General James A. Van Fleet State Trail in The Green Swamp
This paved trail was once a railroad line, it goes along the edge of the Green Swamp in Withlacoochee State Forest. It is 29.2 miles long and was named after General James A. Van Fleet. Learn more about him here:
Old Pillars by The Van Fleet State Trail
I found these concrete pillars in the woods along The Van Fleet State Trail. They were most likely associated with the old railroad that is the paved state trail today. I have seen similar ruins by other abandoned railroads and it is possible that these were part of a foundation. I also found a Survey Benchmark by the area as well. I like to explore along this trail and others like it because you can sometimes find remnants of history and you can learn a lot as well.

Seminole Wars
The Seminole Wars, also known as the Florida Wars, were three conflicts in Florida between the Seminole—the collective name given to the amalgamation of various groups of native Americans and African Americans who settled in Florida in the early 18th century—and the United States Army. The First Seminole War was from 1816 to 1819, the Second Seminole War from 1835 to 1842 and the Third Seminole War from 1855 to 1858. They were the largest conflicts in the United States between the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. Taken together, the Seminole Wars were the longest and most expensive Indian Wars in United States history and one of the most expensive of all wars ever fought by the U.S. as a percentage of gross national product.
The First Seminole War arose out of tensions relating to General Andrew Jackson's excursions into northern Spanish Florida against the Seminoles beginning in 1816. The governments of Britain and Spain both expressed outrage over the invasion but ultimately, the Spanish Crown agreed to cede Florida to the United States in the Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819. According to the Treaty of Moultrie Creek of 1823, the Seminoles were required to leave northern Florida and were confined to a large reservation in the center of the Florida peninsula.

Cycling the Nature Coast Trail - April 23, 2006
Traversing Florida's Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy Counties, the Nature Coast Trail (formerly known as the Nature Coast Greenway) offers 64 miles of paved trailway, which is perfect for serious or recreational walking, jogging, horseback riding, cycling, or in-line skating. You can park your vehicle, gain trail access, as well as dine in Chiefland, Trenton, Old Town, Cross City & Fanning Springs. Contrary to statements of it being Hellish or boring by outdoorblahblah.com I found it a good HOT training day quite worthy of turning the cranks. I concluded my visit to the area with a trip to both Fanning Springs & Manatee Springs. I recommend the springs as a perfect place to cool off, relax and have a BBQ... That is exactly what I did.
