europäische Malerei vom 13. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert.

Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio di Gregorio (c. 1488/1490 – 27 August 1576), known in English as Titian, was an Italian painter, the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. He was born in Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno (in Veneto, Republic of Venice). During his lifetime he was often called da Cadore, taken from the place of his birth.
Recognized by his contemporaries as The Sun Amidst Small Stars (recalling the famous final line of Dante's Paradiso), Titian was one of the most versatile of Italian painters, equally adept with portraits, landscape backgrounds, and mythological and religious subjects. His painting methods, particularly in the application and use of colour, would exercise a profound influence not only on painters of the Italian Renaissance, but on future generations of Western art.
His career was successful from the start, and he became sought after by patrons, initially from Venice and its possessions, then joined by the north Italian princes, and finally the Habsburgs and papacy.
During the course of his long life, Titian's artistic manner changed drastically, but he retained a lifelong interest in colour. Although his mature works may not contain the vivid, luminous tints of his early pieces, their loose brushwork and subtlety of tone are without precedent in the history of Western painting.
